A healthy Viz would be a strong candidate for the Top 20 pitchers and possibly Top 10….even Top 5 if all goes REALLY well.

Drabek because I think his stuff is a little better and upside are a bit higher.
That said, I like Owens a lot and I think he is underrated. People sometimes dismiss him as a finesse type but that’s not really accurate.

yordy
Positives are power potential and throwing arm….negative is age, he was old for a high school kid, and there are mixed reports about his plate discipline and level of polish at the plate. Position will be either third base or right field. Ceiling would be 30-homer power with a decent batting average and OBP. Floor would be someone who fizzles out in Double-A if he can’t control the strike zone. Let’s see how he looks three months from now with some pro data.

Manny Machado
You go to such great lengths in most cases to temper expectations for kids in rookie ball. Why are you so smitten with Machado? His professional track record essentially nil.
Does this mean you believe Machado is a once-in-a-generation talent at SS?

Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances, and Andrew Brackman
Heading into ST, the consensus seemed to be that Brackman could probably contribute to the Yankees now, but Banuelos and Betances needed further seasoning. Now, Keith Law said that Banuelos could start the season with the Yankees and perform well, and I’ve read rumblings saying the same about Betances.
Who do you think is most ready to contribute? And, if possible, how do you feel about all three pitching this season?
Thanks John!

Well personally I’d prefer it if all of these guys got more minor league time, but I’m very conservative about promoting prospects quickly. I felt Betances was the most advanced pre-spring, but Banuelos looks terrific from everything I’ve heard and he sure looked good to me in the Arizona Fall League.
I would put Betances and Banuelos ahead of Brackman at this point.

not a prospect, but totally an unestablished player—- looks like sometimes he has needed a consolidation year with some struggles before succeeding at a level. some people say his swing has a huge flaw, or is it just approach? do you see him turning something of a corner in KC or will the struggles continue?

I think he will hit about the same this year as he did last year. The key will be if his glove stays good enough for him to play despite the weak bat, which gives him time to make some adjustments and eventually hit OK. I’m thinking of guys like Ozzie Smith and Omar Vizquel, who couldn’t hit early in their careers but played because of their glove, but eventually had some good years with the bat too.

He seems like, statistaclly anyway, that he is having a pretty decent spring for the Cubs. What have you heard/seen that might signify that he is putting it together to the point where this is the summer he begins to live up to the high draft pick and become the top 3B prospect that the Cubs have been waiting for?

I havent’ heard anything specific this spring about Vitters in terms of altering his swing, although I may have missed something. That’s kind of a vague question…not sure how to answer it. Right now we are at the part of the spring when everyone is in a good mood and optimistic and people aren’t picking apart player’s weaknessess too throughly yet, plus teams are trying to “spin” their prospects to some extent, talking up how good they are. This is a way to boost morale of the player as well as cheer the fans, influence other teams, etc.

I gave him a C+ in the book, rating him as a possilbe fourth outfielder albeit a good one, due to a broad range of skills…speed, OBP, some power. Let’s see….he’s hitting .522 with two homers so far. I don’t think that changes my opinion in any negative way, LOL…but I’m not going to change my view based on 23 at-bats, either.

Well everything I hear about this guy’s glove is excellent…the bat, not so much. He’s athletic and looks like he can hit, and maybe since he’s Cuban his development curve will be unusual. But from what he did last year I don’t see any reason to be especially optimistic.
I can see him becoming a guy who can hit an empty .270 with a low OBP.

I keep hearing that his hype and his power are historic, but just how good of a #1 overall prospect is he? Is he a once-in-a-genaration A-Rod/Griffey/Pujols type of player, or is he more likely a Stanton/Dunn/Tettleton useful slugger (And I understand how wicked cool hitting Dunn’s highs would be for an 18 year old)?

Will Harper be able to play 155+ games consistently with a .380/.520 like Dunn’s been able to do for most of the 00’s?
Of all active players under 32 (so Dunn’s contemporaries whose peaks have been in the mid to late 00’s, and Dunn’s currently 30) he’s T-4 in Offensive WAR behind Pujols, Wright, Mauer, and tied with Utley.
That’s quite the penthouse floor you’ve set up for Harper there.

ZIPS projects Dunn to end up with over 500 HRs for his career. There are too many things that can go wrong with a player for that to be an 18-year-old’s FLOOR imo.

I don’t think John would argue. Obviously, he could get into a car wreck tomorrow. Just a different usage of the word “floor.” In other words, I think John’s definition of “floor” is predicated on the pure basis of his current abilities and likely future path.

When discussing floor, i think we are talking about rate stats, peak years etc…. i dont think anyone would be as bold to say that harper will consistently be as healthy as dunn
reciting career stats doesnt change that harper’s most likely outcome is at the very least a .250-.260 40 HR type… and certainly has the ability to reach 500 hrs if he breaks into the league before he is 21 (pretty likely) and stays relatively healthy

I was JUST about to post something on Michael Choice before yours came up. Personally I’m encouraged by what he’s been showing in ST, since he hasn’t been swinging for the fences and has a solid 3/3 K/BB in 17 ABs, a tiny but noteworthy sample size since the biggest knock on him is that his loud mechanics would give him an unsustainably high K rate against major league pitching.

Eh….I think he’s a natural .280 hitter. He hit .311 last year, so if he hits .250 this year it will balance out, and that’s what I think will happen….he’ll hit around .250 although perhaps with more isolated power.

wow I don't see this at all
but I respect the Opinion
Maybe when he is 30-32 or older he’ll have seasons where he hits .250
but by all acounts, Valencia is in a zone right now
I think he bats .285 this year with a smidge more ISO

Wil Myers
He is often ranked right alongside Hosmer and Moustakas, but most scouting reports I have seen project him for only average to plus-average power and cite his sky-high BABIP in 2010.
What do you think he is capable of producing offensively, and how does it compare to Hosmer/Moose?

Somewhat OT - BABIP v. BA
I’ve thought about this too, and with several other players (Billy Hamilton’s 2010 season comes to mind). I think sometimes we shouldn’t necessarily judge future performance based on BABIP early in one’s career, but maybe some kind of factor that looks at BABIP vs. BA.
Consider this, from 1983-89 (his peak), Wade Boggs had BABIPs ranging from .340 to .396, and his corresponding BAs varied from .330 to .368. On average, his BABIP varied from his BA by +.015 points. That’s not a large deviation by any means. Myers, on the other hand, had his BABIP vary by about + 0.058 points over BA. The real question is, will his BA pick up to levels that minimize the difference between BA & BABIP (as Boggs accomplished) or will he always maintain a 55-60 point swing between BA & BABIP (if it’s the latter, he might be in trouble).
In general, BABIP for an ‘average’ year is right around .300, +/- .020 over a career. There are some hitters that just historically post high BABIP values but it’s hard to know early on who those players will be.
BTW, I’m not trying to compare Myers directly to Boggs; the latter is just a great example of someone who can maintain well-above-average BABIP levels, whereas even above-average players typically cannot, over extended periods…FYI, Tony Gwynn’s difference between BA & BABIP over the same era was less than 10 points!
by dbreer23 on Mar 14, 2026 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions
BABIP may be luck-related but a player with certain attributes can be expected to have a higher BABIP, which is what xBABIP is for.
Ichiro can be expected to have a higher BABIP because he turns groundouts into singles with his speed.

myers and BABIP
Good stuff here, good discussion.
I think Myers is legitimate. He hit the hell out of the ball at Burlington and Wilmington, two strong pitchers parks in pitchers leagues. He didn’t lose his plate discipline moving up. Those environments helped mess up Hosmer and Moustakas until last year, but Myers wasn’t effected.
I think he is totally for real. I also think that while BABIP is a good tool for analysis, it is just one tool among many. If Myers was hitting for an empty average it would be one thing, but he hit for power and drew walks too. He’s real.
by John Sickels on Mar 14, 2026 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Lots of people assume too much luck in HITTER'S BABIP in general...
especially in the minor leagues, where marked deviations may represent real dominance of a level.
BABIP for hitters in MLB, as everywhere, is a real skill subject to a high degree of random variance.
In baseball in general - that is, not limiting ourselves to MLB - BABIP is a skill for pitchers, too. One reason MLB pitchers are MLB pitchers is because they suppress BABIP in such a way that when facing the broad array of MLB hitting talent they will, over the long run, post a BABIP in the well-known normal, can’t-beat-it-over-the-long-term-in-MLB range of .290-.300.

But I think Cashman is actually kind of underrated. He has had to deal with multiple generations of Steinbrenners, which would be probably enough to make any normal GM go insane. People always discount the Yankees for all the money they have, but they have also pulled of some downright great trades. Granted, the Kennedy/Jackson/Coke for Granderson trade looks bad now, and the Igawa signing, but they also didn’t trade their top prospects for Johan, and that’s gotta be worth something.

Well in the book I gave him a C+ but wrote that he was a “late bloomer to watch closely.” I could raise that to B- but it is hard to give a higher grade to a position player who is 26 years old.
by John Sickels on Mar 14, 2026 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Thanks John
I get caught up in the meta questions at times, so I’m intrigued by guys like Chirinos who, because they are 26 and late bloomers for whatever reason (in his case, position change coinciding w/ suddenly discovered hitting capabilities), don’t slot very well on something like a grade system.
As a sim GM, and if I were a real GM, I’d almost have to go to B+ level guys before I start having second thoughts about who I would trade for Chirinos. I mean, I would trade basically any B- or B level prospect, because he’s ready now, and he’s at his prime, and he could have a real nice 5 year run as an above-average starter. Geo Soto w/ more defense and walks, basically, is my opinion.
But he’s 26, so he can’t be ‘rewarded’ w/ high grades or high rankings in BA or BP’s lists, but in real life (or in sim), I’d SO trade Dee Gordon or Jordan Lyles or whomever (at that B/B+ level) for six years of Chirinos.
Anyway, thanks again for the reply.

Sorry, just noticed that there was an earlier similar Chisenahll question. How about a comp and average year (homers and BA) for Jason Kipnis? Thanks!

Well there was an Ackley/Todd Walker comparison yesterday. I actually think the Kipnis/Walker comparison works better…..or split the difference between Walker and Dustin Pedroia and you have Kipnis, if that makes sense.

Ted Williams or Barry Bonds?

well...
Well….at his peak Bonds was a better defender and I’d say they are about even with the bat all things considered. I don’t know how you account for the PEDs but Bonds was amazing even before he did that stuff.
Everyone would want me to say Williams since Bonds is so hated, although Williams wasn’t greatly liked in his time by a lot of people either.

I haven’t paid enough attention to their immediate plans for him, I’m sorry. I know there was some early buzz about “wow this guy is even better than we expected” but that’s a couple of weeks old.

As for John Galt, he will be struck by a debilitating illness at age 65 and will have no one to care for him because he and most of the other people living at Galt’s Gulch are insufferable pricks.
Or else he’ll have a child born with serious disabilities, which will end up bankrupting Galt as he tries to find a cure to no avail. There isn’t health insurance or government aid for people with disabilities in Galt’s Gulch of course.

I expect very good performance at the Low-A and High-A levels (assuming he starts in Low-A, he may start in High-A) with a chance to see Double-A in the second half. I think he’s a significant sleeper.

Well, if he REALLY maxes out and develops a strong secondary arsenal to go with his fastball and athleticism, he could be a number two starter.
Comp….hmmm….Josh Beckett perhaps if he picks up another inch of height and a bit more weight. I could see him putting up similar numbers.

OT: Virus/Malware Issue
John, I am still getting attacked by malware upon visiting minorleagueball.com!
I really love your site, but today marks the 4th time in the last couple weeks I have gotten nailed, and it cost me $89 bucks from McAfee to remotely access my cpu and clean it the first time—I later found out it could have been done for free, but it is my work cpu and major projects were due and I am no IT specialist…
Maybe it is just me having the issues again, if you would like your IT people to get a hold of me, I can be reached at saint-steven@hotmail.com
I hope this can get resolved because I would really miss this site! —Steve

It seems to be a SB Nation wide problem.
I’ve gotten that message here, and on the Royals, Chiefs, Saber, and NFL Draft pages as well as a couple of other team pages.
It seems to be a problem almost entirely exclusive to Internet Explorer as I do not get it in Firefox or Chrome.
I suggest that till they get it figured out that you simply switch to one of those browsers.

Well some people seemed oddly down on Brett Lawrie pre-spring training. I’m not sure why…maybe it is the “red ass makeup” thing although there are other players with similar personalities who don’t seem to get downgraded for it. He did decently in Double-A last year despite having skipped High-A, he is more athletic than given credit for, and I still buy into the bat.
I think I’m higher on Derek Norris than a lot of people. I think his glove is underrated.

Post hype sleepers
Some post-hype former Mets prospects, OF Lastings Milledge and SP Phil Humber, are getting some chatter in White Sox camp. Both could make the team, Milledge as a fourth OF and Humber as a Peavy fill-in and possibly last bullpen arm. Has either one shown anything the last few seasons that would make you think they could eventually become a decent contributor (i.e. Milledge starting in the OF or Humber making it in the rotation)?
by polodude017 on Mar 14, 2026 2:45 PM EDT reply actions
both
Actually i could see both of them doing pretty well. I mentioned Humber in the Rice piece last week as still capable of doing something interesting, likely as a fifth starter.
Lastings, boy I don’t know what to make of him. He could go on a three-month tear and then get hurt or suck or both.

Well I always worried that he was a bit overrated anyway, although I bought into the idea that he could be a decent regular. Way too soon to give up on a guy after less than 200 at-bats. Still think he can be decent, not a star.

Prospect Pitchers
Hi John … really appreciate you taking all these questions. I want to know how you would rate the following pitching prospects by ceiling and likelihood to reach that ceiling:
Jarred Cosart/Brody Colvin/Alex Torres/Chris Dwyer/Drake Britton/Alex White.
by Traindogger on Mar 14, 2026 2:47 PM EDT reply actions
hmmm
Well all of thsoe guys have a potentially high ceiling. I guess I’d go something like
Cosart, Colvin, White, Dwyer, Britton, Torres in terms of ceiling.
In terms of safety/likelihood, I’d say….White, Torres, Britton, Dwyer, Colvin, Cosart. But it is all very close and if you aks me tomorrow you’d probalby get a different answer.

How good do you think Hellickson can be?
Can be a legit ace? Any comparables for him?
by jarjets89 on Mar 14, 2026 2:52 PM EDT reply actions
I am not John by any means, but I do believe Hellickson can be an ace.
I have seen him pitch in the minors and watch every start he has made in the majors. The reports are true: above average (barely) fastball, plus-plus changeup, and average to above average curve. His command is severely underrated though. It isn’t good, it is plus-plus. His ability to hit his spots is so good. On top of that, he fools hitters by throwing pitches you normally wouldn’t expect. I remember seeing him throw three straight changeups to one batter for three straight swings and misses.
He doesn’t have great stuff, but I don’t see why he can’t be an ace. He carved up MLB hitters in his first 4 starts. He did struggle in relief though.
by mr. maniac on Mar 14, 2026 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes. Hellickson can be a genuine ace. I think even now that people are underrating him. He is fully capable of pitching like Greinke did in 2009.

by billybeingbilly on Mar 15, 2026 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions
while obviously not as good
I think of Hellickson as a right handed version of Cliff Lee. His stuff from a pure stuff stand point doesn’t appear to be amazing or the best in baseball it is really good, however he just pounds the zone and is almost always ahead of the count. He keeps pitch counts low despite having high strikeout rates because he rarely gets into 3 ball counts and often if he a ball is put into play it is early in the count because he retires many hitters on K’s once they get to 2 strikes. Because of the change up he also can get both righties and lefties out and is only real weakness is giving up homeruns but many of his homeruns (like the one today) are solo shots.
