Cards Day 2
Norris and Bell were on the top of my list for Day 1 options for the Cards so if 1 or both make it to them in Rd 2 I would love to see us make a splash. All indications are Wong will not be a hard sign nor will it take much overslot if any…I say that will a littel reservation since Boras is his advisor. But that should mean we have the ability to go upside even if it means overslot signing in Day 2. If Norris and/or Bell are gone or they just don’t want them for whatever reason I like Howard, Dickerson, J. Lopez, Meo, Conley, Fisher, T. Greene, Delmonico, Cave, Evans and a flier on Amir Garrett with their picks for Rd 2 and 3.

if they can sign him
that’s a hell of a pick. Best high school bat and best college arm in the same draft is a huge win for the pirates. The outfield of McCutchen, Tabata, Bell could be amazing
by lomo45 on Jun 7, 2025 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions
They pretty much have to, right?
PIT can’t afford to just cede a pick this high. They must have a good read on his receptiveness to sign I’d think. Not dissimilar to Stetson Allie in 2010 I suppose in some ways.
by Matt0330 on Jun 7, 2025 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions
The pick is protected
So they don’t HAVE to sign him necessarily.
by deezle on Jun 7, 2025 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Confident
Pirates have to feel they can sign him. All the money is being put into the minors anyway. Now they can go low $$$ and high upside the rest of the draft.

Not all big guys become Prince Fielder. I think he goes the road of Joey Meyer - great big hitter, excellent power, never enough of an athlete to perform at MLB level. Really would’ve gone with a more athletic player.

my feeling is that, i'm okay with it
My personal preference was someone like Derek Fisher (although being a UVA fan, there’s a part of me that hopes he slips). That said, the system needed power potential, and Vogelbach has some of the traits that Wilken looks for when drafting a bat relatively high - good bat speed and good, strong, quick wrists. The Cubs also have a good training staff that has done a great job in developing leaner, stronger guys in recent years. With Vogelbach and Baez, they’ve added some sorely needed power potential.

Except they’re actually drafting like they’ve got tons of money to spend. Tampa’s draft is real nice, but they clearly aren’t going “BPA at every pick”…Toronto is actually going huge, and I bet they sign these guys.
by metafour on Jun 7, 2025 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions
sounds a little rich
I’m sure they have eight figures to spend on the entire draft, a little skeptical that they have $20M. But I suppose this year, with all the talk (likely unfounded) of hard slotting next draft, that one team had to go with the “all out guns blazing” approach, and it might as well be the Jays. We’ll see what the damage looks like after the deadline, but considering that teams rarely use high picks on players they don’t have every intention of signing, Jays fans should be pleased.
by mrkupe on Jun 7, 2025 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Sure why not
Seriously though, who knows when considering that Tyler Beede & Kevin Comer won’t likely go ‘gently into the night’ at the deadline. I love the Jays’ approach though especially when contrasted to the way the Draft was run during the JP Ricciardi era.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 7, 2025 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions
Thanks for all the updates. I appreciate it. As a Rays fan, what do you think of their draft? It seems like the Rays have a nice mix of players, much to what Keith Law said. They didn’t go crazy like everybody speculated but they made intelligent picks.
by Dorn on Jun 7, 2025 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions
my thoughts are
here, although I think John summed it up pretty well — very nice picks at 24 and 31, then 3 pretty significant overdrafts in the supplemental (Hager, Ames, Snell), two wildcards where you just have to trust their scouting department (Martin, Harris), and then three pretty solid picks (Goeddel, Carter, Garvin).
So far I really like the Goetzman pick at 2.75. Not thrilled with drafting a reliever at 2.89 with a lot of talent still on the board.

tough to say
He’s obviously a very tough sign, and the further he drops, the less likely he’s going to be drafted in a position where the drafting team will have the money to sign him away. If he doesn’t go in the next 3 rounds or so, the odds of him signing are close to nil.

Nick Maronde, Florida
Anyone have anything on him?
http://babiesboozeandboobs.wordpress.com/
by Sethy on Jun 7, 2025 1:05 PM EDT reply actions
Keith Law had him at 52.
Coming from a three-quarters slot, Maronde will sit 92-95 in a relief stint (mostly 94-95 when I saw him) and pitches heavily off the fastball; the pitch has late life but no sink and he’ll probably be a fly ball guy long-term. His hard curveball at 79-81 mph has good shape although he doesn’t always finish it; when he does it’s an above-average pitch that should give left-handed hitters a ton of problems. He has a changeup but rarely if ever uses it in games.
Maronde’s arm action is long but very fluid, with visibility to the hitter the only real concern, and he’s looking more athletic than he did in high school. We know he can pitch in relief, but he has the size, velocity, and at least one off-speed weapon to move back to the rotation in pro ball.

This year’s top prospect in Canada is righthander Thomas Robson, who has a big frame at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds. Robson’s fastball sits in the 88-91 mph range, and he has touched 93, and it’s not difficult to envision him adding a couple of ticks because of his frame, his age (17) and how easy his arm works. Robson also shows a good feel for the strike zone, moves the ball around well and has a good understanding of how to pitch. He can spin a curveball and shows feel for a changeup. Robson is committed to Central Arizona JC but could go as high as the fifth round.

Don't disagree completely, but I think that the "beans for 1b" is a little bleak
Chris Marrero is having a respectable season at AAA, and Tyler Moore has proved at AA that his season a high A Potomac (where he was the Player of the Year in the Carolina League in 2010) was not a fluke. While neither of them are top drawer prospects, they were good enough to make Sickels’ list of team prospects last winter.
That said, I’ve been quite surprised with Mike Morse’s glovework around first base - since he came up as a SS, I guess I shouldn’t have been that surprised. He could be a nice placeholder until one of the prospects pushes him out.

After showing solid stuff on the showcase circuit for the last two summers, Chin was in discussion to be a top-15 rounds pick, but he had Tommy John surgery in late April. When healthy, Chin sat at 86-90 mph and touched 92 with his fastball, threw a fringe-average curveball and showed feel for a changeup. He had a deceptive delivery with a three-quarters release point and impressed talent evaluators with his ability to compete. Chin won’t be able to throw for about 10-12 months, and it would be surprising if a team took him and tried to nurse him through the recovery process. He could develop into a top-flight college arm in a few years.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 7, 2025 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions
From BA
At 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, third baseman J.D. Davis is a good hitter with a lot of strength and above-average power. His swing is more about strength than pure bat speed, which concerns some scouts. He also has a stocky body with a thick lower half and will have to watch his conditioning as he gets older. He is already seen as a baseclogger. Davis also pitches and has been up to 93 mph off the mound, with a curveball and a changeup. His arm strength and body type make scouts think he might be worth trying at catcher. Davis is committed to Cal State Fullerton.

Fisher fell because of bonus demands and his insistence of going to Virginia U. if they weren’t met. That’s why it’s easier for a team to take a risk here.
