Discussion Question
I'm driving back to Lawrence today. Normal posting schedule will resume Thursday.
In the meantime, here is a discussion question to keep you busy. If you had to win ONE major league game today, say it is the seventh game of the World Series, and to start this game you had to pick one minor league pitcher, who is currently at the A-BALL level, and who has no major league experience, who would you pick and why?

The 2009 Texas Rangers offense: sigh...

All Ranger fans agree
I also like the Friedrich discussion below, but Perez might be able to hold his own right now for a game.

Jordan Lyles
Fills up the strike zone. Misses bats.

Aaron Pribanic
and let the defense do all the work. Assuming I have a great IF defense to take full advantage of his glorious GB tendencies, that is…

Pribanic's a great choice
Pribanic’s teammate Brett Lorin wouldn’t be bad, either. Not the groundball pitcher that Pribanic is, but 80.2ip, 52h, 20bb, 82k’s.

Casey Kelly
The command and ground ball tendencies he has displayed are tremendous for a 19 year old.

Christian Friedrich
Other than the fact that he’s currently hurt, I would feel safe saying he’s closer to the majors than any other A-ball pitcher right now. Has a great K/BB ratio, doesn’t give up many hits, and has a great track record. Add that to the reports of his tenacity, and I think he’d be a great option.

exactly
who i was going to say so - plus one, as they say
Id take Friedrich in a matchup vs Martin Perez if we are talking THIS October, that is. Its almost a trick question because Friedrich could just as well be on the brian Matusz career path but the Rockies have been more conservative with him.

Hmm
It’s hard to say what we can draw from Friedrich’s performance this year, because as a college-trained lefty who has good command of a plus curve, you’d expect him to handle advanced A ball (let alone the inexplicable decision to start him in the Sally League) without too many problems. Frankly I was mildly surprised that he didn’t start the year in AA, which was always going to be the first destination for him that was going to mean something.
No doubt he’s projecting as a solid major league pitcher and probably is much closer to being as good as he’ll ever be than a lot of his peers (making him a very fine candidate for this discussion), but I’m not getting too excited about him just yet.

Doesn't qualify
He already has MLB experience.

My top three...
1) Friedrich
(gap)
2) Martin Perez
3) Casey Crosby

but i definitely mind the gap.

Just for fun
I don’t really think he is the best option for a game today, but Nick Hagadone might be in the discussion in a couple more months.

Nathan Eovaldi
Because he’s been untouchable for a month and a half.

What about
adding Matt Moore to the discussion. Since the beginning of June he has stopped walking many batters while still striking them out and getting lots of grounders.

He’s not nearly as talked about as the other guys listed above, but his stuff ranks right up there with Perez’s, and he has flashed much improved control over these last couple months. Moore seems to be universally underrated as a prospect.

Moore
what sort of stuff does he throw? The K, HR and hit rates are impressive.

His fastball reached 96 sitting at 92-94 and flashes a 65 curve.

Up until this morning
I would have said Michael Main, but that was before I found out he had some undiagnosed problem.
Despite his wildness this year, Id take his stuff. The fact that it has to be A level player makes it a tough choice.
I could have also gone with Jeremy Jeffress, but then I realized you wanted the highest potential, not just the highest.
