Amarista

Amarista is no longer a rookie - he spent too many days on the active roster, even if he doesn’t yet have the PA.

Otherwise looks good.

rookies

I don’t go by days on the active roster. I just use at-bats/plate appearances.

No Matt Long?

Curious why he didn’t make the list.

Long

GOOD catch. He should be on there.

Who's the Trout kid?

Go ahead & cut him.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

Jean Carlos Santiago

Pitching extremely well in the Dominican Summer League last we heard. Hard to ignor the kid. Seems easily a better prospect than a couple of these guys.

JCS

Age 20 in the DSL. Plus I have no information about him other than the numbers at this point.

Chris Scholl and

Michale Kohn…

cut

I think I’ll cut Bolden, who has been unspeakably bad in rookie ball, in favor of Scholl, who could help in the majors soon

Bolden and Clarke...

…are great examples of why drafting the toolsy player isn’t always a good idea. Both are 20 next year and too young to give up on completely, but I would have liked to see SOMETHING by now.

Drafting toolsy guys

Is how you wind up with Mike Trout. To a large extent, all of those guys are lottery tickets, so the misses are simply the price of doing business.

"Please explain."

OK, so we both know Bryce Harper gets an 80 score on power and arm, which is the highest score one can achieve on the scout scale. There are still some old-timers who use the 1-10 scale, but not many, for for giggles we’ll stick with the 20-80, or 2-8.

Those are definite tools. They are baseball related skills which a player possesses and in which there is little room, or in Harper’s case, no room for improvement.

When a scout grades a player, he gets two scores, his current rating and what he believes is his peak, or what he would be as a major league regular.

So, for example, Harper is an 80 now, in five years, he’s going to remain an 80, or possibly drop to a 70 or 75. (Half scores are possible, depending on the organization).

Harper’s other skills right now are in the four to five range, hitting, fielding, and running.

(Five is major league average).

In these categories, he’s considered “toolsy”

What this means is the skills are there, they’re just inconsistent. He flashes them sometimes, mostly not in game situations.

Harper’s learning the outfield, which is new to him, but as a good athlete the likelihood of him improving are pretty good, so a scout would write “toolsy defensive skills” on his report, which lets his team know the skill is there.

Another example is when teams sign sixteen or seventeen year old International free agents.

They are physically immature and don’t play against top competition, but they show the potential to develop their skills under the right supervision and program.

Sometimes tools develop and you have a solid major leaguer like Adrian Beltre, sometimes they don’t, and you end up with a stiff like Jesus Montero.

Can cut....

Romine and Hall, AFAIC.

Brad Mills is one to consider adding. They just picked him up from Toronto. Highly regarded in the past, is getting to be old for a prospect, but had a decent year at a rough park for pitchers (Las Vegas) w a good K rate. Maybe was promoted too fast after a great 2008. Maybe would be very good in the pen in MLB, which would seem to be his destiny w the Angels.

I've heard great things about Juan Carlin

I didn’t get to see him this summer, but Tom Kotchman really extolled his virtues. Formerly an outfielder for South Florida University, now a pitcher in the Angels’ system with lots of arm strength from the left side. He could have a very interesting career arc.
