Whats the worst injury season for a single team?
With another major Met going down this week, I started wondering what was the worst season of injuries your team has ran across?
As for the Mets in 2009, so far the following have hit the DL from my memory...
Alex Cora, Jose Reyes, Brian Schneider, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Ryan Church (I think), Oliver Perez, John Maine, Billy Wagner, JJ Putz...
Also who would win in a 7 game series, the Mets that have hit the DL this year vs the Mets that havent?

Braves in 2008
I think I can top this, last year’s Braves team was hit really hard with injuries.
-John Smoltz, pitched in only 6 games
-Tom Glavine, pitched in only 13 games
-Tim Hudson missed the final 2 months and needed Tommy John
-Mike Hampton, pitched in only 13 games
-Chuck James, made only 7 starts
-Mike Gonzalez, missed half season with Tommy John
-Raphael Soriano, made only 14 appearances
-Peter Moylan, pitched in 7 games and needed Tommy John
-Yunel Escobar missed about 30 games
-Chipper Jones missed about 35 games
-Matt Diaz, injured in May and out for the year.
-Mark Kotsay, missed all of June
So pretty much, lost all 5 projected starters to start the season, and a good part of the lineup for significant amounts of time.

meh
i agree, that’s a good deal of injuries. But some of those had to be pretty obvious. Smotlz and Glavine were/are effing old, while Hampton is always injured. Gonzo, you knew you were missing him before the season, and chuck james sucks anyway. Of those, Hudson was the only big surprise.

Well
I don’t think you can ever say just because someone is old, that an injury will be obvious. In any case, the 5 that were healthy and projected to be the starting rotation to start the year all went down.

bad projection
you base a rotation on smoltz, glavine, hampton and chuck james then you are asking for trouble. i was legitimately surprised by hudson, although there were warning signs the year before (puzzling drops in velocity for a couple of games).

The Tribe would have to be in the conversation
The SP depth, thought to be a strength when the season began, took a hit with Scott Lewis, Aaron Laffey, Jake Westbrook, Anthony Reyes all going down. The pen lost Betancourt This is not to mention Fausto getting sent to low A and Pavano’s wheels beggining to come off.
Position players also have taken hits: Hafner and his never ending shoulder problems, plus both Cabrera and Sizemore have been out for awhile.
While they number of players on the DL might not be the most in baseball, I think they really have sunk our season. Just my two cents.

Um
Pavano sucking and Fausto being inconsistent aren’t exactly “injuries.”

Right, that’s why I mentioned it as an aside. “This is not to mention….”

Haven't the A's set records for DL stints the past two years?
Each year they’ve used more than 50 players, so they essentially had an AAA team out there. Not good.

my fantasy team...
Reyes, Delgado, Votto, Doumit, Aviles (who cares?), Manny Ramirez (not an injury, but still),
Also, the following who missed a lot of time…
Jose Valverde, Rich Harden, Chris Carpenter (not surprising)
Also could have been worse—I had Halladay, but traded him before he got injured.

lol the A's
have their foot in the door every year on this discussion because of Eric Chavez!

Who expects Chavez to play any more?
He was one of my favorite players but I haven’t expected many ABs or much production for three or four years now.

chavez...plus half of the team
the a’s have had an absurd number of injuries the past few years. for a while there this season (as in just 2 or 3 weeks ago) i remember they started a bottom third of the lineup with a single hitter above .200 (and barely) due to injuries. they’ve put out almost AAA teams out there at times. i think it suggests a real issue in their training staff all the way down the organization.

another vote
For my fantasy team.
Hamilton, Doumit, Ervin Santana, Edwin Encarnacion—four of my top 10 picks (Edwin was 10th, don’t flame me). Another top 10 pick, Chris Davis, I took to be my regular 1B. Maybe flame me for that. Haha.

Hmm
Hamilton, Stephen Drew, Webb, Frankie Francisco, Joakim Soria, Joe Mauer, Kevin Youkilis

yeah
I also have Francisco, and Chad Qualls. And Josh Outman just went on the DL, too.

To be fair
I went in assuming that Francisco would probably miss time and that Soria very well might.
