not sure where to find a good list of all the probable starters so fill them in as we go.

best matchup of the day might have already happened with Tim Melville vs Drew Pomeranz in the carolina league.

Melville: 6 ip, 5 h, 1 r, 1 bb, 7 k

Pomeranz: 5.2 ip, 1 h, 1 r, 2 bb, 8 k

also news from today Brett Eibner will miss 2-3 months which sucks big time.

Good stuff

I think it is safe to say that Drew Pomeranz is transitioning nicely to professional ball. Glad to see Tim Melville come through with a solid performance too – I’m hopeful that he’ll reestablish his status considerably in 2011.

I'm still brashly confident in Melville...

He might take a little bit longer to figure it out, but all the necessary parts are there.

Agreed

On both. I’m firmly in the Melville camp as well – 2010 is over &, as you reference, he’s got the ability. All offseason notes regarding Melville seem to be positive (usually a given but in his case hopefully these are more than just platitudes) & the stat line indicates he rebounded with a vengeance today. In terms of talent, he’s right there with the bulk of KC’s high end pitching stockpile.

I doubt Pomeranz is long for the Carolina League.

Here are a couple of other probable pitchers of interest:

- Tyler Skaggs in the CAL

- Shelby Miller for Palm Beach

- Zach Lee in his second professional start (MWL)

- Chad James (FSL)

- Keyvius Sampson for Ft Wayne on the road tonight

- Kyle Stroup for Greenville (nice first start last week – potential climber)

- Austin Kirk for Peoria (ditto)

- Blake Beavan for Tacoma in his second 2011 start.

Very nice

Does anyone have a recent(ish) report on his stuff? Most of the scouting reports I find on him via Google search are quite old.

Kevin Goldstein blurbed him last week:

RHP, Mets (High-A St. Lucie) – Every team has a guy like Familia: young and athletic, with excellent size and stuff, yet the results just aren’t there. Familia is repeating the Florida State League after putting up a 5.58 ERA there last year, but at this rate, his return engagement won’t last long. Sitting at 90-97 mph with his fastball and showing a much-improved power breaking ball, Familia faced the minimum 21 batters in his seven innings on Friday, allowing just one hit and striking out seven. Six-foot-three and long-armed, the 21-year-old Dominican has a history of control problems and still needs to improve his changeup to avoid a trip to the bullpen, but with 2010 first-round pick Matt Harvey and top prospect Jenrry Mejia both impressing in their season debuts, the Mets suddenly have a trio of power arms to make many organizations jealous.

In terms of sheer talent

It could potentially be the best bullpen in baseball. Joakim Soria is already one of the top handful of short relievers in the game & Aaron Crow & Jeremy Jeffress seem almost tailor made for eventual closing/high leverage duties in the back of a major league bullpen. Tim Collins continues to challenge everybody’s paradigms as well; most of us Toronto followers were already aware, but this native New Englander continues to shine & his future is bright.

by Matt0330 on Apr 13, 2025 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

why are we convinced crow won't start

i’ve heard no reports about him not maintaining velo late into games, and i think last year can partially be explained by being extremely rusty. so what’s the major knock on him as a starter? he doesn’t have the arsenal for it? or is it problems with his delivery which may lead to durability issues?

by son.of.sourman on Apr 13, 2025 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

I wouldn’t say there is a lot of scouting evidence but there is a bit of logical eveidence…

lots of unsucessful minor league starters become sucessful major league relievers. I think one aspect of this that doesn’t get a lot of mention is that it is just an EASIER job.

So, what I meen is that because Crow is having sucess as a reliever, people will think its because he’s better suited for relief. This all said, I agree with you and think he can start :)

I think Crow's stuff plays much better in the bullpen

anyways… He probably would do just fine the second time through a batting order but a potential third time not so much (that can be said about a lot of guys though)

Agreed

To a point. Yes, the Royals should absolutely see if Aaron Crow can start. It’s in their best interests to maximize their investment in him & there aren’t a lot of quality future pieces currently blocking him. In the end though, I think he’s primarily a FB-SL guy & simplifying things will only help him. Also, he’s 24 so I like how they’re aggressively handling him right now so I’m not sure what would go into ‘stretching him out’ in terms of 2011 with other talents on the farm on his heels. John S. had a nice little blurb about him on the main page & I agree that Crow has the makings of a very good short reliever which is where I’d guess he would end up even though he was a very good college starter.

As the season goes on, if they don’t start limiting his innings or skipping starts that will tell a lot about how concerned the Padres are about his health. He’d only thrown 51 professional innings in 2 seasons since being drafted, so I’d be pleasantly surprised if he topped 100 innings this year.

Jonathan Villar has been hitting the cover off the ball

Currently batting .393/.400/.679. 5 SB, no times caught stealing. Obviously plenty of caveats about the run environment and the sample size, but the most promising thing for me is the following:

28 AB, 1 BB, 4 K (13.7% strikeout rate).

Scouts think he has good hit tool but it was hard to blame the skeptics after he struck out 153 times last season. This is a good start to this season.

Also keep in mind he’s one of the youngest players in A-Advanced.

Eibner is actually on twitter and posted a pic of his hand.

He did say it was “getting better” yesterday I think, though… and I did hear a lesser time frame, but don’t recall where.
