St. Louis Cardinals Farm System DIscussion

I'm pushing hard to have the White Sox done today. The next team on the list is the St. Louis Cardinals. Use this thread to discuss Cardinals prospects.

Shelby Miller

Interested to see where he ranks. B+ or B?
I don’t see this system as having many B grades. A large amount of C+ type prospects.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

Shelby fan here

Best fastball of the ‘09 high school bunch. I’ll say B+.

Yeah

If Skaggs’ B- for LAA is any indication then Miller/Matzek/Turner/Wheeler are all B to B+.

B at most

considering the grades of other 2009 draftees, i don’t see how you can rank him higher than that. Wheeler was a B. Crow was a B. Hobgood was a B-.

baseball rules.

This.

I’d say Miller’s a B even without the other grades. High flameout possibility. Not to say the freakish talent isn’t there, but he’s not even near being the safest high school arm from the ’09 class.

yeah

I’m between a B- to a B right now for Shelby Miller, probably a B

I couldn’t go B+ yet, but thats my .02 cents

Any factual evidence at all towards this rumor?

Carlos Carrasco, Alex White along with Tanner Scheppers to the Twins
Glen Perkins and Beau Mills to the Rangers
Francisco Liriano and the rights to Boof Bonser + a PTBL to the Indians

(will Smoak and Feliz go to Fla. for Josh Johnson?)

Mid level prospects

I see a handful of guys that had promise where their future is currently in question:
Daryl Jones
Adam Ottavino
Jon Jay
Peter Kozma
Jaime Garcia
Allen Craig

A few guys with some upside and promise:
Lance Lynn
Daniel Descalso
Robert Stock

What about David Freese? Will he have a starting position this year?

Freese

He will start in the majors if they manage to re-sign Holliday. If not, though, they might look towards picking up someone else at 3B in order to help the offense.

I’m not sure there are really any good options in free agency that will provide enough over what Freese can do with the glove and the bat to really be worth the money spent, but then they need to improve the offense SOMEHOW and if they do not get Holliday there will be very few options to do so.

With Figgins off the market there really isn’t much appealing to replace him… Beltre is nice, but Busch Stadium will sap his power in a way very similar to Safeco Field, so his bat probably won’t be much better than Freese’s.

Garcia

I think after his run at the end of the season they give him a fair shot to be the fifth starter with Pineiro, Smoltz and Wellemeyer packing their bags. I’ve been a Jaime Garcia fan for a while and I think he’d be a solid back end type guy. He won’t strike out a ton of guys (even though he’s done well in the minors), but he gets groundballs. He’ll need to prove he’s got the durability to last a full season though and that will be his hardest task.

And just a few thoughts on some others: I don’t see Ottavino as much more than a AAAA player. He’ll fill an injury/emergency role like Boggs and a few others did this year, but in the end I see him sticking with a team as a Blake Hawksworth type. Lynn is another personal favorite and he just seems like what teams look for in their 3 or 4 starters - an innings eating, strike throwing horse.

I'm just hoping they don't let Mcgwire within 100 yards of any prospect

Or else guys are going to start looking like this:

You’re name has 2k9 in it — what are you some 8 year-old who makes Pillsbury Doughboy cookies and jerks off to that bullshit video game with Tim Lincecum on the cover--

Tyler Henley

Had something of a breakout season, and if I recall, John’s always liked him. Might be a tweener though.

Allen Craig anyone ?

Man this guy MUST be the unluckiest (read underrated) minor leaguer in baseball. All he did was hit .322 /.374 /.547 with 26 HRs at AAA & STILL gets no love nor a chance.

True he is “old” for a prospect (24) but has hit at every level….

Craig

Will get some playing time this season… but it’s a huge question of where. His 3B defense isn’t supposed to be very good, 1B is obviously occupied, and he has not really player much LF, so what can they really do with him?

Others to consider:

Daniel Descalso
Steve Hill (if he sticks at C)
Pete Kozma (some power for a SS)
Matt Adams JUST nasty
Ps
Eduardo Sanchez (nasty at AA) at 20
Lance Lynn (needs to cut his BBs)
Blake King
Nick Additon (fine 09 season but how much upside ?)
Ramon Delgado

& ofcourse the 09 draftees such as Miller/Kelly/Stock/Bittle….
