I haven’t exactly done much research for these rounds, who are some of the best players in these rounds?

I’ve been very happy with the Mets draft so far, although this could be a function of how poor the previous two drafts were under Minaya and co.
by TexanNiner on Jun 8, 2025 10:23 AM EDT reply actions
Agreed
This was an excellent draft for the mets, a lot more high-upside high school talent than Minaya regime ever picked (16 in the first 30 rounds this year, 2 last year under Minaya). I really hope they can sign most of these kids, especially Phillip Evans who was taken in the 15th round and is a really promising infielder (Keith Law had him ranked #55)

Mets
I do like that there has been some more upside with this draft, but I think that a couple of the Pitcher’s they drafted in the early rounds I would have preferred trying to land a C or someone with a bit more upside. Pill, Verrett, and the Florida guy all look like #4/#5 starters at best and more likely bullpen arms, the guy from UMass-Lowell is a reliever. He is raw as a C, but I would have liked to have seen Nick Delmonico instead of Verrett, Pill, or Leathersich. That being said, it looks like some of the HS guys selected later on may actually sign. Montgomery has indicated that he wants to sign (lot of upside if the Mets can get his head on straight) and Diehl (C out of a HS in Rhode Island) may sign as well

I have basically the same view
I’m particularly concerned about the lack of catchers with upside.

Hard to say
“The Mets drafted high school shortstop Phillip Evans in the 15th round as an athlete. He could even play catcher some day, but will stay at his natural position for now. "
But I doubt Rubin would have said something like that unless he heard some whispers about it.

Pure swing. Hits the ball as hard as you’d like to see to right-center field. Shortstop, maybe a catcher. An athlete who we like.

How about Diehl?
I know he’s a big guy so he might not stick, but the tools sound pretty solid.

If he doesn't stick at C, then Diehl is not helping with the C depth issue
The Mets have no outstanding catchers at the MLB level. No catching prospects in AAA. Two catching prospects in AA, one (Kai Gronauer) is on the DL, and the other (Jean Luc Blaquiere) will be lucky to get to AAA. None of the catching prospects in the low minors look very promising. This is a major issue, and the draft is where it is solved fastest.

I mean, yeah
But is it that unlikely he sticks? Superficially he sounds like he’s got a Matt Wieters type body, which is unusual but not unheard of.
I definitely agree that they’re shallow on C prospects, it seems they’re putting a lot of faith in Thole, while he’s taken steps back in just about every aspect of his game this year. Is Frankie Pena outgrowing his defensive tools yet? He’s still not hitting, and I’m not a fan or anything, but at 21 there may be a touch of upside left there. Maybe one of the “athletic” two way pitchers they drafted ultimately converts or something.

Save money
After seeing the way day two fully played out I am assuming they went with the safer college pitchers early on so they can take some chances on the high school guys later and actually have a chance to pay them. And I don’t think it is a bad strategy at all. Take some pitchers you are confident will contribute in some fashion whether it be in the back of the rotation or out of the pen and then go for some upside high school players that way even if they don’t pan out you have something to show for the draft class.

No matter what you think of her musical abilities, Courtney Love in 1993-1994 was hot.

Tru dat, there wasn’t a bigger band at the time IMO. Frankly, I like Hole… Plus I was in the pit during the Lollapolza festival and it was scorchingly hot that day to the point that the crowd was chanting for water rather then bands/artists/songs… most of the other performers didn’t pay any mind to that but Love had the venue shower us with cool water and gave out bottled water in-between songs.

by John Sickels on Jun 8, 2025 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions
Did Courtney Love even exist prior to April 1994?
Just kidding, but her profile certainly heightened post-Kurt Cobain’s suicide.
Hole’s second album was ok but the songwriting was pretty much ‘Nirvana by numbers’. This kind of feeds into that sentiment that perhaps Cobain penned (or was at least heavily involved) with much of that material. He attempted to dispel that prior to his death but the fact that similar speculation accompanied Love/Billy Corgan in regards to songwriting in the late 1990s probably doesn’t help close the book on said musings.
The opportunist spin is probably unfair but it is tough to shake with her. As far as physicality goes, I’d go with Liz Phair or Justine Frischman in terms of mid-1990s ‘alt goddesses’.
by Matt0330 on Jun 8, 2025 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions
well....
Well…many of the songs on “Live Through This” existed in recognizable form as early as 1990, penned by Love and Eric Erlandson. Their first album, definitey pre-Kurt, also got good reviews. I’m sure Kurt had some influence (what spouses don’t influence the other) but the “Kurt wrote it” stuff is a bunch of BS in my view

Agreed
Courtney Love has never been hot, nor clean for long in her adult life.
But to each their own.
As for the draft, I found it odd that in a pitching rich draft, the Tigers practically ignored it in their first dozen picks.
Not only that, but instead of grabbing some higher upside high schoolers, they went with almost exclusively college players.
This makes me wonder if their draft budget was smaller than usual, if drafting all these college guys is a way for them to “fast track” some hitting depth, or if its a different approach under a new scouting director.
In a really deep draft, despite not picking until 76, I really think they dropped the ball here on quite a bit of talent that was there for the taking with their early picks.

The Nats started great, then gave up
Rendon, Meyer, Goodwin & Purke certainly all seem capable of making the majors.
But after round 5, when you can pick up some hidden gems, maybe go overslot to get talented HSers to sign, the Nats picked 6 college seniors in a row. Probably only to save money. Last year Ausitn Garrett (Senior, 9th) got $90k less than Matt Grace (Jr. 8th) and $80k less than Blake Kelso (Jr. 10th). So they save $400k and sign a bunch of fillers. It could’ve been a great draft.

I think ultimately, you can’t criticize any one pick or group of picks in a vacuum. Every team has favorite players, budgets, inside info on injuries/signability, etc. that we only get a glimpse of from the media sources we have. We’ll know on August 15th how good each team’s draft class was, and not before then.

While it would have been hard to screw up having 2 picks in the top 7 of such a talented class, D-backs fans have gotta be happy with the haul.
Sure there are questions such as whether Bauer’s routine will work in pro ball, will Bradley sign, Chafin’s TJ recovery, but the fact that the front office was willing to take some risks (not just money-wise) signalled a change in drafting strategy.
And one can always dream of a rotation of Kennedy, Hudson, Parker, Skaggs and Bauer in the near future :)

Astros
Very happy with their draft simply because they took Springer at 11. He was fifth overall on my draft board, and per my board was actually the BPA when the Astros picked, so that was a great change of pace. I see him as a 20/20 guy in center field, maybe even 30/30 in the absolute best case scenario. Kind of guy who could turn into a franchise player, and exactly what the club needed. His hit tool is slightly underrated too IMO.
Rounds 2 and later were merely acceptable. Lots of arms, some of them projectable, some of them more polished high-floor types. Not a huge fan of the Houser pick (it wasn’t terrible, but not good either), but I really liked the Armstrong and Tropeano picks as guys who could turn into really good starting pitchers if everything works out well for them.

Tigers
Bit of an odd draft given that they didn’t have a pick until #76. But, to select nearly all collegiate position players felt awfully unbalanced and leaves them with not a lot of upside plays. That being said, the guys they picked do seem to be mostly solid, safe options…Westlake in the 3rd=great value, Loy in the 5th will likely make it as a glove-only SS if nothing else, and Curt Casali in the 10th…not bad. I’d like to learn more about Jason King if anyone knows details.
Seems like there were a lot of upside plays around (particularly high school pitchers) that were available to a team willing to pony up cash, which the Tigers typically are. Perhaps their budget was impacted by the debt service news that came out a few days ago. Overall, an underwhelming draft so far, but at least Victor Martinez looks good?

If it says “athlete” in your profile, we drafted you…
In a system that is as deep as the Rangers it was nice to see them look to stock up on projectable arms, athletic HS players and the occasional raw college kid with high ceilings…
Fischer will get all the headlines if he signs, but don’t be surprised to see several of the Rangers HS SP end up being the true gem of this draft.

Thanks. I’m guessing that the Nationals don’t feel that invested in signing Tobias, given that they spent their 30th round pick on Bryan Harper - I’m guessing as a favor to Bryce Harper since he’s a mediocre lefty relief pitcher at the college level.

Players Drafted List

Don't know about spreadsheets but...
…MLB.com has a great draft tracker that you can print a list of players from your favorite team and you can also put together different lists based on position, team, college, high-school, etc. You can filter many combinations. I don’t know if that helps but I think its worth checking out. I printed out the list of Pirates selections last night.

Pirates
If they’re able to sign both Cole & Bell, then I believe the Pirates have done a great job. They continue the trend to load up on arms. Love the Dickerson pick. Pirates system rank was #19 by BA and I fully expect that number to go up into the top 10 soon. There is hope for 2013 and beyond (again, if both Cole and Bell sign)

I’m disappointed with the college-heavy, low-upside approach near the top. I know the Braves did well with Minor, but can we really expect similar from Gilmartin?

A Pathetic Draft for the Braves
In the deepest draft in many years, the Braves came away with very little. In fact, it may wind up being the worst Braves’ draft in recent memory. Braves’ fans are frustrated with the Gilmartin and Ahmed, but actually it was the later rounds (normally a strength) which look incredibly thin. It was very frustrating to watch them refuse to draft high ceiling players in favor of the obscure choices they made. Obviously, this has to do with money and Braves fans will recognize that until the team is willing to invest more money in the farm system, there will be more drafts like this one….

I drafted college seniors at 6 and 7 so I would have enough money to sign Deshorn Lake. He went to the Red Sox in round 12 in real life and may or may not be signed away from East Carolina.
My intention is to say that I signed him no matter what happens to him in real life.

I gotta believe he signs with Boston
If they offer him anything decent. His family, and extended family, is still struggling down in the Virgin Islands and he wants to be a bread-winner for them. Please remember that nobody gets a full-ride to college on a baseball scholarship. Colleges are only allowed 11.8 scholarships per year, so they are split up to get a full roster of players.

It’s better than I expected, but still not nearly as good as it could have been.
THe Panik pick didn’t bother me in terms of him not being a desirable player for the Giants, I just thought it was a missed opportunity in terms of who else was still on the board at the time. Not to mention that I thought they could still get Panik at #49 - or somebody very equivalent (and Brad Miller was still there at #49).
What saved this draft for me, is the 4 young, athletic guys they got in rounds 8 through 11, as well as grabbing Buechele and Diaz in the mid-teens. If they had continued taking safe, low-upside college guys I was getting ready to throw myself down the stairs.

I don’t really consider good drafting in the mid to late rounds a consolation for poor drafting early on. If they had allocated a larger budget, we could have had Mikie Mahtook and Josh Bell (or Daniel Norris) instead of Joe Panik and Kyle Crick. Big difference in talent there.

That last guy...
…has got to have one of the greatest names of all time.
Quintavious Drains

YES!!!
I can’t believe no one drafted Quintavious Drains in real life. How could you skip over a name like that in the scouting report?
Jose Flores: .831 OPS in High-A last year. .529 OPS this year. Ouch.
Co-dad of Ryan Scoma with waelwulf, because we're progressive like that.

well..
Jackson State slagged his arm. He was in the mid-80s by the end of the year.

Wouldn’t Drains be a better name in basketball?
And…Drains drains the jumper from long-range!!!!

4 current Mets prospects!
One name I thought may have gone but didn’t was Effrey Valdez/IF/New York Institute of Technology
Roster filler but I thought some stathead would go after a guy who has played many positions in college and as a Senior posted the following numbers in 183 AB:
AVG - .437
OBP - .525
SLG - .721
2B - 13
HR - 13
BB - 30
K - 24

San Diego
Oddity. Been listening to the live draft and in the 49th round, San Diego annouces their “final pick”, even though they had a pick in the 50th round. Well, they did skip their final pick. Only one of the entire draft. Maybe they thought it was the 50th round.
by rblythepittsteel on Jun 8, 2025 4:09 PM EDT reply actions
Nope
They clearly stated they would be skipping their last pick when they sign out prior to their final pick in rd. 49

Sign out?
Still not understanding what they did. Why didn’t they want to draft another player? It still doesn’t make sense. They could have made some young kid happy just to be drafted.

It's not unprecedented
It’s happened several times before. The Pads just had nobody left they thought they would like to, or be able to, sign - and no courtesy picks left.

Red Sox
I’m extremely happy with the first day, the 2nd day they made some picks I disliked (Jordan Weems,Miguel Pena) but overall its hard to complain

Yankees
Picks I like/I think are good value:
Greg Bird
Jake Cave
Justin James
William “Rookie” Davis
Daniel Camarena
Zach Wilson
Adam Smith
Alright picks, but too early:
Dante Bichette Jr.
Sam Stafford
Jordan Cote
Matt Duran
The Rest:
Too little upside or too many projected middle relievers for my taste.
Biggest complaint of the Yankees draft is the same as always - for a team with their money, they take very few signability guys, but play it safe with lots of college players, especially pitchers with too many questions about their ability to be starters.

hell yes!!!
If they can sign these kids.
by JP_Frost on Jun 8, 2025 10:10 PM EDT reply actions
Pleased with the Reds.
Stephenson at No. 1 is a high upside guy with a live arm. Amir Garrett is a fantastic choice. I love Wright in the fifth round. Cincinnati took a lot of athletic outfielders with sped and power potential. They went a bit heavy on college relievers, especially early, but overall I like it.

If the Cubs sign the first two picks...
plus Dunston Jr. and Maples I’ll be very happy. Tony Zych was also a coup/steal in the 4th. Then there’s really interesting names like Rock Shoulders, Ricky Jacquez, Trevor Gretzky, Tayler Scott, and a whole bunch of prep arms today a couple of them that are tall.
Plus we might be the team in the lead for the Cuban lefty. Sure, its the wrong Cuban lefty probably, but the way Cuban pitchers have turned out in the majors I hope they land him.

Their draft sucked. So…….yeah, I’m disappointed.
I’ve been more excited about bowel movements. In fact I will think of this draft often when I have them.

Brewers
Very disappointed in their low upside draft. I hate the fact that we passed over Sonny Gray twice in favor of two inferior pitchers. We also have very few high celing draft picks as this organization continues to go the safe route but this is no way to develop stars.
I also dont like that we havent drafted nearly enough potential power bats since clueless Seid took over as scouting director.

Gray
I do like Gray, but it is not like Jungmann and Bradley were reaches when they were selected. If a team is not confident in Gray’s ability to stay in the starting rotation going forward (a la Roy Oswalt or Pedro Martinez) I could definitely see why he would fall on draft boards in a deep pitching draft
by mtk52983 on Jun 9, 2025 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions
Gray
The Brewers didnt pick him because they have a fixation on bigger pitchers. They did draft Tyler Thornburg last year and he has been great but in general the Brewers have stated they like bigger pitchers. I think Gray has a chance to be another Ben Sheets and he has far better stuff than either Jungmann or Bradley.
by bklynbrewcrew on Jun 9, 2025 11:02 AM EDT reply actions
Yeah Gray's two pitch mix is Sheets nasty....
plus he’s probably a slightly better athlete.

Mooneyham
Here’s my nomination for sleeper …
http://www.mercedsunstar.com/2011/06/09/1924323/nationals-draft-mooneyham.html
The Stanford southpaw was taken by the Washington Nationals in the 38th round, making him the 1,147th overall pick. Mooneyham missed his entire junior season with the Cardinal after cutting the middle finger on his throwing hand before the start of the season.
… he’s a guy the Padres drafted and tried to buy out of Stanford a couple of years ago. Perhaps he’s as committed to his senior year as he was to his freshman year.
by LynchMob on Jun 9, 2025 8:09 PM EDT reply actions
Mooneyham will go back to Stanford for his senior year. Not only do they have a team that will almost certainly be competing for the national title, but he has to believe that he’ll be a top 15 draft pick in 2011 if he just stays healthy.
