German guy, looks like he has a strong arm and skill against baserunners, but otherwise rather raw. Lacks power. I’d say backup at best.

Ceiling….starting major league catcher, .270-.280ish hitter with decent power, very good OBP, above average defense. Power…i could see him hitting 15 homers per season. I don’t see him as a future star but I think he will be a very solid player.

Well without any pro numbers to analyze, this is all based on high school scouting reports and video, and frankly I don’ t have a great feeling for him either way. Scouts like his power and he reportedly has good plate discipline, but it is all theoretical until we see him play.

How would it go down?
Let’s say Frank Wren called Jed Hoyer to propose this exact trade, what would Hoyer’s response be? Would he have to show a little bit of a poker face at first so that he didn’t make the Braves realize it was a bad deal (at least right now, who knows, maybe those 3 bust).
Long story short….I’d love to see the transcript of the famous Teixeira trade.
by Dorn on Oct 6, 2025 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions
Braves
While the deal is obviously n/a for a guy with one year left on his contract, at what point do the Braves start trading some pitching for hitting. With Lowe (due to the terrible contract), Hanson, Hudson, and Jurrjens all under team control until atleast 2012 and arms like Minor, Beachy, Teheran, Delgado, Medlen, Vizcaino, Perez, and Hoover in the minors, isn’t it time to go get yourself some hitters? Hayward, McCann and Prado can’t do everything by themselves.
by hoos on Oct 6, 2025 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Been a ? for Braves' fans too
I can understand that Wren feels a little hamstrung by the Teixeira deal (that was done by outgoing GM Schulerholtz) and doesn’t want to gift wrap several top prospects for 1 guy, but he’s broke the bank for guys like Lowe and Kawakami while ignoring that we’re very average through the middle of the lineup. I think that Wren has spent every 1st round pick he’s had as our GM on a P (Glavine as FA, drafted Minor, and Wagner as FA) while we’ve been completely dependent on Chipper and McCann to supply any pop that comes out of the lineup.
If we decide to break the bank on a RH power hitter this off-season, expect to hear the cheer from Atlanta in Seattle…
by theatlfan on Oct 6, 2025 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Fielder...
You could probably get him for just one of those arms and a few long-shots…
by Scott the Shot on Oct 6, 2025 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions
A better fit would be a RH CF/LF
since Freeman had nearly a .900 OPS in AAA while playing most of the year of @ 20.
Still, Fielder wouldn’t be a bad get.
by theatlfan on Oct 6, 2025 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Fielder
I get the feeling that Fielder will only agree to a trade if he signs a long term deal along with it. The Braves aren’t going to spend that kind of money when they can go cheap with Freeman. Same reason why they won’t sign someone like Jayson Werth this offseason. It seems they are content with a Hayward, McClouth, Cabrera, Diaz outfield, no matter how bad the latter three guys are.

I made several suggestions of what would make sense.
Consider Teheran an untouchable. I think Freeman plus a few lower-level guys is more than enough. But if I’m the Braves, I don’t do it. You’ve got a nucleus that’s going to compete at the highest level for the next half-decade without Adrian Gonzalez.
by Humbled Fan on Oct 7, 2025 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions
No deal would include Freeman or Teheran
I’m not sure why your not understanding this but the Braves ARE NOT going to trade a 1B that under control for 6 years or a potential Ace who’s also under control for 6 years for ONE year of Gonzalez no matter how good Gonzalez is or even if Freeman and Teheran both are bust. Again the Braves WILL NOT mortgage the future for a 1B who’s only under contract for ONE more season.
You keep trying to compare Gonzalez to Cliff Lee and you just cannot base a deal for Gonzalez, a great 1B to Lee, an Ace. Also the Rangers dealt from a position of strength since they already had Moreland and Davis. Even if those two don’t work they could always sign a 1B. Smoak has done ZERO in the ML so far not saying that he’s not going to be good.

what about comparing the trade of agon to the trad of tex?
Fire Everyone
by billybeingbilly on Oct 7, 2025 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Can't do that either
The Braves we’re in a pennant chase when they acquired Tex at the trade deadline and plus he had another full season with the team. Taking nothing away from AGon he’s a superstar at 1B but this offseason there are several very good options at 1B so why trade several good prospects for a rental when a team could just sign a 1B who could put up just as good numbers.
by Jay212033 on Oct 8, 2025 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions
While this particular trade proposal is just silly
There’s NOBODY on the free agent market at 1B this year who you would expect to put up numbers that even remotely resemble Gonzalez’s production.
by realitypolice on Oct 8, 2025 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Dunn and Konerko could put up numbers close to Gonzalez. Also my whole point is I would still rather keep the prospects and sign a guy like Dunn, Konerko, Berkman, Huff, Cantu(if the Braves go the FA route but I doubt it).

I have to go with the Rays here….they are just stacked, and I should have had Longoria in that article too. The Reds are a close second…although the Giants with the Posey/Bumgarner duo are good too.
How does that translate? Hard to say….but it certainly gives a team more slack to work with. Too many things factor into it to say for sure…the rest of the division, injuries, luck, etc.

Jeurys Familia...
I guess this could be a broad question, but Familia had a spike in velocity and lost command of the zone until salvaging a very good August. Do you think these two things can be related, or was it just a kid struggling at a decent level? I think his peripherals make the ERA look harsh overall too. Thoughts?
by MetfanBren on Oct 6, 2025 10:48 AM EDT reply actions
familia
Well without knowing exactly what was going on in the clubhouse or with the coaches at this point, I can’t say “THIS was definitely the problem.” But certainly, a young pitcher who gains velocity can see a change in his command…if his body changes his mechanics can change too, impacting command, sometimes deliberately but also by accident. I still retain hope that Familia can be a very good pitcher and I am far away from giving up on him. His K/IP and H/IP were strong, and I can see him reboundingin a big way next year.

Production vs Upside
In your analysis, at what point does production outweigh upside potential? For example, a guy like Craig Kimbrel (in an extremely small sample size) showed that he can dominate hitters but he’s still just a bullpen arm. At what point do you favor success in a limited role (MLB reliever) vs the slim chance of success down the road in a full time role (starter at the MLB level)?
by Dorn on Oct 6, 2025 10:51 AM EDT reply actions
question
That is an excellent question. Part of it depends on what level the player is playing at. Generally, I am a bit more production-oriented than many analysts, although I certainly like high-upside players as well. But I tend to be suspicious of guys who are all-upside-and-no-performance, especially guys who haven’t played at all yet. I am reluctant to give a player a top rating based solely on scouting reports, although there have been exceptions.
by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2025 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Thanks. I agree with you. I think too many analysts are blinded by upside potential and, at the same time, I don’t want to discredit the importance of upside. I don’t think enough analysts weigh the possibility of a prospect maximizing their potential.

If you’d feel the need to base it on the rest of the team, you can assume the rest of the players are league average offensively and defensively.

Do you mean...
For an established major leaguer, or are you asking about prospects? Because the great bat can always move to 2B or 3B and probably the OF as well, but the bad offensive SS prospect is doomed if he can’t figure out how to hit.

Yeah, auclair is right…if you mean a prospect, I take the bat.
If you mean an established major league player…it dpeends. Are we talking a merely “great” glove, or Ozzie Smith Great? If we are talking multiple gold glove greatness, I would probably go with that.

I was thinking major league team. So if you could insert a player into your SS position at the major league level and had the option of a top fielder (say top 3 in the league, not possibly greatest ever) or a top hitter, which would it be?
Thanks for the response.

I don’t trust Valencia and his .375 BABIP, and I think Gordon can play enough 3B or OF to contribute. Especially with older players like Cuddyer and Thome more than likely not staying around for a while. Depending on what Dayton Moore would demand (which is probably a lot still), if we could get him with giving up some lower prospects, why the heck not.

Well I can see him developing into a consistenly solid number three starter if all goes well. But there is just something here that makes me wonder if Leake put so much into 2010 that he’s maybe going to pay for it next year, with an injury or sharply decreased performance? Just a thought.

I’m not sure to be honest. They really seem to have an outstanding pitching development program, and I have been praising the way they handle arms for several years now. by backtocali on Oct 6, 2025 11:54 AM EDT reply actions

the term from scouts i’ve heard about Lawrie is “red-ass”….aggressive, highly competitive, kind of a jerk but very intense and wanting to succeed. I’d be interested in what “bad body language” means…that could mean a lot of different stuff. Is he getting lazy or something? I’d have to check my sources about that.
by John Sickels on Oct 6, 2025 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions
I read the term
in Baseball Prospectus, and believe I have heard it elsewhere, but cant remember exactly.

by backtocali on Oct 7, 2025 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions
lawrie
Ah…well that would fit into the “red ass” thing I had heard…a bad play or a mistake by himself or others gets him angry because he is so intense….that’s bad if it results in clubhouse tension obviously, but can also be a good thing if he can channel that desire into something contstructive. Let’s see how he matures emotionally…he’s still just a kid.

Red Ass: Hot Head: Malcontent: Japanese Game Show Host?
This isn’t directed at John specifically, but is an open question: are there any black or latin players who get the red ass label?
There are subtle distinctions, but it seems that red-ass (white) sort of = hot-head (latin) which sort of = malcontent (black). I guess there haven’t been enough famously difficult Asian players for a code-word to develop; perhaps we can contribute to the lexicon.
Possible Asian terms: fat-toad (after Irabu), bird-killer (after that Cubs pitching prospect), what else?
So, to adapt John’s above sentence:
the term from scouts i’ve heard about Lawrie is "red-ass"
We already know we can modify it for black and latin players (“the term from scouts i’ve heard about Desmond Jennings is ‘malcontent’” or “the term from scouts i’ve heard about Randall Delgado is ‘hot-head’”), but now that there are more and more Asian prospects, we need to make an addition:
“the term from scouts i’ve heard about Hank Conger is ‘bird-killer’”
But that might be too vicious sounding and not in step with the Asians-are-mysterious-samurai thing that gets subtly perpetuated. So maybe Ichiro should be the model, evoking mystery, aloofness and mastery in equal measure:
“the term from scouts i’ve heard about Hak-ju Lee is ‘Japanese game show host’”

issue
You’re joking around of course, but there is a legitimate issue here.
I’ve been doing this long enough that I’ve noticed that black players who are obnoxious tend to get labled as “malcontents” or “troublemakers,” while white players who have exactly the same personality traits tend to be given less loaded labels…called “intense” or at worst jerks or assholes in extreme cases.
by John Sickels on Oct 7, 2025 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I think I'd rather...
be called a "malcontent" or "troublemaker" rather than an “asshole”. But you’re right, I’ve heard Jeff Kent labeled a “jerk” or “asshole”, Zambrano a “hot-head”, and someone like Elijah Dukes is a "troublemaker.
To be fair, there are certain players that I’ve heard called all of those names…Ty Cobbs (though post-era), Barry Bonds, Milton Bradley, and John Rocker (he’s known by many names" - Milton).
by Havok1517 on Oct 7, 2025 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions
difference
The difference is that a “red ass” is an asshole because he wants to win SO SO BAD and can’t help it. A “malcontent” is an asshole because that’s just the way “they” are, donchaknow.
by gogotabata on Oct 7, 2025 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, joking, but serious
It’s interesting to see how players/prospects become lightning rods for larger social prejudices — if a Lawrie or Paul O’Neill act like an idiot, it’s because they just want to win so badly. If a black dude does the same thing, it’s because he’s a malcontent. Latin guy, well then he’s a hot head (you know those latins and their temper!).

I’m not sure why the Mets do this deal. People tend to value prospects a lot more than MLB GMs on this site.
by King Billy Royal on Oct 6, 2025 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't think it's that obvious
Reyes is only under control for 2011 at $11M, and while he had a solid year it wasn’t great.
If the Mets could land a few high-quality prospects for Reyes, it’s not totally out of the question to believe that they’d take this kind of offer. I don’t think they’d take that specific offer- Bell isn’t useful for them with Wright around.
But an offer that includes two really good prospects and another solid one isn’t a bad offer for one year of Reyes.
Baseball is my preferred sport. It should be yours, too.

I agree with this
My point is that they would not want Bell in a deal for Reyes. Wright is one of the few building blocks for them. I do believe that they may trade Reyes, since they are rumored to be cutting salary, but Tillman, Bell, and Berry would not be nearly enough to get it done.
by King Billy Royal on Oct 6, 2025 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions
That particular deal seems like a non-starter from the Mets perspective
The money really isn’t the issue for the Mets. The problems have been how the money has been spent, not if the money is going to be spent.
Reyes did have an off year, which is a good reason to not trade him. If he rebounds, he could fetch more. Trading him now will get less, and create a hole at SS.
You also have to look at the needs at the club level, and the quality depth in the minor league system.
At the major league level, the Mets need to upgrade at 2B, possibly at C, and need 2 starting pitchers at WAR 3+ quality. That trade does not address these needs.
In the minor league system, middle infielders and catchers are scarce, and probably don’t project to an elite level with few exceptions. Those exceptions include 2B Reese Havens who has serious health issues, and SS Wilmer Flores who does not project to stay in the middle infield. That proposed trade does address the middle infield or catchers.
Finally, if Jose Reyes is traded away, who will play SS? The Mets don’t have anyone available who would be an adequate replacement, this proposed trade does not offer that replacement, and the free agent market doesn’t have a comparable replacement.

Could be too obscure:
But what about a low draftee by the Nats this year - Randolph Oduber? 13th round draft pick, outfielder, led the league (albeit GCL) in average, SLG and OPS. Got a decent bonus too, IIRC ($200k?), so had some projectable talent.
He seems to have been overlooked by the post-season prospects lists so far (read BA) - perhaps old for his age, but not overly so.
Can you get a read on him yet?

Frank Thomas was a tight end on an SEC team (Auburn- only for his freshman season, but still) and probably would’ve gone pretty high in the NFL draft if he continued to play football. Pujols isn’t even in his league athletically. You’re talking Winfield/ Bo Jackson/ Deion Sanders territory when you talk about The Big Hurt’s athleticism. He was a complete freak athletically. He was also too large at 6’6"/ 275lbs to play anywhere other than first. He was all-state football and baseball and I think people tend to underestimate his athleticism due to his size and playing first.

missed my point
My point was exactly that “a more athletic Frank Thomas” would be like one of the five best players ever; maybe only Pujols, Bonds or A-Rod could be in the discussion as fitting that label, and no one would tag Singleton with an “A-Rod at first base” comp.
Yeah, Frank Thomas used to play football, but Pujols was/is more athletic on the baseball diamond; he was fine at third and in left when he came up, runs the bases well for his size, and is one of the two or three best defensive players at his position. Whether Pujols has or hasn’t ever picked up a football or ping pong paddle or a four-square ball, he’s always been a more athletic baseball player than Thomas (who is one of the greatest hitters ever, and as you say, was no slouch of an athlete himself).

which BA is throwing out there pretty regularly these days. So, Singleton is going to be a more athletic version of a player (Thomas) who beyond his athleticism also is one of four player EVER to have .300 batting average, 500 home runs, 1,500 RBI, 1,000 runs and 1,500 walks in a career. I mean seriously, how could you even utter a line like that and not think you’ve eaten the brown acid. Not you, Punto, I’m talking about BA. And how could you lump Howard and Thomas into the same comp? They’re very different players with different career paths. BA has lost a lot of luster with me recently with the comps to first ballot HoFs. I don’t know what Singleton will turn out to be, but I’d bet the ranch that he comes nowhere close to Thomas’ career and never hits at Howard’s peak. These are rare players. It seems like he and Carlos Santana weren’t all that different 12-18 months ago, and now Santana is considered light years ahead. conger
If you look over Conger’s defensive numbers, he throws out an adequate number of runners, gives up very few passed balls, but makes a larger number of errors than most catchers. This is interesting…it fits the scouting reports pretty well, which indicate that he’s good at blocking pitches, so-so against runners, and a bit mistake-prone still due to inexperience. Everything I’ve heard about his “intangibles” is pretty positive, in terms of keeping the pitcher focused on the game and leading the team in the infield.
Overall with more experience I think he can be an average defensive catcher.

Yeah, I think it will. Of course even as a fly ball guy right now, he’s been very effective. The White Sox will regret that trade.

KW stabbed me in the heart...
with that trade. Edwin Jackson has been good, but how can you trade 6 or so years of Hudson for 1+ year of Jackson? Sox are lucky they stay in contention with the regularity they trade away their prospects.

Will he be able to hit in the majors or should Nats fans wait until Norris comes up for a hitting backstop?

He’ll never be a great hitter without improvements in his plate discipline, but he can hold down the job for a year or two until Norris is ready

Good tools…..speed, power, athletic….but raw approach at the plate holds him back. Grade C prospect with some sleeper potential if he sharpens up the strike zone

Travis D'Arnaud
What are your thoughts on D’Arnaud with the development of J.P. Arencibia? Is he forever blocked in Toronto? Is it a wait-and-see situation on how Arencibia does full time next spring? Or does D’Arnaud need a trade to reach the bigs?
Thank you.

You can never have too many catching prospects. D’Arnaud gives the Jays a nice fallback posiiton if Arencibia gets hurt or flames out. I wouldn’t worry about him being blocked at this point, he’s at least a year away from being ready to help anyway.

I like Kip and have since his Arizona State days. Gut feeling on him is very posititive….I see him as a guy who could hit .300 with plenty of doubles, a strong OBP, and better-than-expected defense one he gets more experience at 2b.

he could easily be argued as a better overall prospect than borchering/davidson especially, but that isn’t because of his bat.

I don't totally disagree with you...
but Dominguez did hit 18 HR in 2008 and has followed that up with double digit homers the following 2 seasons. While he didn’t have that follow up to his breakout season like many expected, and his peripheral numbers aren’t where they need to be, he does have some offensive potential. I also recently read that Dominguez will likely compete for the starting 3B spot this in the spring.

Personal Preference
Do you find yourself liking or gravitating toward a certain type of skill set in a prospect (or even ML ballplayer)? Evaluated as either an indicator of success or a personal preference, for both pitchers and hitters.
For example, I love position prospects with great plate discipline, like Logan Morrison over Chris Carter. I hate high-walk, high-K pitchers (my fear of Oliver Perez-clones reigns supreme).
by muybienbien on Oct 6, 2025 4:45 PM EDT reply actions
biases
I am aware of my biases. I used to be too focused on walks for hitters above all, but now i see that it isn’t the walks that matter, but walks within the context of everything else….the BB/K/AB ratio is what you have to look at, not just BB. I’m also increasingly drawn to player who don’t strike out very much, especially if they combine low strikeout rate with power.
I have a weakness for “scrappy second basemen who play above their tools.”
For pitchers, i love strikeouts strikeouts strikeouts, especially if there are grounders involved too. What I HATE are guys who supposedly have great stuff, but who have low strikeout rates. I am very suspicious of players who supposedly throw hard and have great stuff, but who can’t get guys to swing and miss. Strikeouts are fascist, yes, but I want my pitchers to be fascist.

In the Reds young players post
you mentioned not seeing Alonso as a future star. I’m not disagreeing with your assessment in any way (my view of him is fairly similar), but I’m just curious what your reasoning for that was?
For me, it depends a lot on what happens with his power. given the hamate injury, there’s some question what his power ceiling will eventually be.

I like the approach at the plate he’s shown so far, even BB/K ratio, perhaps more power than expected, granted the sample sizes are very very small with just over 100 at-bats. I think he could end up having a really good year in 2011

Yes, I think he is for real. Improvement this year was based on better health, better conditioning, and changes in his swing. He might need some consolidation time and slow down a bit next year, but I think overall this is genuine improvement

yankee catchers
Out of Jesus Montero, Gary Sanchez, JR Murphy, and Austin Romine, who will stick at catcher, can the others play a corner outfield position with 1stt base and third base are blocked off for the foreseeable future (text and arod)
by cjc9387 on Oct 6, 2025 6:04 PM EDT reply actions
If you want to deal with sucky defense then yes.
Not John but I like answering Yankee questions…
Jesus can play LF if you want Manny Ramirez in the field. He could have a good arm but that’s it. No range. Sanchez is too far away to tell but again he has a good arm but I doubt he would have range. Murphy actually played some time in RF before. Romine could maybe be a so-so defender but that’s based on nothing. I don’t see him having great range either.
And this might be moot because if Garnder can stay a 270/380/390 hitter with great defense he’s a lock to stay.
World Series attitude, champagne bottle life, nothing every changes so tonight is like tomorrow night.
