my sound on my TV is broken

fuck it

I just am watching it on my brother’s TV. Really glad I can listen to the brilliance of Gary Thorne now

Bad form, bad effort. You can tell it’s an exhibition.

E5 Middlebrooks?

I was going to mention that

Viciedo sure swings hard

His swing looks really long

yes, I noticed that too

Of course, he probably hasn’t seen too many fastballs of that caliber before. He looked a little overmatched, didn’t think his swing looked that bad in previous looks.

If the guy looks good and does something really nice, that’s great. Kipnis demonstrated his skills with that homer.

"Is Prince Fielder a legitimate threat to your stash of potato chips?" -Bronn

by kauf67 on Jul 10, 2025 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

My interpretation...

is that KLaw thinks that Miller has a better chance to be a #1 than Teheran, but not that Teheran can’t be a #1.

by dbreer23 on Jul 10, 2025 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe Law said recently

that Miller and Moore were ahead of Teheran for him.

by blackoutyears on Jul 11, 2025 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

the question was part of his last chat

and he didn’t so much rank them, per se. I think it was more along the lines of who could hold up as a #1 (vs. #2-5) in the rotation better.

And I actually agree with that assessment.

Even though Altuve is 2-2

he may have dropped some in my mind. Yes, 2 hits are nice, but neither were hit particularly hard and it makes me wonder how many of his 2-4 nights are similar to this

by gore51 on Jul 10, 2025 6:50 PM EDT reply actions

neither was I

but he’s a guy who is getting consideration for the top-100 I’m in the process of making, not sure if I’d be willing to put him there now

hahahaha what?

based on the two at bats tonight, both of which resulted in him reaching base (against pretty good pitchers — Skaggs & Miller), you have decided that he isn’t worthy of top-100 prospect status?

by jwa1417 on Jul 10, 2025 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

you're missing the point

what I’m saying is that seeing him live is a lot less impressive than reading his nightly boxscores. I’ll probably get over it, but it was more a comment of shock and disappointment than of sincerity

by gore51 on Jul 10, 2025 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

ok

i’m just confused as to how you came to this conclusion. he didn’t tear the cover off the ball the first two times up, so now you think all of his hits are unimpressive and aren’t hit solidly. not sure how being 2-2 against top pitching prospects could possibly lead to shock and disappointment

by jwa1417 on Jul 10, 2025 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

it's that it made me start to question how many of his hits in the minors have been similar to the ones today

I base most of my rankings on scouting reports, athleticism, and projection, not numbers, so for Altuve, a guy who ranks SOLELY on numbers, it causes some questioning whether or not it’s legit.

Do you see what I’m saying? I mean, I totally get what you’re saying, and I get what I’m trying to say, just having a tough time putting it into a cohesive thought lol

by gore51 on Jul 10, 2025 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

haha yes

i do understand what you’re saying. but you obviously realize that two ABs in this setting (everyone’s gotta be nervous/pressing a bit) should have ZERO bearing on his ranking.

i understand you’re saying it’s disappointing to see the leading hitter in the minors not rip line drives here and it might lead one to believe he is dinking and dunking his way to a .382 average somehow, but come on.

by jwa1417 on Jul 10, 2025 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

still not getting it

its like seeing LeBron James or Dwight Howard in person…

by daveh33 on Jul 10, 2025 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I get that

the thing is that now finally seeing him live, it just doesn’t inspire much confidence. His swing doesn’t seem to generate all that much power (although neither did/does Pedroia’s), likely due to a lack of length in his limbs. He’s going to make contact, that’s a given in my mind, I’m just very afraid that too many of his milb hits are going to turn into mlb outs for him to be more than a UTIL guy.

by gore51 on Jul 10, 2025 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

ehh

don’t think his BABIP will drop once he gets to the bigs. i think exactly what you just said “he’s going to make contact, that’s a given in my mind” makes him a sure thing major leaguer. and a sure thing major leaguer is a top 100 prospect ten times out of ten

by jwa1417 on Jul 10, 2025 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

"and a sure thing major leaguer is a top 100 prospect ten times out of ten"

This is where we disagree. My ranks would be more upside oriented than yours. I would rather place 10 high upside guys and get 3 above average guys than place 10 low ceiling guys and end up with 9 guys who are utility guys and maybe a fringe starter

by gore51 on Jul 10, 2025 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

don't think altuve is a utility/fringe starter

i’m not saying he’ll be pedroia but everything about him SCREAMS polanco to me. i wouldn’t put 100 guys (~30 complete unknowns) ahead of that

by jwa1417 on Jul 10, 2025 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

sure

I respect that. I think I’m low on Altuve in comparison to the rest of the community, which is expected since I factors numbers less than most. Saying Altuve could be Polanco is respectable and would just likely justify a top-100 ranking. Not sure if I buy it yet still, but it’s a total fair statement

by gore51 on Jul 10, 2025 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

so you’re basing all his minor league hits on 3 AB’s in an exhibition game.

I mean, that's a good point

but I don’t know, it just kind of got me thinking about how even though he’s 2-2 like he often is, it’s a very unimpressive 2-2 and for a guy who I was basing my ranking of solely on numbers, it’s a bit concerning.

true

but it’s just 2 ABs. Granted it’s all a lot of us have seen of him, but I’d like to see more than half a game before I make any kind of statement. The Futures game is more of a fun time and a chance to see up and coming prospects than a real scouting opportunity.

Living in Corpus where Altuve is currently playing I can tell you that

most of his hits are not like the ones tonight. The kid has some decent pop in his bat. I hate using the term small sample size as it gets over used alot but 3 ABs in an exhibition game is not the best time to make a judgment on on any player. If I went off of performance so far in this Harper looks like he wont make it.

by StrosSouth on Jul 10, 2025 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, getting so worked up over 2 ABs is retarded

No offense.

Please watch this in-game at bat from last year:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0laILwIc_w&feature=player_detailpage#t=81s

The little guy is more than capable of taking compact, powerful rips at the ball and making very hard contact. He’s also capable of loosening up and swinging just to make any contact.

by OremLK on Jul 10, 2025 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you misunderstood

2 AB’s didn’t alter my opinion at all. I think Altuve is a nice contact hitter with some gap powerin the minors but how much power he’ll show on that contact in the majors is not a certainty. He doesn’t have the advantage of being left handed or possessing blazing speed that a lot of contact hitters do so he’ll need more pop to maximize his effectiveness. Still one of the best 2B prospects out there.

Showed multiple strong offerings, good life on his stuff. I think he needs to refine his approach from the stretch a bit, thought he was rushing his delivery and losing command. Other than that, looks very nice.

91-95

according to Badler’s post-game writeup. Plus velo for a LHP, but let’s not break out Lefty Strasburg accolades just yet.

pitch f/x says he was better than that

I don’t think anybody’s expecting or asking for Southpaw Strasburg, but that was one of the shows of pure talent from the left side I’ve seen since pre-TJ Liriano.

by nixa37 on Jul 11, 2025 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

No, 91-95

in games this season, not this lone inning. People are conflating this game’s velo with what he does over the course of a game, and it’s not so. Callis compounded it with his “Moores’ stuff is better than Price’s” tweet, which is silly. I just saw Price in June and he rarely threw a FB below 93, averaged 95/96 with both FBs, both peaking at 97/98, a velo he was still reaching in the 8th. The slider averaged 90 mph. Give me the new! Screw the almost as new!

green

This guy hasn’t filled out like everybody thought he would. I think he’s trying to maintain as much agility as possible to stick at SS and it’s repressing his power potential.

Oh, and because it’s the first thing people ask about him, when I saw him I thought he wasn’t quite an everyday shortstop due to his arm. He can make the routine stuff, couldn’t see him making anything too difficult.

Talking to the Bullpen Banter guys,

Green reminds me a bit of Drew Stubbs, in that he clearly has power but it isn’t showing up in games yet. Wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up hitting for more power once he’s in the bigs a la Stubbs. It’s a nice swing and he’s well put together. Should be a very good 2B.

by blackoutyears on Jul 11, 2025 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions

swing is good

Good wiry strength, good swing with some loft. Saw him hit an opposite field HR last year against Robbie Ross that was a nice little piece of work. But dude really does need to get stronger. If you look at his side profile, he’s a twig compared to where he should be at right now.

by mrkupe on Jul 11, 2025 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

He's slender,

but he’s got a great frame, and like Stubbs I think he’s stronger than he looks. The good news is that there’s nowhere to go but bulkier. And if he does stay at SS, then I’d be less worried. If he moves to 2B…

by blackoutyears on Jul 11, 2025 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

my concern was

I’ve sized up Green in person last year and two weeks ago. Physically, he looked exactly the same. And he’s had this same kind of frame since forever. People have been expecting him to fill out and it’s just not happening. I don’t know if it’s body type or genetic tendency or a deliberate effort to avoid putting on weight that would shift him off SS that much faster.

I don’t think he’ll be able to make the throws going to his left that he’ll need to do at the major league level. His arm strength just isn’t quite there. He does well enough going to his right with time to load his arm.

Most overrated prospect in the game today

Julio Teheran: Good fastball that was straight and telegraphed into a HR, good but not great change as he has command issues with it, and a below average curve. I like Viz more due to having better pure stuff. Noticed Teheran isn’t missing as many bats this year.

by Bravesin07 on Jul 10, 2025 8:56 PM EDT reply actions

I think he's awesome, but I agree about his fastball being mostly straight

He’s still going to be a hell of a pitcher in my opinion.

Also, I’m a diehard Braves fan.

by High and Inside on Jul 10, 2025 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

He's a little bit overrated

But I don’t think I’d say “most overrated”. Top 20 prospect for sure but not a top 5 prospect like BA has him.

I think this board has been too hesitant to project with prospects sometimes. Projection is a big part of prospect analysis. Gotta remember Teheran is only 20 and will likely improve his command and off-speed stuff quite a bit.

http://www.crawfishboxes.com

by OremLK on Jul 10, 2025 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

This thinking is just insane

He’s a 20 year old posting a 2.69 FIP in AAA despite coming into this season with just 44 professional starts and just 7 above A ball. Scouts who watch him clearly think far more of his stuff than you do. He gets rave reviews for his work ethic and maturity. Everyone in the industry seems to love him and the numbers are outstanding. What is there not to like?

And seriously, who other than Adam Foster has described Teheran’s curve as a below average pitch? Does he throw some below average ones, sure, but he’ll also snap off his fair share of plus or better curves as well which shows the potential is clearly there for it to be a swing and miss offering. Like many young pitchers he just needs to refine his consistency with the pitch.

And seriously, Vizcaino over Teheran? The kid that’s relying on pretty much just two pitches that’s posted lesser numbers in high-A and AA this year than Teheran has at AAA?

by nixa37 on Jul 10, 2025 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

agree with some of this

i never loved him…looks like his offspeed stuff isnt there, and i agree that he has a straight fastball, but he showed a plus change to harper imo…if it was only once.

“I love Altuve,” said one pro scout. “I think his swing is good and he plays above his tools. He does the small things. He has a baseball sense, he makes contact and he’s always in the right place at the right time. For me, his size doesn’t matter because I think he’s going to hit.”

Couldn’t resist quoting it.

Agreed

Not much of a ceiling, but he has the hit tool and defense to be a solid regular.

+1 (or +2, not sure)

I didn’t know that we were all against Jose Altuve in the first place, though. In fact, he’s probably one of the best few prospects in that rather barren system. I’d take him over J.D. Martinez in a heartbeat, for instance.

Wow

real disappointed I missed it. Especially after hearing about how Matt Moore lit up the radar gun. Does anyone know where I can catch some clips of the game? I’m mostly interested in the pitchers.
