Feeling kind of burned out this morning. I have a list of Not a Rookies to do, and I'll be posting a sleeper list from the book tomorrow. Also have radio show tomorrow for Rotowire. I'm trying to pick up more interviews, and we'll do an AQA later this week. But I need more ideas to go with these items, and right now I haven't got any.

A Ball Arms
I asked about it on the last Q&A, but I’d love to see an expanded look at some of the top A Ball arms from this past year, your outlook for them, both for next year and as ML projections.

Over slot signings outside of first 3 rounds
It would be interesting to see the relative success rate of draft picks after a certain round(say after 2nd or 3rd round) who signed for well over slot. Take a look at one draft 5 years back or so. Just an idea

How about creating some all-time minor league teams?
- Best minor league team per year, or per decade (ie, the ones that ended up with the most successful major league players)
- an all-time minor league team of the best prospects per year (regardless of how they actually ended up). Maybe have them play each other in an imaginary tournament.

Professional sabermatricians
I saw where the Indians are advertising for a front-office job specializing in statistical analysis. Some other teams have been outspoken in their affinity for sabermetric research … but those experiments have been a mixed bag.
On one hand, you have Bill James and his reasonably loose affiliation with the Red Sox. That has been a successful deal.
Then you have Paul DePodesta. That didn’t go well.
Examine the professionalization of your trade … and if it’s more of a novelty or an endeavor that will enrich organizations.

Prospect Smackdown - bring it back
Controversial Prospects - Pro and Cons (done with another writer)
Ultimate Upsides - what prospects could become if they fulilled their potential.
Promising Prospects - like a weekly hot sheet.
Bonus Baby Busts - high dollar signees that failed for reasons other than injuries.

Best players 25-and-under
It would be fun to see how you’d grade the best young players in baseball relative to the prospects. How does Wieters compare to Posey and Santana? How does Rasmus compare to Jennings? And so on.
by RM on Feb 22, 2026 6:08 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I'd really like to see something like this
A lot of these young guys are still basically prospects once they’re in the majors, they’re just at a higher level than some of the others. It’d be great to really compare them all to whats still in the minors and also talk about their development thus far. Granted that’s what these “not a rookie” articles are doing but I’d like to see even more of that including as mentioned above rankings.

Something a little different
It sounds like something different might make sense with you feeling some post-book burnout. How about a piece/short series identifying and analyzing a few spring training battles involving multiple prospects and/or former top prospects?
For example, the final three spots in the Nationals rotation are up for grabs with a relatively young group of mostly former prospects: Garrett Mock, Scott Olsen, Craig Stammen, J.D. Martin, Shairon Martis, and Collin Balester.
Chris Tillman, Jason Berken, or David Hernandez for the O’s 5th starter job?
How does the Padres OF situation (Kyle Blanks, Tony Gwynn Jr., Scott Hairston, Will Venable - all under 30) shake out? etc.
I suppose some of these would be a stretch, and the focus on the final roster spots of some typically below-average teams may be a negative for some readers. That said, this seems like a potential avenue for capturing elements of prospect retros and prospect smackdowns from a different perspective (organizational as opposed to individual). This also may be a way to check in on some C+ types or former prospects with some remaining upside - guys who you seem to have more of an appreciation for than some other prospectors.
I could see there being interest in this among readers in deeper fantasy leagues where knowing teams’ depth charts is pretty important to being successful. But it’s just a thought, and I’m not entirely married to this idea or anything.

More OT stuff
Yes I come by for some great minor league discussion, but I miss the Warship pictures and historical figures we are supposed to guess and you drop a pearl of info or two. Cheesecake is always yummy. Also enjoy the interactive stuff where you post a player bio and we are to guess whom you are speaking of. Sometimes a little “side step” invigorates us all to come back and discuss baseball again.
BTW- missed the soda discussion, but Moxie or Vernors ice cold are lovely with a Pirate game on the radio in the summertime.

Stop writing, start promoting.
You just wrote a great book, time to get the word out. A promo tour seems in order. But baring that…
How about a spring scouting special? Take two weeks and scout top prospects in the Grapefruit and Cactus leagues and give us your impressions. Plus, it’s a great excuse to eat some hot dogs, coke and nachos and get away with it.

I can’t afford a spring training trip. I don’t have an expense account or institutional support on such things. It sucks, but that’s the way it is.

Sorely Needed Break
It must take ALOT out of you to produce your amazing book, and I think a solid week or two off to recharge your batteries is in order. Last thing you want to do is purge forward and hit the wall where you completely dread doing what you love to do.
Take a break John, take care of yourself.
If you still wish to write but not about baseball, write movie or music reviews for a few weeks.
Gotta put yer mental health first bro!!
Peace,
Jimmy

Maybe you could do something on the different organizational philosophies
Going team by team. You could take a look at drafts, what drafted players signed, international talent, your top prospects lists from the past few years, and especially with smaller market organizations also the type of talent they would target in trading away vets for prospects. Go into what’s worked, what hasn’t, what changes might be being made in the future, what changes should be made, etc. Probably a fair bit of work, but it’d be an interesting study.

Smackdown: Jon Lester vs Yovanni Gallardo
Would love to see a smackdown between these two. I realize they are no longer minor leaguers or prospects. But they’ve gotten so much love from this community over the recent years, I think they still might be of interest.
Or is a smackdown something the posters instigate?
