MOD- Oakland Athletics

Hello A's Fans!

I am scouting director for the A's in the Annual MLB Mock Draft to take place 1pm EST on May 31st. I am also working with adschofield, a member of this site and also a buddy of mine from www.nfldraftcountdown.com. EazyB81 will also be chiming in I assume. Both eazyB and scho did the KC Draft last year

Some Thoughts I Have:

-We need to boost LHP depth in the organisation. Two of three LHP in last years draft, (Schlereth and Berger) were unsigned and even though trades brought in Brett Anderson and Gio Gonzalez, it still leaves a void of solid LHP on the lower levels.

-College First Standpoint. There have been rumours of a "Shift In Philosophy", in which the A's put more money into Latin signings and the Amateur Draft. This could open doors for High Schoolers at 14 or 39, but I love college baseball and usually follow a college first policy in my previous mocks.

-Supplemental Pick. The A's have pick 39 as compensation for Shannon Stewart. Some of my favorite prospects are expected to go there.

So What Do You All Think?

39th pick?

So we really get a supplemental pick this year? I was under the impression that the league ruled that the A’s would not receive a pick for Shannon Stewart because he was signed to a minor league deal. And I am fairly sure the A’s first pick is at number 12.

As far as who to target with the first pick I think the A’s will look for a college player, at first I was thinking hitter but I’m not sure that the value will be there for a position player. If somehow Beckham or Alonso slip that would be nice but I doubt it.

39

yeah, i’m pretty sure the 39th pick belongs to the cardinals. i think b/c stewart signed a minor league deal that he requires no compensation even though he made the roster.

Yeah...

That’s my bad…I told Fisch that, and I was wrong, lol…I just saw BA’s order and it said we get a comp. pick if Shannon Stewart was signed, and I saw that he was playing for the Jays, and made an assumption.

Now, to my opinion…Fisch and I differ a bit in that I am a huge fan of taking HS players, although I do like college hitters. Mainly, I go for College hitters and HS pitchers in the first, while focusing mainly on HS players later unless a college player has a lot of stars.

LHP

Don’t see this as an issue. Smith, Eveland, Gio, Anderson…that’s plenty enough not to specifically target LHP. The obvious issues with the A’s are infield and catcher. Impact bats as well. You can never ignore pitching, but if the A’s were to ever focus less on pitching in a draft, this would be the one.

So, at 12, they’re too low most likely to get Beckham, Posey, or Smoak, and they’re too high to take the polished low-upside guys they like. They might have to step outside their box. I’m guessing Alonso is too similar to Doolittle for the A’s to keep the A’s from another player. One of Hunt or Scheppers will get to them, but the A’s traditionally don’t take guys with command issues.

If Posey, Beckham, or Smoak somehow get to them, I think the A’s would take any of the three. Jemile Weeks is a strong possibility. Christian Friedrich would the closest pitcher to what the A’s usually do. Casey Kelly will probably get a strong look. Brett Wallace would be a reach, but if the A’s think he can play third, he could be a go here.

The A’s are at 12, 58, 90, and 124 btw.

Good analysis

I agree with a lot of what you said here, and I think a big question is if we want to stick to the A’s usual strategy of going for a polished high-floor type player in the first round or if it’s better to go for the best value even if you think it is someone who the A’s would probably not draft in real life.

by DiegoAsFan on May 13, 2025 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kind of begs the question

Is the goal here to predict the draft? Or draft what we think they ought to draft?

I’d vote for the latter. Predicting that your team will do something stupid strikes me as morbid and unfun.

After reading the article on Scout.com

I think the A’s can afford to gamble a little in this draft with picks that are high risk and high reward type players. Two I would love them to go after would be Gerritt Cole and Ethan Martin if either is available. Cole for his power arm and Martin for his bat(Yes I think his bat will play out.) I pray pray they don’t select Christian Friedrich and waste a pick on him. He’s got major league journeyman written all over him if he even makes it.

I really hope that they’re new approach to expanding the developement budget in Latin America applys to this years draft as well especially with the 2nd-6th round picks where I hope they get some players and PAY over slot to get some serious upside talent.

Gerritt Cole = Boras

Any player who has signed Boras as their Agent, or Advisor… you might as well take him off the A’s Draft Board (If the goal is to think like A’s Management think).

HS Pitchers

I for one am not a big fan of picking Prep arms early in the first round. Unless the kid really looks like a can’t miss talent who has shown some picthability already. I have to say that none of the HS pitchers really impresses me right now, but I will admit I don’t know too much about them so I could be convinced.

I am definitely not sold on Cole, he seems like he is rated this high solely on velocity which concerns me a bit. From what I’ve heard his control, pitching motion and secondary stuff is all suspect right now. While that doesn’t mean he can’t progress I think it makes him too much of a risk for the 12th pick, especially when the A’s are so deep in pitching.

If I were to look for a high-upside prep player I would be interested in Aaron Hicks at this spot. While raw 5-tool position prospects can be just as risky as prep pitchers, with the lack of athletic, toolsy players in the system it might be worth the risk.

Gerrit Cole

Have a look. I like the move that comes w/ the semi-sidearm delivery. Very Roy Oswalt-ish.

Havens and Gillespie

What do you guys think about Reese Havens and Connor Gillespie? They would both be reaches at 12 but they generally fit the profile of A’s recent first rounders and would help at shallow positions in the A’s system.

Is there enough potential in their bats to justify grabbing them this early or is their just too many question marks about their ability to be plus hitters at the highest level?

eh

It’s definitely too early at 12

SS

The Farm is in dire need of some IF Talent. Chavez is a huge question mark. And Crosby is horrible (and gone after 2009). Obviously, I want the A’s to take the “Best Player Available”. But if it’s a close call between selecting a P/OF/IF… they NEED to take the Infielder.

Jemile Weeks

What’s the consensus on Weeks? During the community Mock Draft voting the A’s ended up with Jemile Weeks but he hasn’t been mentioned here yet. Has his stokc dropped or raised in the last month or so?

I’m kind of luke warm on Weeks as he tends to remind me of a more athletic Cliff Pennington. I wouldn’t be upset if we ended up with him but I wouldn’t really be excited either.

by DiegoAsFan on May 16, 2025 2:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

My pappy always told me:

you can never have enough good pitching. Considering the amount of pitching the A’s have in the high minors, and the lack of offense that they are currently suffering from, I would say that the emphasis should be on position players. There aren’t too many OFs/INFs that have stood out. I’m not a big minors guy though, I know a little about a little. Am I wrong here?

Brett Wallace

I bet the real life A’s take him. His stats just scream Money Ball!!!!

Martinez

What do you all think are the chances we could get Harold Martinez at 58? Or even 90? Hard to know just how far his stock has slipped, but I’m still intrigued by him (a right handed hitting Chavez?).

by D O on May 18, 2025 12:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Totally agree on Martinez

Harold martinez is absolutely who i would love to fall to the A’s in round 2.

My ideal draft would be Gordan Beckman and Martinez although I doubt beckman makes it to 12.

I will get weird looks at this but Fields at 12 (to save some $$ since he is a senior) and go after high upside HS players later w above slot $$ would make me very happy. Plus a future closer could make Huston stock up the minors even more.

by Bud Light on May 18, 2025 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i don't know why people always suggest Fields as a money saver

Yes he is a senior but he is a Boras client who turned down big money last year and first round college seniors don’t seem to cut their price much.
I think Casey Weathers got 1.8 or 2mil last year

re

Scheppers getting hurt makes it a lot less likely that one of the premium guys slip through the cracks, unless the Reds reach for Melville or Kelly. There’s a good chance even Alonso is off the board. Farhan has said the A’s can gamble a bit with this pick. Aaron Hicks may be the guy, as an outfielder.

One dark horse that I think should be mentioned is Eric Thames. Production caught up with tools this year (and not driven by a big fluky batting average). His bat was damn near as good as the premium players save Beckham, plus speed/steals, plus CF. He’d be considered a big reach, but it’s not like the A’s care what BA thinks. I’d actually be very pleased if the A’s took the chance. Local guy too.

Organizational Needs

in order:

Middle Infield
Third Base
Centerfield
Starting Pitcher
Corner Outfield
First Base
Relief Pitcher

That is how I see it.

I want the A’s to take the best player they can get, period. But I would prefer that player to be a Shortstop or Second Baseman, because we have absolutly nothing there in the minors, and our last high SS pick ended up busting big time.

The A’s also need to get away from their “guys will develop power” philosophy and draft guys who actually have some power, rather than drafting guys with no power and hoping that they will eventually rise from 5 homeruns to 30. Not everyone is Jason Giambi, and HGH is likely the reason for that.

by Zonis on May 19, 2025 1:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Any type of consensus emerging?

Some good discussion above but where do we stand in regards to the first pick. I’m still heavily leaning towards a hitter, none of the pitchers who look like they’ll go around our pick really do much for me.

My preferences of guys we could have a shot at:

1. Gordon Beckham (probably won’t last to 12 but doesn’t hurt to have him atop the draft board)
2. Yonder Alonso
3. Aaron Hicks
4. Brett Wallace
5. Shooter Hunt
6. Jemile Weeks
7. Ike Davis
8. Conor Gillespie
9. Eric Thames
10. Reese Havens

re

Yeah, I’ve changed my guess on Alonso. With that walk rate to go with everything else, I’m guessing now he’d be too tempting to pass. I don’t think he’ll get to us though.

I’m right with you on your list, other than Thames, who I’d have at 5 minimum. It really sucks that the A’s didn’t get the 39th. A couple of these guys would probably be there.

FTR, I’m kind of expecting they’re taking Friedrich.

by 31Boots on May 19, 2025 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm really hoping it's not Friedrich

It’s not that I really think Christian Friedrich is a terrible choice at this slot, it just seems that if he was the A’s pick he would become maybe the 7th or 8th best pitching prospect in the system. That’s just a little too low on the depth chart for a 12th overall pick for my tastes.

Any other year I could get behind a Friedrich pick because getting, high-floor quick moving guys was crucial to the A’s success. But with the depth at picthing through out the organization it would take a lot of people to fail for Friedrich to really have an impact.

With what Zaidi said recently about the A’s being able to withstand a little more risk in the draft than any time in the near-past I am pretty confident that they won’t go with Friedrich. Whether they will take a chance on a project like Hicks is another story but I can always hope.

Saw some of the Miami-UNC game on Saturday

I was not terribly impressed by Weeks. He has an odd swing, almost turns his back to the pitch before coming forward. He also had a couple of rough plays in the field, although they weren’t entirely his fault.

He just does not look like a #12 pick.

Been relatively quiet on this topic but...

I agree that Gordon Beckham should be at the top of the list but if he’s off the board I’d like to see the A’s go after Ethan Martin. Plus defense at 3B, plus arm, athleticism and raw power. If ultimately his bat can’t hack it he’s got upside as a pitcher. Lot’s of upside at a critical position in the organization.

If...

Alonso is there, I’m taking him…I think myself and Fisch have agreed on that…Hicks is also on top of my board (of players who would be realistically there at 12).

Also, it looks like I’ll be doing the drafting since Fisch will likely not be there on draft day

Later picks

Anybody got any ideas on guys to target in the 2nd-5th rounds of the draft?

I don’t really know too much about guys outside the first round but in poking around some draft sites I came across a few names I thought I would throw out there;

Harold Martinez, 3B
Brandon Crawford, SS
Tyler Ladendorf, SS
Ryan Flaherty, SS
David Adams, 2B
Cutter Dykstra, INF

And a pitcher who I like in later rounds is Jacob Thompson out of UVA

by DiegoAsFan on May 21, 2025 3:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

We are taking hard looks at both UVA middle infielders, Greg Miclat and David Adams. We are also looking at OSU SS Jason Ogata.

I think Dykstra and Flaherty go in the supplemental round honestly, and now I really see Martinez honoring his commitment to Miami.

We have a college pitcher that we are touting like crazy in the second. We will not rest until he is ours, however we would reveal him, but that’s a spoiler, Scho and I will keep it a surprise.

and Blee, I really love Scott Gorgen

Good call on Gorgen

I hadn’t heard much about him previously but I could definitely see the A’s grabbing this guy.

Control, command, and two above average off-speed pitches more than make up for his stature in my mind.

by DiegoAsFan on May 22, 2025 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have...

A serious man crush on Scott Gorgen…Honestly, I value him as a late 1st rounder (prob. b/c I don’t put too much weight in height and build)

Oh and Fisch, I think our pitcher might be there in the 3rd

by adschofield on May 22, 2025 8:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

re

There are so many things with Gorgen to like that his size becomes near irrelevant, imo. He didnt start pitching full time until his senior year of high school so his arm is fresh. Not to mention the fact that he doesn’t throw a slider, another plus to the condition of his arm. His change up is absolutely remarkable and will become one of the best in professional baseball the second he’s signed. While he can be erratic at times, his command within the zone is very good. As I said, he’s a guy the A’s could very likely target. I personally could see him going to Oakland in the 4th round.

While the A’s are at it, I wouldn’t mind seeing them take Scott’s brother Matt near rounds 15-20

by blee1134 on May 23, 2025 2:33 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hey fisch...

Hey fisch, this is Smokey Joe. For the A’s first rounder, I think they should definitely go with Alonso if he’s there. He is the perfect type of hitter the A’s love, and would provide another left handed presence in the lineup. You could stick Barton or Alonso, who ever is the lesser defender, at DH.

by Smokey Joe on May 24, 2025 9:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It's either...

Alonso or Aaron Hicks

Also, guys I’ll be doing the drafting for the A’s, since Fisch thinks he’s too good for us and is going to a concert : D

by adschofield on May 25, 2025 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand the fascination with Hicks

But Alonso is a 1B/DH only.

Between Barton, Cust, Doolittle and Carter the A’s seem to have those spots covered.

I remember reading a long time ago about the Phillies doing an end of season rundown on their farm system. They kept takling about this hitter and that hitter and how they were limited defensively. They kept saying, “well, this guy can always go to LF just to get his bat in the line-up.” Finally, one of the scouts got fed up and said we’ve got about a half dozen guys we’ve earmarked for LF! What about the other positions?!

Drafting Alonso would lead me to asking the same thing.

If the A’s let Ellis walk they’ll be looking to replace their starting SS and 2B within two years. There is no replacement for Chavez in the system. If you have doubts about Carlos Gonzalez being the long term answer in CF then that is a problem area as well.

I understand about not reaching for need, but drafting a 1B at #12 would be a luxury pick for a team that has legit needs elsewhere.

I'm with you, but...

this leads us to whom? What I’m really afraid of is that they’re going to draft Havens. I don’t know what it is about him (maybe I’m gun-shy following the Pennington debacle). I know John likes him, but I have a hard time getting excited about a college shortstop with limited power potential and athleticism who is going to have to move to third. Something about this guy just screams Russ Adams as a best case. Or something. I sorta like Weeks, and I guess he could move to CF if the infield doesn’t work out, but I don’t know. We need some upside in this organization. I feel like we’re in a tough spot as far as having to reach for organizational needs, or make what is, as you say, a luxury pick.

By the way, grover, have you made up your mind already about Ryan Sweeney? I’m liking him more than I expected to.

by D O on May 26, 2025 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ryan

He’s played well enough to keep getting at bats but he hasn’t performed well enough for me to stick with him if he starts to struggle. Gonzalez and Buck are destined for Oakland, Sweeney needs to take this opportunity to prove he deserves to be the 3rd guy in the mix.

I think the LAST thing they should do is draft anyone glued to 1B/LF with the #12 pick. Short of Justin Smoak somehow trickling down that way, you just can’t do it. There’s no need in the organization for them. I think the talent level at this high in the first round and the need for SS/2B/3B/CF, you almost HAVE to draft a player from them.

I just don’t think you’re going to get the talent you want, and you need to justify the pick at that position at the number #12 slot.

Is there a risk, with him,

of him going into another sport? If a guy is rated as a top athlete in center field, you can bet some college football coach sees “wide receiver/DB” when he watches him.

Losing him to football wouldn’t be the absolute worst thing in the world now that teams get compensated for unsigned draft picks, but it certainly wouldn’t be a good thing either.

Overall he sounds a lot like Desmond Jennings. Which is basically a good thing.

Zach Collier

He’s probably behind Hicks (and maybe others) as far as HS outfielders, and the main reason for that—the fact that he may not be a true CF—is of particular concern given the organizational needs we’ve outlined. Still, I like Collier a lot and if I were running the draft I’d be tempted to grab him. Anybody else have any interest in him at #12? Over Hicks, even?
