Suggestion Thread

Make some suggestions for what you want to see this week. I intend to do an AQA soon. I'd like to focus on some historical prospect pieces as we wait for spring training to begin, but I'm open to all ideas.

or maybe a 3-way?

Freeman/Belt/Rizzo?

by PrincetonCubs on Jan 31, 2026 9:05 AM EST up reply actions

I feel most would agree that Rizzo isn't in Freeman and Belt's class

although he is at their stage of development I guess

by Navi's_Navy on Jan 31, 2026 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

KLaw would disagree

fwiw :)

(I would too, I think Rizzo’s getting underrated a good bit by the community here)

Retros on 2006 pitching prospects

I think it would be interesting if you did prospect retros on the first four pitchers on the 2006 pitchers prospect list, all super successful (Verlander, Liriano, Cain, Billingsley).

Upton Brothers Comparison

How about a Prospect Retro Family Smackdown combo piece? Justin vs. B.J. comparing which brother seemed to progress more quickly, which is closer to/more likely to live up to the hype laid on each, and which will have a longer MLB career. Or other comparisons, I’m having a bit of trouble trying to word specific topics when combining Retros and Smackdowns. Help anyone?

Pitch type

I’d love to see some type of long-range piece that looked at top pitching propsects and what their best secondary pitch was. Basically - do slider pitchers succeed more than curveball pitchers?

The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.

It’d be awesome if anybody could do this, not just John.

How about a collegiate/prep prospect preview?

I would love to see some stuff on future minor leaguers and how they rate against some of the current prospects.

How about...

How about a list of say the top 20 Pitching Prospects that figure to be top of the rotation “Aces”. We see a lot of “lists” and top prospects, but many of them only figure to be #2’s or 3’s. How about just guys that project to be #1’s ranked throughout all levels of the minors.

by Internet Bullies on Jan 30, 2026 11:59 PM EST reply actions

Yu Darvish

This may be too far out of your comfort zone, but I’d be interested in seeing you do a write up on him, and to find out where he would rank on the top 50 list.

by swilliam on Jan 31, 2026 12:01 AM EST reply actions

If that is the case...

why not do a write-up on Yulieski Gourriel as he’s probably the best talent in the world not in the majors.

by Havok1517 on Jan 31, 2026 12:16 AM EST up reply actions

Drew Stubbs

He’s starting to get a lot of love for his quiet 20/30 season. Can you do a write up of what you project from him and what his ceiling is?

by Internet Bullies on Jan 31, 2026 12:04 AM EST reply actions

I really enjoy

the versus smackdowns. Lawrie vs. Kipnis, Dominguez vs. Chisenhall, Sands vs. Singleton, Machado vs. Gordon, etc.

A thought on an article

Something where you discuss guys you think could breakthrough with big spring trainings and make big league clubs. Not sure exactly how to word what I’m thinking but something along the lines of Major league ready guys who have a legit shot to open the season in the majors (not including guys like Hellickson, Chapman etc… that everyone knows will start in the majors) more along the lines of guys like Jake Mcgee

by Dbullsfan on Jan 31, 2026 3:32 AM EST reply actions

2 general ideas.....

I love the idea of positional rankings; even if we could cobble them together from your existing grades, it’s still interesting to hear them from you.

I also love the new career profiles (And older retros): the biggest void in baseball writing that I see now is that gap between exceeding 130 AB+ and 50 IP+ and being established as a known, somewhat consistent quantity in the majors. I’d love to see rankings of the guys below 26 (off the top of my head) who still have upside……….Guys like Travis Snider and Matsuz come to mind immediately: we obsess over them ’til they get to the bigs, then, poof……

by Johnny Tuttle on Jan 31, 2026 5:37 AM EST reply actions

I do apologize

if you meant, “Travis Snider, Career Profile”. I read the suggestions as more general.

by Johnny Tuttle on Jan 31, 2026 5:38 AM EST up reply actions

Hmmmm

What about a piece that ties in the true historical angle you seem to be searching for John. Kinda looks like a retro piece on a guy from another era, like a Bob Feller type, and comparing/contrasting his style to a player say, from the last ten years or so that reminded you of similarities to Mr. Feller. Just an idea, not sure if I explained it very well.

A "What Went Wrong?" series...

starting with Mark Prior, who still brings teh tears to teh eyes.

by SenorGato on Jan 31, 2026 11:14 AM EST reply actions

I think we already know what went wrong in Priors case…

In depth interview

As everyone already knows, I think the catching position is far and away the most important on any team. So, with that being said, maybe you could do an in depth interview with some minor league catchers. Here are a few ideas. Lets start with a few from So. Cal. and see what they have done this off season to prepare for a successful 2011 season. Maybe Austin Romaine, Kyle Skipworth, Cameron Garfield (sorry about the name spelling). Would be great, thanks.

Pending more data

Perhaps a look at prospects on whom we have little more than a scouting report, guys who you like but on whom we have little or no pro data

Prospect Smackdown

Jacob Turner vs. Zach Wheeler

by smay24 on Jan 31, 2026 11:51 AM EST reply actions

Historical Greats

How about a look at how some of the greatest players in history would have profiled as prospects if they were at that stage of their career in today’s day and age? Which ones would have been considered “can’t miss” prospects? Which seemingly came out of nowhere or would have overcome negative scouting reports or poor sabremetrics that weren’t around during their time?

by mentalpowers on Jan 31, 2026 11:54 AM EST reply actions

Interesting

This is something that isn’t really done much, good idea. Although, I imagine it’s pretty hard to get reliable scouting info from the minor leagues the older you get.

2011 Impact Prospects

Heading into spring training, it would be cool to see something about what prospects you see making an impact in 2011 and what role you see them taking on their ML team.

If everybody likes you, then either no one knows anything about you, or you're dead.

Prospect Retro combined with Prospect Smackdown

Take past prospect and smackdown them with current prospect. For example, Jason Bay vs. Brandon Guyer.

Donovan Tate

Coupled with his inability to stay healthy, Donovan Tate’s poor numbers seem to make him look like a bust in the making. Has there ever been a player who was so tools heavy (like Tate) who stumbled so much out of the gate?

players inadvertantly not included in the book.

hate to be the one to point out mistakes but anthony carter (CWS) was listed in the index but doesn’t appear to be in the book.

Yeah, and Jason Knapp too. I know I wrote comments for both of them. I don’t know how they got deleted. Let me know if you find someone else.
