Good afternoon prospect watchers. Let's get right to it.
***Prospect of the Day tomorrow will be Tyler Lyons of the St. Louis Cardinals. Thursday will probably be Jarred Cosart of the Astros. With the Paul Goldschmidt Prospect Retrospective done today, I will be shifting back to 2013 MLB Draft work.
***Yesterday's Minor League Ball Gameday thread
***St. Louis Cardinals prospect Kolten Wong went 2-for-5 for Triple-A Memphis last night. He's been on a hot streak lately and is now hitting .317/.345/.472. Also note his 1.089 OPS against left-handed pitching.
***Colorado Rockies outfield prospect Kyle Parker went 2-for-4 with two runs a walk and a double for Double-A Tulsa. He's been decent but not excellent this spring with a .263/.317/.455 line through 42 games, showing power but not lighting it up yet in the BA/OBP departments. I expect he will heat up soon.
***Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Keon Broxton hit two homers for Double-A Mobile yesterday, though his season line is an ,176/.208/.373 through 15 games. He has two walks and 15 strikeouts in 51 at-bats, which fits his past reputation perfectly: he's a free swinger with substantial power but problems with pitch recognition and strike zone judgment.
***A similar talent is Seattle Mariners outfield prospect Jabari Blash, currently on a hot streak at High-A High Desert, 6-for-10 in his last three games. He's hitting .310/.366/.680 on the season with nine walks and 31 strikeouts in 100 at-bats. Like Broxton, Blash is a right-handed hitter with plenty of raw power but problems laying off breaking stuff. He's getting away with this in the Cal League, but higher levels will be more difficult.
***Good start last night from Phillies Double-A Reading prospect Seth Rosin: eight inning, three hits, two runs, eight strikeouts. On the season he has a 3.68 ERA with a 37/11 K/BB in 51 innings. Acquired from the Giants in the Hunter Pence deal last year, he's got a shot as a back-end starter or (more probably) a relief pitcher.
***There was some talk in the thread yesterday about why I've been starting the Gameday Discussion this year. Just to clarify, the whole point of the Gameday Discussion is community interaction and community involvement. Melotticus in particular has been doing sterling work with boxscore updates this year, and lots of other people have provided timely information and analysis.
The Gameday thread doesn't happen and it doesn't work without you guys. I took over the actual POSTING of the thread this year since making it an actual front-page POST, rather than a fanpost on the sidebar, dramatically increases the number of people who see the Gameday thread. But the emphasis is still on community involvement and discussion and that won't change.
***Today's minor league game slate.
***Allan Simpson at Perfect Game posted his Top 100 Prospects for the 2013 MLB Draft list today, with 400 more prospects upcoming the rest of the week. I think this is behind their subscriber wall.
***Our own Matt Garrioch now has his 2013 MLB Draft Book available.
