All Questions Answered
Here is an All Questions Answered Thread. I will answer every question posted in this thread by noon central time, at which point I will close off further questions. Please keep in mind that it will take time to answer that many questions, so be patient.
This is a rapid-fire format, so keep in mind the following ground rules:
1) One question per poster.
2) Please don't ask questions that are overly broad and/or vague. For example, asking me to name "Top 20 catching prospects" would be overly broad.
3) Try to avoid questions that are actually multiple questions couched in one
UPDATE: QUESTIONS ARE NOW CLOSED. I will start working on the answers this afternoon, so check back often.

Who are your top 5 "anti-sleepers"?
As in fringe prospects you think people are overrating for some reason or another.
antisleepers
I’m not sure I understand the question…you mean guys who everyone thinks is a sleeper but really isn’t? I can’t think of anyone like that off the top of my head. …if a guy is a “consensus sleeper” then he really isn’t a sleeper.
Mier
Widely derided as an overdraft in June, Mier’s coming along in prospect rankings on the strength of his pro debut. Am I overly dismissive to distrust that inherently small sample size? Does that close the gap between him and a Hak-Ju Lee, for instance?
Thank you. Good luck with your new diet.
mier
I thought he was an overdraft, but he played very well indeed in the Appalachian League. You have a point about the 51-game sample size, but the scouting reports are all very positive. I gave both Lee and Mier a Grade B in the book, so I think they are very close indeed. I wouldn’t set aside your skepticism entirely, but I don’t think I would have the same skepticism I would have if Mier had just come out of nowhere.
i don’t know if you play fantasy baseball, but if you did,
who would be your top 5 sleeper picks to break out?
sleeper
well I am playing Fantasy Baseball this year (more on that tomorrow), but I’m not sure what this question means. Do you mean sleeper prospect picks, or sleeper fantasy picks? I wrote a big piece about sleepers a few weeks ago and I’d refer you back to that if you mean prospects.
not prospects
not sure if this is too late for another answer,
but players who have adjusted or settled in with mediocre or low value
homer bailey, alberto callaspo, etc.

Justin Smoak's ultimate power potential
What is it like?
More Lyle Overbay or Justin Morneau?
Also, John, the diet’s exponentially easier if you’re not the only one following it. If you can get your friends and family to commit to eating what you eat, everything will be soooo much smoother.
http://oursaviorchuck.ytmnd.com/
smoak
Upside: 30-35 homers. More probable that he settles in as a 25 homer guy in my view, albeit with high OBP and good batting average. Better than Overbay. Not as good as Teixera.
What are your thoughts on Drew Stubbs?
Seems like he has added power potential to his immense speed…might we be looking at another Grady Sizemore type? Thanks
stubbs
I love his speed, athleticism, and defense. I am not sold on the power yet, and I doubt he’ll end up hitting as many homers as Sizemore has. I think Stubbs is more of a 15 homer type.
Looking back at your grading over the years
Have you analyzed or refined the characteristics and metrics you look at ?
i.e Other than injuries, which common characteristics do top 10 or 20 prospects have that never made their potential and what characteristics did players have that made it big, but received lower grades ?
grading
that’s two questions.
Answering the first one, my policy is to NOT use a fancy new metric until it has been out for at least a couple of years and the bugs have been worked out. Compared to ten years ago, I now look a lot more at ground ball/fly ball data (which wasn’t even available when I started doing this). I’ve been using BABIP more in the last couple of seasons, and this year I started looking at the various permutations of FIP more often, although looking at the “components” compared to a pitcher’s raw ERA is something I have always done..
cahill
He threw 178.2 innings last year. I’d hold him to about the same this year, maybe a little more if his command is better and the pitch counts come out the same…the point is I would keep his overall workload the same however you want to measure it. Next year I’d add a little more. I wouldn’t expect 200 innings out of him until he’s 25.
The Cardinals....
always seem to have the oldest “young players” in the league. Ryan (28), Freese, (27 next month), Boggs (26), Schumaker (30) and the list goes on. While none of these are impact talents, the Cards get peak years at pre-arbitration prices. Do you think this is a strategy or do they just have a number of late-developing prospects?
hmm
Hmm….good question. They have tended to go with some older prospects in the draft and with their trade acquisitions, so perhaps it is just a function of preferring older and more predictable prospects. I don’t think it is an arbitration/finance strategy as much as a player development philosophy.
Why do people think Matusz won't become an ace?
He’s a left, he may not hit 95 but he sits in the low 90’s. He’s got great secondary pitches. Just need a little clarification.
by Jordan Tuwiner on Apr 1, 2010 9:31 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
matusz
Who thinks he can’t be an ace? I can see him as a young Barry Zito or Andy Pettitte, and those guys were aces in their prime seasons when young. I don’t see why Matusz can’t follow in their footsteps.
What are the chances of Danny Duffy coming back to play baseball?
- .-. ..- … – / – …. . / .—. .-. - .. . … …
duffy
I’d never say never when a player’s psyche is concerned. Without knowing more about WHY he left baseball, I would say the chance is likely remote, but not zero.
Who will lead the minors in getting hit by pitches 2010?
You have to be right.
"I couldn't do that. Could you do that? Why can they do it? Who are those guys?"
Rex Brothers/ Garrett Richards
Regarding the two college pitchers in the ’09 draft with big arms but iffy production, how likely do you think Rex Brothers and Garrett Richards will be productive starters or closers at the major league level?
TheSouthWing.com - A Magazine of essays, prose and poems
pitchers
I like both of them actually. Brothers got more hype pre-draft because he’s a lefty and pitched better in college than Richards did, but both of them have terrific arms. we need to see both at higher levels, blah blah, but I think they both have a decent chance to live up to their potential.
As a Royals fan myself...
Is Luke Hochevar going to be a 1st ballot hall of famer?
Mourning Guy Carbonneau...
Royals obscure player to watch in ST: Lenny DiNardo
Eric Young Jr/Dee Gordon
EY and Dee Gordon seem to have a lot in common, speed, sons of MLB players. Why is Dee Gordon seen as such a better prospect. what am I missing?
gordon
Well, EY is athletic and fast, but Gordon is MORE athletic and even faster. That’s the main reason. Gordon also has better infield actions and better hands, while EY has been considered marginal with the glove (although I don’t think his 2B defense is as bad as his reputation).
What are the biggest warning signs you see for pitching prospects?
Is it bad mechanics? Lack of a breaking ball?
"[M]aybe he’s hoping we’re distracting each other while he elopes with pie. I’m on to you Kurt."- madpoopz
President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.
pitching
i assume you mean when I see a pitcher in person.
Lack of a breaking ball….well it depends on how old the guy is. If he’s in college or the Midwest League and doesn’t have a breaking ball, that can be fixable. If he’s in Triple-A and can’t throw a breaking ball, that’s a big problem.
Bad mechanics is usually more of a red flag for me, although how to define “bad” is hard to say. If you poke around the internet you can find a lot of discussion over what mechanics are good and what mechanics are bad. I am not a technical expert in the subject….I’m not a pitching coach…but I’ve been watching pitchers for 30 years and USUALLY have a good feel for whether a guy’s mechanics are stressful or not, even if I can’t explain it too well in technical terms.
Anthony Rizzo
He has impressed so far this spring. What do you see as a likely outcome for him? Do you like him more than Lars now?
rizzo
Yeah, Rizzo is moving ahead of Lars although I’d like to see another season of data from both of them…can Rizzo boost his power further, and can Lars recover at all? Rizzo could be an Overbay type…solid but not outstanding. Lars could be a total washout. We’ll know a lot more about both players by July.
Michael Taylor (not Michael Young!)
What do you expect from him this year? What does he need to work on, if anything? How much AAA time do you think he needs?
by Joltin Joe Orsulak on Apr 1, 2010 10:08 AM EDT reply actions
Taylor
I’d like to see Taylor get another 70 games at Triple-A (which would give him 100 total) but we’ll have to see if Oakland needs him sooner. I think it’s just a matter of consolidating the gains he’s already made…just seeing as many TripleA breaking balls and changeups as possible.
Who are three International Free Agents

As a Nick Markakis fantasy owner...
What do you think his overall ceiling is? I’m more concerned about power potential, but also how do you see him doing this year?
PPPPPPUNTO 4 MVP 2010
markakis
I can see him having a power spike at age 27/28, which would be more in 2011-2012 than 2010. I think this year he’ll hit about 20. He might have a 30 homer season in him but probably not this year.
Thanks John

Didn't make the rotation
Tillman and Holland both failed to make their team’s rotations this Spring, and now they’re in AAA. Has your optimism about either pitcher diminished? Which one has more potential at this point?
tillman and holland
No, I still like both of these guys. Both of them still have loads of potential and both still could develop into number two starters. Both were pushed too fast, especially Holland. Their potential is about even…but since Holland is a lefty he would probably rate slightly ahead.
I remain convinced that almost every pitcher would benefit from FULL seasons in both Double-A and Triple-A, and that pushing guys ahead of that schedule is usually the wrong move.
Rusty Ryal?
How do the Free State Liberators expect to contend in the always dangerous Bob Feller Division with Rusty Ryal as their starting MI?
The FOG…..
Domonic Brown
How much progress has Brown made over the last year? Or to rephrase… how far has he gone from “raw” to “polished?” I’m interested to hear exactly how much of an impact Phillies coaching has had on him and if he’s responded well. I figure the more polish… the less likely it is that he busts out I guess.
brown
Well if you had a 1-10 scale, 1 being total-lack-of-polish and 10 being absolute metaphysical polishitude (as prospects go), Brown has gone from about a 2 to a 5. He still has work to do refining his swing and his plate discipline, but he’s made a large amount of progress, and the phillies coaching needs at least some credit for that. They helped Michael Taylor (raw for a college guy) to develop as well.
Mike Leake
I know you’re pretty high on the kid. He’s pitched well in ST … albeit without much in terms of strikeouts. I’m not suggesting he’s the next Greg Maddux, but does Leake use that same approach? Sounds like he has pinpoint accuracy, a fastball in the 91-92 range, an outstanding changeup, a calculating yet aggressive demeanor, smooth mechanics.
Barring injury, what kind of pitcher do you forecast here?
"Most overrated prospect in the minors." -- Bravesin07 on Madison Bumgarner
leake
Well Maddux is a Hall of Famer and obviously you can’t predict Leake to turn out like THAT, but there are some similarities in style, yes. Another comparison would be Brad Radke or Scott Baker to use a couple of Twins comparisons. …guys with good stuff, great K/BB ratios, and the ability to chew innings.
Teheran and Vizcaino
What separates them in terms of stuff?
Were they still prospect-eligible, what grades would Chris Tillman, Chris Davis, Franklin Morales, and Cameron Maybin receive?
If that counts as a compound question, then just pick any one of them.
that far down on Davis?
wow…I would have thought his power potential alone would leave him in the B-range

Who is good at developing what?
Can you list some teams that you think are particularly good at not just scouting but also developing impact pitching or hitting talent?
I’d love to see a 2-4 team list each for teams that are good at developing impact hitters and teams that are good at developing impact pitching. Teams that are good at developing players defensively would be great as well but likely a lot more work.
teams
That would take quite a bit of work to do it justice, but in general I really like the way the Rays handle their pitching prospects.
More article fodder maybe
I seem to have a knack for asking too involved questions in these.. sorry John!
Yeah it'd be great to see him do a write up on that though

Chisenhall

chisenhall
Hmm….I’m not worried about the glove.

Cardinals: Shelby Miller. Maybe Stock or Garcia.

no idea
No idea. Way too early to say. I don’t judge these types based solely on scouting reports…I want to see some pro data. Witness all the hype about Viciedo last year that turned out to be misplaced.
Kyle Blanks
Can you speak a little bit about what you view his career average year will be. He appears to have enough power to offset the Petco effect. Do you agree?
You’re name has 2k9 in it — what are you some 8 year-old who makes Pillsbury Doughboy cookies and jerks off to that bullshit video game with Tim Lincecum on the cover--
Frederick0220
blanks
I love Blanks. In a normal park I think he can be a .300 hitter at his peak. In Petco that could be just .280.
Casey Crosby
Between the inevitable Dontrelle and Bondo implosions and the Tigers tendency to aggressively promote young pitchers, do you think that Crosby could end up in Motown come August for the stretch drive? Thanks, and good luck with the diet!
crosby
Well it is possible they could push him quickly if he pitches well, given their past history as you point out. Given his injury history they might be more cautious but you never know. I’d say the odds are against it but they are not zero.
Freddie Freeman
Who does Freddie Freeman compare to and when can we expect to see him in Atlanta? Is he more of a 15 – 20 home run per season guy, or is there more power in his bat?

freeman
he’s physicaly strong enough to hit 25-30 but I’m not sure his swing will ever work that way. I’d say 25 peak, around 18-20 most seasons.

Who's next to have a late surge?
Which 25-28 year older player do you think has a chance to have a Josh Hamilton/Nelson Cruz-type surge in productivity, late in twenties?
Makeup Problems
John, it seems like recent years have seen an increasing trend of top-prospects failing or retiring due to personal matters, both of the ‘change of heart and retire from baseball’ variety (i.e., Grant Desme, Danny Duffy) and the ‘bad makeup’ variety (i.e., Angel Villalona, Dan Cortes, Dan Gutierrez, Jeremy Jeffress, Jeff Allison).
What steps, if any, are being taken in the scouting and prospect evaluation community to take these more intangible and private factors in to account when evaluating a prospect or MLB draft candidate?
Waiting for April.
makeup
That is an excellent question and one i’ve spent a lot of time thinking about and some time asking people about. Teams are totally aware of the importance of this, of course. One of my long-term projects is to figure out how teams approach this, what sorts of similarities and differences there are in how they look at and “measure” makeup, if such a thing can even BE measured.
Starting Pitching
People often say that a pitcher could develop into an “ace” or “a number 2” or “middle of the rotation starter” or a “back of the rotation piece”. These labels seem vague to me. Can you give any insight into what you think of statistically or otherwise when you hear these labels used? Thanks for the thread John.
spots
They ARE kind of vague. It is sort of a bucket approach. Here is how I see them in my own mind. Also keep in mind that there is a grey area between each category.
Number One “Ace” Bucket: Clemens or Seaver types at the highest end. Current pitchers like Halladay. Lincecum. Greinke, Felix Hernandez, Sabathia.
Number Two Bucket: Guys who are very good/sometimes outstanding. You could have one of these as your ace starter and be fine if the rest of your team is strong. Matt Cain. Andy Pettitte for parts of his career. Javier Vazquez. The border between a strong number two and a “weak” number one is blurry.
Number Three Bucket: A guy who is above average but who isn’t QUITE as good as a number two, or who sometimes dominates but is erratic.. Kevin Millwood currently. Jeff Nieman last year.
Number Four and Five: Guys who are around average but who can eat innings for you
Whats wrong with Bumgarner?
What are the Giants looking for him to do in Triple A this year? Are mechanics contributing to the drop in velocity?
bum
I don’t know. If he gets lit up in Triple-A I think we have to wonder if the velocity decline is permanent. If so, his status will go down quick unless he makes substantial improvements with his secondary pitches.
My left Glut
A few weeks ago I took a nice fall while snowboarding, right on my left ass cheek. It resulted in a nasty bruise and a swollen ass cheek for the next week. The swelling has since gone down and the bruise has disappeared, but I still have a pinching pain in my ass.

Does he have future all-star potential, or is he more of a solid regular-type?
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
Rays
I’ve heard that the Rays have something of a pitching factory, where the team recruits amateurs fitting a particular mold who they know will succeed in their system. Could you tell me more about this, or at least the type of pitcher who fits this mold?
Thank you Mr. Sickels.
Rays
Good question for a longer piece.
Basically I’m not so much sure if it is a particular type as much as a particular development philosophy. With few exceptions (David Price), they move guys up one level at a time, and are especially cautious with high school arms.
How would you rank the relievers?

He means the Braves SS that was signed this year.

Oops, you’re right. I read that too fast. I was thinking of the Twins pitcher, not the Braves shortstop.

10-Team NL Keeper League - Farm Draft Question
I have 1st pick in our farm draft, and need some help deciding on a selection. Looking for best value, not team need. All of the usual suspects are taken, but these are available:
- Pedro Alvarez Aroldis Chapman
-
- Starlin Castro Dee Gordon
-
- Brett Lawrie Shelby Miller
-
— Tyler Matzek
Any thoughts on who would be the best pick?
Brandon Douglas
Considering his age, how much longer is his window open, and will the Tigers start getting aggressive with him on promotions?
douglas
I like him but I think he’s a future utility guy if he makes it. If he stays healthy and gets off to a good start this year, you could see him in 2011 depending on needs of the team.
Jeurys Familia
I know you have him on your list of sleepers for this year. What pitcher(s) would you compare him to, either/both stylistically and possible-career-path-wise?
familia
Somewhat similar to Jhoulys Chacin of Colorado, though of course we don’t know what Chacin will really be like yet. Maybe Fausto Carmona. Upside….John Lackey?
Michael Main
Seems to be a favorite to jump up lists/rankings this year. What kind of season do you expect him to have or what is he capable of? How does his stuff compare to other top RHP prospects?
by daveh33 on Apr 1, 2010 12:16 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Main
Reports are good on him…it will be interesting to see how aggressive the Rangers are. His stuff when healthy would put him in the Top 50 pitching prospects. . .probably not Top 20 though. I gave him a Grade B in the book this year, on the assumption that last year was ruined by the virus and that he’d recover fully. We’ll see if that pans out.
Compare and Contrast the futures of Matt LaPorta and Travis Snider
Different positions (for now) but both are no longer prospects and haven’t exactly caught fire.
by sloffy on Apr 1, 2010 12:19 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
snider
Snider has a brigter future I’d say because he is younger. I think LaPorta can be a solid slugger, but Snider can still develop into an All-star.

I’m a little skeptical and want to see what happens in Double-A. If he pitches well there then I can see him as a number four type. maybe a number three. But until we get advanced numbers I am reserving judgment.
Colby Rasmus
Has become vastly under rated IMO. 367/.516/.694 this spring.
What kind of year is he in for?
rasmus
Agreed that he is something of a forgotten guy.
I’d say .270/.320/.430 this year, then a big breakout in 2011.
Edward Salcedo

What’s your opinion on Michael Kirkman. He seems to be looked at as pretty highly rated based on how he’s pitched over the past year or so, but also has many years before to say that he isn’t that good.

Highest Upside
John,
What player(s) outside of your top 100 or so prospects have the biggest chance of becoming a star?
upside
oh, no doubt someone with terrific tools who hasn’t done anything with them yet and is still a Grade C or C+ prospect. This is a broader topic worthy of an article. Watch for the piece about shortstops upcoming.
Rangers
After addressing weaknesses in the middle infield and at catcher through international free agency last year (plus the progression of many of the pitching prospects and 1B/DH power hitters), what areas would you like to see them focus on for this coming year’s draft (where they have 4 of the top 50 picks) and international free agency? Are they at a point where they should be focusing on certain type of player (high-ceiling?) or subtly change their philosophy due to their past success?
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.
rangers
I wouldn’t change anything….I’d continue to focus on a mixture of high school and college talent, and continue to focus on live arms who are also good athletes.
Chris withrow
How would you handle him this year? Do you see him as a potential September call-up?
by SeanMillerSavior on Apr 1, 2010 12:48 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Withrow
I would have him begin the season in Double-A and I would LEAVE HIM THERE ALL YEAR. If he pitches well, promote him to Triple-A in August for a few starts. I would not give him any major league time unless there was an emergency or unless he suddenly turned into Dwight Gooden.
Who will have a better career?
I am in a dynasty keeper league, I have one spot left in my minor league system. I need to decide between Carlos Carrasco, Eric Young Jr and Jaff Decker.
areer
Decker has the best long-term upside value, but it will take longer for him to get to the majors. Carrasco and Young could contribute this year or in 2011. Decker won’t be up before ’12 at the earliest.
simon castro
Was Simon Castro’s breakout for real? How much do we have to discount the fact that he excelled as a slightly older guy in a pitcher’s league?
morrison, Fla or frazier, Cin...
better short/long term???
avg year numbers for both:
hr, rbi, sb, avg
Bob (5150bosox)
answer
Short term Frazier
Long term Morrison
CAVEAT: Frazier will be easier to fit on a fantasy team due to better positional versatility.
They aren’t going to provide many steals, though frazier will pick up a few here and there. Morrison better for RBI and HR. ABout even in batting average.
Garret Richards
Why did you give a B to Garret Richards? Shouldn’t college pitchers be expected to dominate rookie ball? Thanks John!
richards
Cause he throws 95 MPH and made progress with his secondary pitches. It is an aggressive grade but I went with my gut.
Jesus Guzman
Any chance he will get a shot this year/ what do you think his numbers would look like if he got to play full time?
Matt Tuiasosopo (SEA)
Looks like a real breakout candidate with the bat… to the possible tune of 30 HR in a couple years, and perhaps able to stick it as a bat-first SS/2B. Agree/disagree, and any comments on how you see his present/future?
disagree
Disagree. I don’t think he has that kind of power.
I’d say a .250-.270 hitter with some doubles, 10-15 homers in 500 at-bats.
Ynoa
thoughts on Michael Ynoa and when we might see him in the majors? Also what is his upside? grade?
ynoa
Upside: Pedro Martinez
Downside: blows his arm out and never gets out of A-ball.
The chance of the latter is greater than the chance of the former.
NO MORE QUESTIONS
OK, guys….I have a lot of questions to plow through this afternoon. NO MORE AFTER THIS PLEASE.
