Storm Chasing: Flat Tires, Reunions and Scrabble Apps

The Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers had an interesting time trying to get home after the game was postponed in Oklahoma City last week. They had to take cover at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark because of the tornadoes in the area. Ryan Verdugo tweeted this photo:

The team took two buses back to Omaha – at least that was the plan. Around 7:00 am Saturday morning, one of the buses had a flat, so everybody piled onto one bus.

The Royals want Johnny Giavotella to be more versatile, so he's been playing third base, and most recently, left field. I talked to him this week to get his take. Here's what he had to say.

Nate Adcock was designated for assignment this week. He really struggled in the first inning of his starts. His ERA going into his last start was 13.50 in the first inning. He has given up five-first inning home runs this season compared to just five all of last season (99.1 innings). He also had already thrown 10 wild pitches compared to nine all of last season.

Kansas City signed Chase Lambin and assigned him to Omaha. He was playing for the Sugar Land Skeeters in an independent league where Gary Gaetti was his manager. Does anybody else have the sudden urge to sing "Skeeters and the Bedbugs"?

The Chasers arranged a beautiful surprise reunion at Werner Park on Saturday between a returning Afghanistan vet (6th tour) and his two kids. You couldn’t find too many dry eyes in the stadium, especially after his kids embraced him on the Storm Chasers dugout.

Here’s a random little factoid. Remember Chad Durbin? He pitched for Omaha in 2000, 2001 and 2002 as well as pitching for seven MLB teams over his 14-year career. When he played for the Omaha Royals, radio broadcaster Mark Nasser says Durbin had to see a movie on the day of his starts. It must have relaxed him. Oh, and the Phillies just recently gave Durbin his unconditional release.

Speaking of Nasser, he uses a Scrabble app on his phone to compete against former Omaha pitching coach Doug Henry, who is now the bullpen coach in KC. He says Henry is a very talented player.

Memphis held Omaha scoreless for 21 straight innings during one stretch in their five-game series.

Danny Duffy and Jarrod Dyson are both in Omaha on rehab assignments. Duffy is recovering from Tommy John surgery. Dyson is expected to be recalled after 20-35 at-bats.

Yordano Ventura, the Royals No. 3 prospect, made his Triple-A debut for the Omaha last night. I’ll have an article up soon detailing his performance.
