We are planning another cycle of upgrades for Minor League Ball. You can help me plan this by answering two questions for me.

1) What do you like best about Minor League Ball right now?
2) What improvements or changes would you like to see in the future?

1) I have always been a minor league fan and this was the first website I found that talks about the minor leagues in depth. I have learned so much from this site.
2) Not a lot. Maybe a few more writers on days you cannot write, but that’s it.

I'll second Marisa's point

More original content would be nice (from other writers, obviously your very busy). Though, since this is a free site, that may not be easy.

Thoughts

1. I love the original content. I appreciate your knowledge on prospects and your open communication with the community
2. I don’t like the attitude of some of the posters who just like to take smarmy attacks on people while never contributing anything of their own. These people tend to attack the poster instead of the poster’s comment.

sometimes I think posters are more interested in self promotion than sharing ideas.

What I love about this site is your generosity of giving out information that could easily be charged for. Your ongoing updates of what’s in the book are incredible and no one else in the industry does this to the extent you do.

I am comfortable with what you can do in posting now, and would not necessarily read other writers offerings. I come to this site because John Sickles is one of (if not the best ) minor league analyst in the business, that doesn’t mean anyone else who writes is as good and usually they are not, that’s just reality. For instance scouting and projecting performance is more than number crunching, any writer better be seeing live performances and have a base line understanding of both sabermetrics and traditional scouting. Your perspective is unique for me and rises above the typical internet blather.

I use the Archive feature constantly

It’d be great if the TAG section was more relevant or easier to use/find. Maybe have a team news page where all their prospect info can be found after only 1 or 2 clicks.

Here are some ideas for you John

1. Come on Rangers Fan Radio again soon!

2. Tag each article with the team/teams represented, and have a list of teams on the column on the side of the page so that I can just go click Texas Rangers and see every article from this site that is about the Texas Rangers.

3. Weekly prospect updates: Like pick a top bat/arm from each league and highlight them here… Or maybe take your top 25 list, update it weekly including weekly stats and what not.

4. Feature writer (pick me) with some profiles on certain prospects!

Thats all I got for now.

Mostly awesome... some ideas for improvement

Good stuff:
1. The top 20 rankings is my favorite part of this site. I look forward to those like a birthday present when a new one is available! I also appreciate it when you revisit those lists later in the year.
2. The contributions from posters. I get quite a bit of information from them, that you yourself probably don’t have time to really get into. For example, I would never have realized just how big a jump Rubby De La Rosa took as far as being a top prospect without the legions of positive comments about him.
3. The AQA threads are extremely helpful.

Improvements:
1. The most important improvement would be to get your input on whether a prospect’s possible improvement or tanking is for real. For example, when Devin Mesoraco was going all gangbusters at the beginning of the year, if we could have gotten some opinion from you on whether it was for real, that would have been very helpful. Same with Jerry Sands, Brandon Belt (and Rubby too, of course). Same with Jaff Decker having a slow start, etc. The key is getting your opinion earlier when the prospect change is in question at that time, rather than after the fact. Of course, it’s hard to know when that “timely” moment is…
2. In those top 20 lists revisited, it would be helpful to include some prospects that came out of the blue and are now relevant. You just ignore them as if they didn’t exist. (Again, Rubby is a good example of this). A quick comment on those guys would be helpful, including why they took such a big leap (if the reason is known).

Of course, overall, I LOVE this site and check it nearly every day (and usually multiple times a day). Thank you for all you do on it.

by bardin on Nov 17, 2025 1:48 PM EST reply actions

I like this

The revisiting is awesome. The top prospect list even better. And yes, please add sleepers and guys that came out of no where!

I know it takes a lot of time and research for the AQA but you got more traffic on those in 6 hours than most of your other articles I would guess. There were a few times I missed those threads because of whatever reason, and was very disappointed.

Guessing you keep some off line lists

During the season, I am guessing that you keep some lists, such as players that suddenly catch your attention, players not on your top 20 lists but moving into the conversation, pitchers improving their control, prospect status tumbling, prospects stepping up, etc.. It would be great to have some of this lists on the site. It would be conversation starters for those of us not familar with these players. You don’t have to put alot of background to the player on the list, just put him on the list, we can ask you the questions about who they are and why they made the list.

2. Maybe add a FANTASY ADVICE Thread on the RR so everyone talking about their leagues is in one place. I don’t mind reading about other teams leagues, and actually might ask the community here something myself but if they could all be in one centralized location that would keep the clutter down.

Random Player Prospect Retro

I like it a bit more actually when it’s a player who we didn’t know about. It doesn’t need to be some failed prospect or superstar every time. Frankly, most of the community remembers how they developed. That said, review is fun too.

I’d love to see two to four a month if I had to throw out a number. Players from all across the spectrum.

Thoughts

1. This site is great. I love the analysis and accuracy of analysis found here.
2. It would be great if the site was more searchable. For example if I wanted to see everything written about Ackley or Belt. Also, links would be good. If for example someone wanted to see what had previously been written about a particular team’s prospects it would be nice to be able to just click on a link.

Ideas

In category 1:
 - you’re philosophical thinking about prospecting. I always enjoy reading your thoughts on the evolution of prospecting, self-analysis (I wish other writers were as humble), and the big picture stuff.
- your interviews have always been very good, you ask great questions.
- the interaction of the posters here is great. I’ve learned a lot about baseball, prospecting and various prospects from the people here. You’ve fostered and encouraged a good forum.

In Category 2:
- Maybe you could find some fledgling young “prospect” writers to mentor. This would add content to the site and builds on your strengths. I believe you thought of being a history teacher at one time, and I think you’d make a good mentor for baseball writers.
- Links to things you find interesting regarding prospects, scouting reports, etc. from other sites.

My two cents

1) What do you like best about Minor League Ball right now?

Your writing. The AQA threads. The ease of getting personal responses from you when the question is good enough.

2) What improvements or changes would you like to see in the future?

A partner writer would help out: Eno Sarris or another young buck. Just to flesh out when you are sick or Jeri is or whatnot. I mention the guy I did by name simply because that’s the fantasy writer element, too.

Positional top tens. It’s something we can piece together from grades, but these would make for great articles

Fair point

I nearly paused on adding a name at all, but he’s on several sites to begin with.

And I think for fantasy purposes, we’re just looking for dynasty strategies and good names for sleepers in redrafts. Someone like Eno could and does do that. John’s the one travelling around seeing players and calling scouts and watching film. And we love him for that. But someone could help us slug through the more mundane, smaller picture stuff like “Is Derek Norris a better prospect in fantasy than Gary Sanchez” or whatever. Having that separation on the site lets John go to bigger picture, too.

by Johnny Tuttle on Nov 17, 2025 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with this. I think you should try a quick contest like “BP Idol” and ask for people to submit a few pieces of work. Then pick from there. I think it’s worth the work on your end because it’ll put less pressure on you to come up with future ideas down the road.

by Dorn on Nov 17, 2025 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

Ugh

While I liked BP’s idea there, the title is one of many reasons I don’t frequent that site with much regularity anymore. Godawful title. And just another example of how they are trying to go mainstream. Also, a project of that size would shut John down for two weeks. You have to remember that BP had like 15 people reading the submissions and at least a few “call back” articles that the prospective author had to write and then be resubmitted. And then every BP author had to read through them again and vote. Anything that keeps John from writing about prospects I am full heartedly against. And anything with the word “Idol” in it that doesn’t refer to Billy I am also full heartedly against. Just my two lira (or lire depending on your nationality)

by thehitonecafe on Nov 17, 2025 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

Love the site!

and in reality, I really don’t care about anything other than the content. You could put a picture of roadkill as the background and it wouldn’t bother me as long as the writing and the comments stayed the same.
As far as point 2- I know I’m asking alot, and maybe you could find an intern at KU who could do this for grades, but getting an everyday mid-morning to lunchtime update of the prospects daily performances (I know KG does it at bp but you and he have different opinions on who is a prospect) would be awesome! Nothing too ridiculous, just 10-15 guys who are performing good or bad on the previous day. Maybe a Sickels sleeper in there too! Beyond that, great work.

by thehitonecafe on Nov 17, 2025 3:57 PM EST reply actions

Love the site

The one thing I wouldn’t mind seeing more of is a little more about the people who will be in the minors next year, like a little more about the draft. Especially since mlb bonus baby hasnt been updated in months. Dont know if thats possible, it may take another writer I dont know. Thanks.

Enjoy the Site

Would like to see more “Prospect Smackdowns” (I think you do an excellent job on these and generally enjoy the discussion and contributions of the community on these).

Also, if you are looking for ideas, just a thought about incorporating a “Floor” and “Ceiling” type column to your posts including some ‘floor and ceiling’ comparisons for each prospect and the likelihood you think the prospect will develop towards his ceiling, etc.

by BryceHarper on Nov 17, 2025 5:46 PM EST reply actions

Lots to like...

AQA thread’s are awesome; to echo an earlier comment, I really enjoy reading about your philosophy and general baseball/prospect analysis process/evolution; I get lots of value from many of the fanposts - great to read the the thoughts of others, especially their “on hand” observations of prospects in what are far away places to me. The “guess the prospect” thread is also a lot of fun.

I don’t really pay attention to Facebook, where I believe you now have “other” observations/comments, so I miss your Star Trek thoughts & comments unrelated to minor league ball - I’d love for those to come back here…Thanks for asking for the input. John, you(and Jeri) rock!

Response

1) I love having a knowledgeable report on prospects that I don’t get on other sites
2) I wish the site was more saber-oriented. Such as a I see you sometimes list Wins or RBI’s as a meaningful stat, and would rather see wOBA more or xFIP more often. But that’s just me being picky, and I realize you are trying to make it appeal to all groups of fans.

by jackyz on Nov 17, 2025 10:57 PM EST reply actions

I think it is already too saber-oriented

Stats are very important when analyzing prospects but scouting reports are equally important. I would hope that we can use the entire community to get more scouting reports in each league. With people around North America this should be attainable.

by John Sickels on Nov 17, 2025 10:58 PM EST reply actions

First of all, I would like to say that I absolutely love this site.

Great info and many good posters.

The only thing is I would like for it to expand in a way where you could have some of the more educated posters here who attend games give you information. For example, I often find that some propsects will get seen alot by many people wanting to see them, while others will be left out. I find myself going to Port Charlotte to see the GCL Rays and the Stone Crabs. I love seeing the info, and wish that maybe you could give more people permission to highlight things they saw somewhere else, where I can’t be. I can’t hear about Alex Cobb, because no one sees him and makes reports. It would be too difficult for one person to see so many different players.

So overall, I am suggesting that you have a little committee of people from different areas who can view alot of players and be able to post their opinions. Then perhaps you can comment on their reports.

Just pretty much more info on guys during the season.

by mr. maniac on Nov 17, 2025 11:27 PM EST reply actions

My Answers

1) What do you like best about Minor League Ball right now?

At the risk of sounding like a brown nose, it really is the author, John Sickels. More so than just trying to put out your opinion about some prospect, you do listen to the posters here and listen to their opinion. Even to the point that many of the articles/posts are designed to create discussion among the board in which you interact in rather than simply to state your opinion and think that the followers should listen to you over their own opinions (not to say that is the attitude of those sites, but after being here, it does feel that way sometimes). Even though this give and take will inevitably lead to some posters with a sense of entitlement or need for self-aggrandizement, I rather this than the alternatives.

Other than that, I also like the variety of articles/posts. I don’t read every Crystal Ball or Prospect Retro or a post on Ships, but I respect the fact that it is entertaining to many and keeps the creative juices flowing. Obviously, I like the posts detailing new thoughts or notes on prospects, the lists (top 20 and sleepers), and - perhaps especially - the AQA threads and that’s why I keep coming back, but sometimes the variety is exactly what is needed instead of a plethora of names that I might see in MLB one day (since there’s really only 2 MiLB teams close enough to me that I’d attend with any regularity).

2) What improvements or changes would you like to see in the future?

Personally, I’d like a more functional tool bar. Someone had the idea of listing the teams so that every post associated with particular team would come up and that’s a good idea. It would be an easy way for people who are new to the site to catch up fairly quickly with the site for the particular team they follow. Also, when a rumor that my team is involved in trade discussions with another team, then I could have an easy way to get the current rundown of their system for my own personal rosterbation.

Also, I was also thinking that maybe you could include a top x lists as well - maybe top x overall prospects and/or top y prospects at particular positions and slap it on the toolbar as well. There are obvious problems with such an idea, but I do think it’d be fun discussion and would allow for an easier route to your (somewhat current) ideas. It may even become a nice tool when you’re getting a little writer’s block to review what you’re ideas where when you wrote them and decide if you still agree with them or not… and write a post about it.

Lastly, I really enjoy the personal scouting missions and wish there were more of them. Maybe even going a little further afield during the season and seeing teams on either coast. I understand that family matters obviously put a crimp on these, but I do want to put it out there for future thought - maybe even eventually scheduling the family vacations around the trips (nothing like a vacation you can write off!).

1) I love the site for the main content and the community content. I think the diverse community is a huge asset to the site and it features a lot of very knowledgeable people. There’s a whole range of information, some well researched, some not so much, but almost every bit of it is useful if viewed and valued properly.

2) The only problem I’ve had with the site is the search function not working on occasion. It’s not a serious problem, but it happens to me more than I would expect.

1) I love that this site is free. I would have never known the quality of what is done here if it had not been free. So because it was free, it eventually led me to purchasing the book. Also love AQA.

2) Hmm. Im not sure. Maybe more write-ups on players like Travis Snider who are no longer minor league eligible but haven’t quite blossomed in the majors yet.

Best minor league site around

I absolutely love this site - I began visiting more frequently a few years ago to do some research for a 10-round minor league fantasy draft, where I knew next to nothing about the prospects around apart from the MLB team I follow.
I couldn’t have done that draft without this site.
I now visit the site practically every day.
The Top 20s are my favourite articles, and are a great help for minor league draft preparation as well as getting a better idea of what teams are sacrificing or acquiring in trades which involve prospects.
I also like the different types of posts, as the mix of Top 20s, Prospect Retros, Smackdowns and Guess The Player posts keeps the site interesting.
I’d like to see more Guess The Player posts, but otherwise don’t mess too much with a winning formula. Thanks John, keep up the great work.

Top 20's

This is nitpicking because this site is AWESOME, but since you asked:

I agree with the above posters that the top 20 lists are fantastic, and If there was a section to the left or the right on the main page that featured only top 20’s so we didn’t have to use the archive…I also love the previously mention idea of having team tabs with archives that pertain to those teams would be phenomenal as well.

Thank again John, keep up the great work.

Brian Sabean would return more calls if he wasn't so busy being the greatest baseball mind in the history of the game.

Integrating ideas from these fanposts

What if each team got one poster (ie I’ll take the mets) just like the shadow draft. Each poster is responsible throughout the season for getting the prospects from you’re top 20 for each teams stats into a nice package daily and then send them on to you for posting. It could be a daily/ every couple of days type thing that takes writing off of you and gets content up that people are asking for. Also, it costs John no money or time (or very little time). Like i said, I’ll do the mets. Is this something that people would get into? Is this possible?

Hey John

In any typical fantasy league they have the location to get live streaming results as your players have at bats or are pitching. You know what would probably be a big hit. If you could incorporate that into the daily gameday threads. A person could chose a list of players he wants to track, and recieve up dates as the games are going on. And on that same page he is linked with other participants in a chat area, where that days games could be discussed. I bet it would be a big hit.
