Some Chris Carter Video

I have about 60 different video snippets to work through. I'm not too happy with the quality of a lot of them...I was having a lot of trouble keeping the camera steady. The lighting wasn't great and am very much an amateur. I also seem to have taped a lot of really boring at-bats. Here is one of Chris Carter. More later on Sam Deduno, and other Midland, Tulsa, Frisco, Salt Lake, and Oklahoma City players.

Carter is a big guy but he is no slug, as I will make clear in my scouting report tomorrow.

You're right... that was a pretty boring at-bat... :p

although it kind of looks like Michael McKenry is flipping John off at @ 1:26

But he’s probably just scratching something in his eye.

I'm no scout

But his batspeed on the 3-2 pitch looked really good. Overall it doesn’t look like he’s swinging for the fences in a Price Fielder / Vlad / Pedroia type of max effort swing.

You're right about Carter.

He’s no slug. He’s actually similar in body type and athleticism to a young Jermaine Dye. Oakland farm director Keith Lieppmann still thinks he may wind up at a corner outfield spot in the long-term.

only with the A's

would Carter be considered for a corner OF spot along with Cust. I have watched him extensively in the AFL and Spring and he has no business running after a fly ball. IMO, his best option is 1b, then 3b (he can field, just has no range), then the OF. Running speed and OF range are two different things, ask Lastings Milledge

Fielding flyballs

Of course he doesn’t look natural out in one of the corner OF spots right now, he has very limited experience playing flyballs from the OF—we’re talking next to none. But that is no reason for him to be written off as a 1B-only player. Give him time to adjust and an opportunity to build some instincts out there.

by nobodyinparticular on Aug 19, 2025 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

either that

or just give him a batting heltmet and hope he doesn’t get hit in the head or negatively affect that stick.

I, for one, say let him play where he feels most comfortable. You don’t want to force him into a position he isn’t comfortable and have that carry over to his bat. Why mess with a kid’s psyche who is putting up triple crown numbers in AA? IMO, the bat is too special to risk messing with

then 3b (he can field, just has no range)

I care way less about errors than I do about range.

Suggestion on improving your video work

In Carter’s at-bat there are between 12 and 15 seconds between each swing, which I suspect is typical, maybe even a little fast. You could try pausing your video camera after each swing, relaxing your arm and counting to 10, and begin taping again. That way you’ll tend to hold your camera steadier and you will reduce a lot of dead-time in each video — this video would be under 30 seconds.

When it comes to video, I’m an amateur too, though as a reporter for a newspaper, I’m now expected to bring a video camera with me and shoot on occasion; I too struggle with holding the video steady.

I love you site and your work, by the way — keep up the great work.

Mono-pod. You’ll only have to worry about the side to side motion.

BTW, speaking of fast big guys

Anyone else see Kyle Blanks’s inside-the-parker yesterday? He was frigging busting it. I clocked him at about 15.5 seconds around the bases— that’s the rough equivalent of a 100M dash in 12.9 seconds. (I say rough because I don’t know exactly how many feet he ran. I estimated it at 400.)

12.9 won’t get you to the Olympics, but it’s not exactly limping around the basepaths.

it's not fast for a pro athlete by any means

but when you consider his weight, that is a-movin it.

and turns are hard.

100m is in a straight line for a reason.

by SuperBean on Aug 19, 2025 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well, yes

it isn’t blazing but showing even competent speed is impressive at that size. I’d be more worried about his acceleration going forward.

by Daniel Berlyn on Aug 19, 2025 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh yeah, that was impressive

I know Blanks is probably not an outfielder long term, but damn if he isn’t one of the most fun young players to watch. He’s huge, but like you said, he’s not just some big lumbering goof.

Speaking of Kyle Blanks...

Who do you guys think will be better, Blanks or Carter?

wallace

milb.com frontpage video has his 2 hr this week so far. the one off the lefty cleared the bleachers, had to be maybe 420-430+ or so, the other one was an opposite field hr to left center

Another HR for Carter

Just hit his 23rd of the year. .333 BA, 23 HRs, 96 RBI and 1.004 OPS right now. That HR ties him with Chad Tracy for the Texas League HR lead. Just 7 RBI behind the league lead as well.

Oh, and he is leading the league in BA and BBs. The dude is crazy good at the plate.

Is he playing 3b or 1b these days? Last I heard he was butchering everything at third.

Try...

…getting a telescoping uni-pod that you can brace on your seat between your legs. Way better than messing around with a tripod and is much easier on your arms.

Thanks for the vid.

WTF???

WTF?

Good lord man…I already admitted the video was bad. Most of them are. I have very little experience with a video camera.

I posted the Carter video because people were talking about him in other threads, and even in this crappy at bat you can see his physical size and his bat speed.

As for the crack about my wife, I’m banning you for that. The quality of posters has gone down a lot in the last couple of years, and it’s bullshit like this that is a perfect example. i’m way too damn lenient, and you don’t come into someone’s house and insult him like that. I have a tendency to suppress anger, and unfortunately for you I resolved a few days ago to express my anger more forcefully when it was justified.

Well it’s justified. Get the hell off my website.

Agreed John

He was way out of line with his comment. A healthy dialogue is always good for discussion. Taking personal shots is over the line. As Jeri likes to say ‘DUMBASS DELETED’!!!!

It really isn't even that bad, during the pitches which is all that matters the camera is pretty stable

and the narration is nice especially on an AB that wasn’t the most interesting in the world, but still valuable for those of us that don’t get to see players like carter in person.

Looking forward to the real scouting report.

Eventually, my colleague and I trotted from the two-bit seats to the three-bit seats to get a closer view of the action. - Jlaff on Turn Back the Clock Day

From a reader and very occasional poster,

this site and your insight are greatly appreciated by all. There are jerks in the world. Don’t let him get you down.

Now, what are your scouting thoughts on Carter?

And isn’t Midland full of talent?

black deer update

2 hits so far
1.400 ops in august so far

any discussion as carter for minor league player of the yr? doubt he’d win but maybe in the discussion?
an audition in AAA would be nice.

My Vote

Goes to the TBD (The Black Deer), besides the immense mancrush I have on this guy, he really is having an impressive season. I’m pullin for him!!

My complaint about the video

is that Carter isn’t doing anything in it. That is, its a walk, not a ball in play.
