I have a lot of things running through my mind about Kirby Puckett right now. I am going to write up an essay about what Kirby meant for me as a Twins fan and as a baseball fan in general. I'll post it when I can.

For today, I'd like to suggest a semi-related topic for discussion.

Is there any equivalent to Kirby Puckett in baseball today? Do we have an "ambassador" for the game? Are there any current minor league prospects who might be able to fill that role eventually? Who is the most locally beloved player on your favorite team? Does this person have a national following? Do they deserve one?

Share your thoughts about why some players seem to transcend what they do on the field and become broader heroes, even if (like Kirby) then are eventually revealed to be flawed human beings like the rest of us.
