Sleeper Alert Update, Part One
Sleeper Alert Review
It's time to review my pre-season list of sleepers and see how these guys are doing as we approach the midway point of the season.
There were 54 players on the list. Here are the first 10. I will get to the rest of them as the weekend progresses.
Fernando Abad, LHP, Houston Astros: Made four starts in the Texas League, 3.00 ERA with 14/4 K/BB in 21 innings. Went on the disabled list in late April with a shoulder injury.
Kyle Allen, RHP, New York Mets: 4.55 ERA with 37/36 K/BB in 61 innings for St. Lucie in the Florida State League. Held back by control problems thus far.
Alexia Amarista, 2B, Los Angeles Angels: Hitting .315/.364/.471 with 15 steals for Rancho Cucamonga in the California League. Looks good right now.
Jeff Antigua, LHP, Chicago Cubs: 5.11 ERA with 52/24 K/BB in 62 innings for Peoria in the Midwest League, 64 hits allowed. Not too hot.
Jon Bachanov, RHP, Los Angeles Angels: 5.18 ERA with 23/14 K/BB in 24 innings for Cedar Rapids in the Midwest League, 29 hits. Good strikeout rate, control is sketchy.
Chris Balcom-Miller, RHP, Colorado Rockies: 4.04 ERA for Asheville in the Sally League, but with a nice 37/6 K/BB in 36 innings and a 2.29 GO/AO. Still looks interesting to me.
Jeff Beliveau, LHP, Chicago Cubs: 2.66 ERA with 43/17 K/BB in 32 innings combined between Peoria and Daytona, 22 hits allowed. Walks are high, good K/IP and H/IP ratios however.
Robert Bell, RHP, Toronto Blue Jays: 6.20 ERA with 31/10 K/BB in 41 innings, 53 hits allowed for Double-A New Hampshire. Spent second half of May and first half of June on disabled list.
Nick Bucci, RHP, Milwaukee Brewers: 3.07 ERA with 45/35 K/BB in 59 innings for Low-A Wisconsin, 51 hits allowed. ERA is nice but not supported by components, but walk rate is too high, strikeout rate too low.
Jose Casilla, RHP, San Francisco Giants: 1.35 ERA with 23/10 K/BB in 27 innings for Low-A Augusta, 15 hits allowed, 1.90 GO/AO. Hit rate is very low, strikeouts OK, not bad overall.

Dynasty
In a long term dynasty league, would you drop Brandon Erbe, Wilmer Font, Chad James or
Aaron Miller for any of the above?

Amarista
I also noticed that he has only 1 error in 310 chances this year . . . and I believe this was recent as I checked in on him not too long ago and he was still at 0 errors. Is this a product of a lack of range and that he knows what he can handle and so he keeps making the routine look routine? Or is he taking chances and making some spectacular plays and still coming up with no errors? A plus defending middle infielder with a .300/.375/.450 bat that can steal 30 bases won’t be on any sleeper list much longer!

Jose Casilla
He pitched the top of the 9th inning tonight in a game his team was leading by a score of 7-1.
He faced 3 batters: 2 Ks, and 1 GO.

Kyle Allen...
Held back by command problems. You could say that about every arm in the Met system this year. Holt, Familia, Allen, Carson, and even Beaulac and Niesen. They’ve all lost the strike zone….
I suppose a few of them could have been overrated or not very good, but all of them? It makes you wonder…
