Discussion Question: What Should Happen With Brandon Wood?

If you were omnipotent and could control the transaction destiny of Brandon Wood, what would you do with him? What team should be willing to give him a chance? Does he deserve one? Would getting him out of Anaheim revive his career? Should he go to Japan? Would he become a superstar in Japan?

I would have him go to Japan.

Since Japan is so different, it apparently helps hitters learn to command the zone, which he really needs. Have him over there for a year, bring him back on a MiLB deal, and call him up some time in the year.

Of course, this is all fantasy and has little to do with his current situation.

Mostly agree

The only thing I don’t agree on is bringing him back on a MiLB deal. If he performs well in Japan he likely wouldn’t be willing to leave bigger guaranteed money for a MiLB deal which pays him less and could leave him back riding the buses.

true, except

some people don’t want to have to live halfway around the world.

Do teams look into Japenese stats much?

I was thinking he should go to fix his approach and then show it in the minors over here.

Japan, or even Colorado or Texas. Some place where hitting’s easier and he can get some confidence back.

It won't matter if he goes to Colorado or Texas if he can't connect with the ball.

Altitude

Less break on breaking balls in the altitude of Colorado? Colorado would be his only shot in the MLB. Minor league deal with Colorado Springs… cup of coffee in Colorado in September.

by Colorado Fan on Mar 24, 2026 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Doubtful

But he wouldn’t have a position in Colorado anyways.

One more chance

Given that it is only a matter of time before Izturis gets injured and that Callaspo is unlikely to return to his ‘09 form, I’d keep Wood around and try to get him into the mix as much as possible, both to give him a chance to develop but also to spell Izturis. If he does well enough (say, a .750 OPS) I’d platoon him with Aybar and Izturis and trade Callaspo.

Best-case scenario for the Angels is that Wood breaks out with a .750+ OPS allowing Izturis to return to the role that suits him best: super-sub.

Now if I were Brandon, I’d play wait-and-see for one more year and try to make it happen in the majors. The Angels won’t give him another chance if he doesn’t hit within the first month or two, so if it doesn’t work out I’d hope for a contract from someone else and if not, or if only offered a minor league deal, I’d go to Japan.

by Angelsjunky7 on Mar 23, 2026 2:24 PM EDT reply actions

He's showing a bit of life

Through March 22 he’s hitting .250/.304/.538 with 3 HR in 55 PA - not bad, considering. If he can hit .250/.310/.470 in the regular season, he’s got some value.

by Angelsjunky7 on Mar 23, 2026 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

You have to remember that he's probably getting a lot of these hits off guys

who are the same guys he’s destroyed in the minor leagues for his career. We already know he can hit bad pitching.

by 200tang on Mar 23, 2026 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Not quite true

Last year when he went down to the AAA launching pad of Salt Lake he was just as bad as he was in the majors. This leads me to think that his absolute suckitude last year was largely mental and/or mechanical, and not simply a matter of sucking outright.

So yeah - I don’t expect him to slug .538 in the majors this year, but at least he’s doing something, thus “a bit of life.”

by Angelsjunky7 on Mar 24, 2026 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

If he wanted to come for the AAA affiliate of my favorite team on a minor league deal, I'd like it.

I mean, minor league rosters need depth afterall and he provides more interest than most minor league free agents. But as far as his major league future, I have my doubts he can even be a regular backup.

In 479 career plate appearances, he’s walked 13 times and struck out 145 times. He’s never shown even a flash of the prospect he was. Most busts seem to at least be good for a month or so and make you believe there is still something there. But this was the worst full-time player in 2010. Career .169/./198/.260. With numbers like that at least he’ll never be forgotten.

by Kenneth Arthur on Mar 23, 2026 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

Wood

I never liked this kid when everyone seemed to label him a top prospect, the glaring holes in his swing and plate discipline seemed so obvious then. But this isn’t about me being right so far, it’s about the fact that he has only been up to bat 479 times, in the majors, in his career. Yet everyone writes him off when the kid has never even had a chance to really adjust or get comfortable with major league hitting. Add to that everyone telling him how to hit the last few years and it’s easy to see how things can get messed up (similar to Andrew Miller and mechanics).

I don’t think he should get another chance, cause I don’t think he has really been given a chance to date. Yes he has been really bad in his short stints, but a power bat when people tell him to hit differently and gets sporadic ab’s… well it’s hard for me to imagine doing all that well. To me this is about as text book on giving up on a prospect too early as their is. I’m sure I’ll get flack for this saying how bad he has been, but the thing is I know… I’ve watched him and seen him look clueless many of times, but even when i didn’t like him I still thought he would go on to hit .250 and 20hr, which i still think he a very good chance.

This said, he definitely needs to end up on another team. The Marlins are currently looking for a 3B…

by RedHopeful on Mar 24, 2026 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

My team...

the Pirates would probably take him happily. We have guys like Andy Marte, Josh Fields, and Steve Pearce that have actual shots at making the roster. Brandon Wood would be an improvement over any of these guys. Pittsburgh also has a manager who could do be of major help to Wood’s swing. Clint Hurdle has a better chance than most guys at finding a solution to his woes. If he is able to play RF or SS he might even have a chance at starting. He would be under very little pressure and I could actually see him becoming a star. General manager Neal Huntington has also developed a reputation since his arrival in Pittsburgh of aquiring former top prospects thatt haven’t really worked out with their current teams. Lastings Milledge, Andy Marte, Hayden Penn, Andrew Lambo, James McDonald, Andy LaRoche, Bryan Morris, Jose Tabata, Ross Ohlendorf, Brandon Jones, Tim Alderson, and Ronny Cedeno are all guys who had fallen a significant distance from their best when they were aquired. Talented players who have struggled are given a chance with the Pirates. If they were to strike oil with one or two, the organization could rise to far greater heights. I like NH’s way of thinking. Brandon Wood would be a perfect fit for Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh would be a perfect fit for Brrandon Wood.

So...

do you agree with the rest too? or are you saying the Pirates suck(which needs no pointing out)?

ETHAN MARTIN!!!!

by joegonzo on Mar 23, 2026 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Bits and pieces, but mostly the last sentence. He and the Pirates are a perfect match and the reason I say that is probably the most obvious reason you could think of.

I mean, I understand the desire. One out of every 100 former prospects given another chance becomes Nelson Cruz, Carlos Pena, or Jose Bautista… but 99 of them don’t. I do disagree that he’s a definite upgrade over any of those 3 guys and yes I realize how bad those 3 guys are.

It’s only <500 PA’s, I know, but Brandon Wood has put up one of the worst ~500 PA lines ever. EVER. He is turrible.

by Kenneth Arthur on Mar 23, 2026 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not a fan of Wood, but our bench options are hardly better, so I wouldn’t complain.

Josh Rodriguez is the only bench guy that looks decent, and his scouting reports aren’t good. Andy Marte looks overweight.

can he still play short passably?

if so, i’d love for the royals to pick him up and use him as a utility guy

Yes

And no, there is no spot for him with the Rays.

Even on a Milb deal, he would be behind multiple players….. in the minor leagues.

If I could do anything with Brandon Wood..

I’d make him fucking buy me lunch for 5 years wasted thinking he would finally break out in fantasy baseball.

by The_Beard on Mar 23, 2026 10:11 PM EDT reply actions

yeah...

I traded Freddie Freeman for Wood about two years ago, figuring Wood was a surer bet and could have more value as a potential SS-3B. 1B spects really have to mash.

Bad move.

I'm omnipotent eh

First I’d grant Brandon Wood super human plate discipline skills along with special slider/curveball detecting sunglasses that turn into goggles at night so he doesn’t look like a douche. Then I’d fire hatcher so he stops “fixing” Brandon’s swing into a slap hitting, go-the-other-way middle infielder. Grateful for helping him, Brandon would then grant me box seats for the rest of my lifetime at Angel Stadium.

Trade Him to the Diamondbacks...

Trade him to the Diamondbacks so he can outperform Mora and lets see what he can do in the desert air. Wood, Borchering, Allen, Miranda, & Davidson all make from some interesting CI options.

agreed

I love Melvin the person, and player. But Im not sure he should be in an MLB lineup anymore.

by ADLC on Mar 24, 2026 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Id love to see him get a shot with the other LA team

the Dodgers have no 3B option for the future and Woods could easily gain some confidence in hitter’s haven AAA

I don't think confidence is the issue

I think his inability to make contact is.

If he can still play SS

Then the Giants might want to take a look at him. Currently they’re starting the immortal Miguel Tejada who in 158 games in 2009 at SS put up a -11.2 UZR/150 and his backup is Mike Fontenot, a second baseman by trade who put up concerning UZR numbers last year posting a - in only 49 games. In Fontenot’s defense though he did put up very good UZR/150 numbers from 2007-09 at 5.6, 17.2, and 9.8. You could chalk up 2010 to SSS and the uncertainties of UZR.

The lack of depth the Giants have at SS really makes anyone worth a risk but Wood could be had cheaply and would make an interesting option.

Midnight, behind the box. I'll be the Hyena . . . you'll see.
