astros sophomores
maybe a piece on the rookie year struggles of jason castro and brett wallace and their outlook for their sophomore season
by drewlev on Feb 6, 2026 1:04 PM EST reply actions
similar to that
how will jason heyward do next year?
Other ideas:
guys you think will regress/progress from their rookie seasons. AKA, break out sophomores and deflating sophomores
And top prospects you think will bust. I’m always curious how predictable these things are.

Derek Holland / Carlos Carrasco Crystal Balls
Love to see some predictions on these two guys because I have no idea in my head how they will turn out but they both look like they have potential coming into this year.

i guess i'm too young to remember the prospect hype
but i was pretty pleased with his 110 walks in the 2 hole last year. if only the a’s had a 3-4-5…

Peak #28 on BA
Which doesn’t seem like a lot of hype. I don’t think he did too bad for himself. His power hasn’t developed but he’s patient and a good defender. Not sure he can sustain that walk rate but I’m not sure what KBR is so up in arms about. But, I don’t spend that much time here, and maybe everyone is constantly fawning over Daric Barton.

Historic Analyses
If you are still feeling like doing historical prospect features; I would love to see Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Zambrano, or Aramis Ramirez. I’ve really enjoyed the recent historical pieces, thanks for the good work! I would also enjoy some features on the international free agent process, like comparing the production of various countries or of various MLB team’s systems, like the Dominican Academies. The other area of interest I would have is a comparison of the development of RHP vs LHP, looking at bust rate of each type, and the development time required on average. Thanks again for all the enjoyable reads.

Gut feeling guys
I’d like to see a piece about guys you had strong feelings about one way or another that sort of went against the grain. Guys you pegged that others weren’t so big on, and guys you liked more than some that busted.

Not a Rook:
Andrew Cashner
Very mixed opinions on this guy- I know you feel he may be better suited for the pen, but recently Callis and Klaw both stated he has #2 type stuff [ceiling] and Callis even suggested there was an outside possibility of ace level with him. It appears the Cubs are giving him a look for the #5spot in ST. Would like to learn a little more about Str8$.

Interesting
To me that Iglesias and Hechevarria share roughly, a thousand similarities - righty, Cuban, Ss’s, with slick gloves, who have concerns about thier bats- and Iglesias gets talked about roughly a thousand times more often than Hech. I guess not being in the Red Sox orginization is a pretty big factor eh?

by hrv2010 on Feb 6, 2026 11:11 PM EST up reply actions
Similarity?
I usually don’t like smackdowns when the players have very similar skill sets. In this one the two players probably won’t play the same positions so this isn’t a great example, but I’d like to see a smackdown between two players at the same position who excel in different areas.
by Nathan Holmes on Feb 7, 2026 9:50 AM EST up reply actions
Sure
They don’t always have to be that similar, but they do need to play the same position for it to really work well. Sano and Iglesias didn’t make any sense to me.

How about something a little different, that maybe digs deeper? What about an article where you list and analyze your top 5 “4th OF” guys. Guys that maybe have limited upside, or could surprise. I’m thinking the David Lough, Collin Cowgill type players. If you could pick 5 guys to exceed the 4th OF profile, who would they be?

White Sox Sustainability
I don’t know if this sort of thing is your cup of tea, but how a team like the White Sox who continually dwells in the cellar of team prospect rankings can be as moderately successful as they have been under the Kenny Williams regime. They seem doomed for a huge drop off every year, but it never seems to stick.

Mike Stanton Crystal Ball
I’d love to see a crystal ball on Mike Stanton, because I know the power is there, but I’m interested to see if you think his avg/obp stats will improve to make him a truly elite player.
by swilliam on Feb 7, 2026 12:51 AM EST reply actions
Lol
You’d have to do that one yourself. John’s crystal ball’s don’t tell you what he “thinks” about a player. He doesn’t use them like that, that I know of. He has done a Mike Stanton CB too, by the way. I think.

Minor League Prospects
How about putting together a top 100 minor league list of players that have lost their “rookie” eligiblility yet considered the best in the minor leagues. Obviously this would be a non-prospect list.

Interesting. Would you blend the players with MLB experience together with the ones without to make a new list or, just a list of players like say, Micheal Saunders?
I’ve always felt like players like Saunders, Bumgarner, Mike Stanton etc become even more interesting - as prospects - with some major league data to look at. To me that fact that we here, as a group, don’t really want to discuss them has always seemed the height of the pie in the sky - shiny new toy syndrome - sort of, immature outlook on baseball prospects. We don’t wan’t to discuss them almost at the exact moment hey become interesting- at the cusp of thier baseball dreams and doing exactly what we are talking about when they are toiling in he minors- performing in the show!

50 sounds better. I’d like to see some guys that we don’t find on the top prospect lists that we consider on the cusp of the major leagues, or perhaps they have been up and down several times but just can’t get that break because they are blocked by a superstar or just brought up slowly by the franchise. A guy that comes to mind is (I don’t know if he would be up for consideration) Chris Davis for the Rangers. Still 24 years old, many chances in MLB, yet could strive on a different team.

Top 50 prospects over the past 10 years
This might take some work but if you ranked the 50 or so top prospects (the number doesn’t really matter) of the past 10 years regardless of how they did in the majors. I guess you’d also have to give a year for the player like the pre-2006 Brandon Wood, but however it would work out I think it would be pretty cool.
by Nathan Holmes on Feb 7, 2026 9:56 AM EST reply actions
I know I missed the suggestion period, but . . .
I would LOVE to see some write-ups (similar to your comments in the book) with adjusted grades for some 2010 top 50 prospects who graduated (e.g., Heyward, Posey, Stanton, Santana, Alvarez, Smoak, Morrison, Escobar, S.Castro, I.Davis, A.Jackson, J.Bell, Kalish, Tabata) and the same for pitchers possibly too. Of course, I am not requesting them all, but a handful would be a fun read.
