Update and Suggestions
I'm behind schedule today, but I should have some Minor League Notes posted this evening.
Use this thread to make suggestions for coverage you would like to see. We are draft-focused for the short-term future, obviously, but all ideas are useful and help me stay responsive.

Early season breakouts/breakdowns
I think a nice feature would be an article or two on prospects whose stock has gone up (or down) significantly so far this season. C+ guys who may now be Bs, B guys who are now looking like Cs, etc. The Notes feature (which is great) touches on these kind of guys, but I think an article focusing on them would be quite interesting.

Would also like to see a mid-season review of Sleeper Picks as that time approaches.

I was thinking something like this as well...
stock up/down as well as guys who have rebounded from disappointing seasons last year.

Would love to see an update on Jose Altuve.
The kid is batting .404 through the first 208 AB’s in 2011.
Can someone with his body type be successful at higher levels?

I think the problem with the latter question
is that it’s such uncharted waters that nobody really knows.

Obviously draft coverage takes priority but here's a featurette idea:
Shawn Tolleson. His rise from low A to AA this year, once highly regarded, injury history, became obscure, now seems a promising reliever. What are his prospects for major league pen?

80s retro prospect smackdown
I have been always curious on how Barry Larkin (1st round 4th pick overall in 1985 out of college) compared to Shawon Dunston (1st round, 1st overall pick in 1982 out of high school). Both players are similar in age and started their careers within a year of each other.
Since the draft is coming up, it can always wait. Just throwing out ideas

Would also love to see a piece on Felipe Paulino
you had done a Not A Rookie on him back in February 2010, but that is outdated now.
Would love to hear some info on how he has been so unlucky throughout his career (consistently lower FIP and xFIP’s than his ERA). His pure stuff is so good!

Career Retrospective on Jeff Karstens

Likelihood of success
I’d love to hear how you judge the likelihood of success. I don’t have a great sense of the probabilities of a player becoming a star versus a regular versus a utility player versus a career minor leaguer. Obviously this varies on the grade and the position to start. There are of course a lot of factors, but how important are the different ones in your mind. So, for example, what’s the likelihood of a grade A hitting prospect becoming a star? 50%? 25%? How much of a difference does the level he’s at right now make? How much of a difference does his age make? How much of a difference does his missing skill make—I’d assume if the player’s missing plate discipline, he’s more likely to fail.

I would love to see...
a summary of some hidden 20111 mlb draft eligible players (injured, suspended, left school, etc.) that have fallen off the radar and could be big time sleepers. Maybe someone like Brett Mooneyham.

Something on Shane Peterson
Guy is raking to the tune of a near-.900 OPS in AAA as a 23-year-old. Originally was a “throw-in” in the Holliday trade but is doing really well. PCL mirage?

Here's a question about K's, BB's, and IP's, and how we use them in tracking pitching prospects:
would using K% and BB% make more sense than K/IP and BB/IP? I’ve been wondering a lot lately how much using the “IP” designation ends up being slightly inaccurate since pitchers who get more hitters out see fewer batters per inning pitched, thus have fewer chances to strike someone out. Keeping the K/BB stat in mind helps balance that, but then you lose how effective a pitcher is at striking people out by volume.
I’m sure this question must have been asked and answered at some point by the baseball stat community, but it isn’t quite as relevant for the MLB players since we have FIP, xFIP, and tRA available. Though for the MiLB guys, we often have to use the shorthand of K’s, BB’s, and IP - my question is should we be using PA’s instead of IP’s?

K and BB
I’ve seen this answered on FanGraphs. What they’ve said is that, yes, k% is more accurate, but only barely so. They’ve said the correlation is so high that, for all intents and purposes, they’re the same. That’s why they haven’t changed it for pitchers on the site, since it would be a lot of work apparently.

This would take some time, but a look at the value of later round overslot signings
Seen so many flame out/underproduce in the last few years. A lot of these kids are borderline 1st round picks getting paid first round money (even high first round money). Would be interesting to see a (relatively) comprehensive list, and just how many of these guys fail for every one who succeeds. Imagine that the math justifies the investment, even if only one out of every ten make it, but would be interesting to see just how many bonuses these teams have to go through to get a useful part.
by AgitationStation on May 31, 2025 5:00 PM EDT reply actions
I'd actually look into this myself...
If anyone knows a source for that kind of bonus data. I almost did this exact study a couple years ago but didn’t do to a lack of data, but a lot of stuff keeps becoming available, so if it’s out there…

College Baseball Regional Tournament Time!
Maybe throw out some names to pay attention to. I’m in Austin, so Taylor Jungman is an obvious one. With Texas State, Princeton and Kent State, there may not be anyone else. If Texas wins, it will host the winner of the Arizona State Regional, probably either Arizona State or Arkansas. Anyone there to pay particular attention to?

2011 Draft Prospects
Revisit possible draft rounds you proposed earlier. Nothing too in-depth, just name, previous projected draft round, and current projected draft round, with an explanation of why people have moved up or down in your mind.
