Houston Astros
A sleeper call that is NOT working out: infielder Edwin Maysonet. He was a 19th round pick out of Delta State University in 2003. In college and last year in low A-ball, he showed plate discipline, some speed, and good power for an infielder. This year, he's hitting just .234/.267/.331 for Salem in the Carolina League. The big problem is a sharp deterioration in his plate discipline: he's drawn just 5 walks against 36 strikeouts in 124 at-bats. This is compared to 64 walks against 391 at-bats last year in the Sally League. I thought he was a sleeper as a utility man, a guy who could contribute in many ways, but unless he gets the secret of the strike zone back, it is hard to see how this will pan out. He turns 24 this fall, and has to have a good year to stay on the radar.
