This morning Baseball America came out with their Top 100 Prospects for 2018 list. Obviously you should go read it if you haven’t already done so.
Here are some of my own initial thoughts.
****I agree with the placement of Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna at Number One. Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays at Two/Three also make sense, although on my own personal list I’m still trying to decide if it should be Guerrero/Ohtani (my current opinion) or Ohtani/Guerrero. What do you think?
****Houston Astros right-hander Forrest Whitley is the top non-Ohtani pitcher at number 10. That makes sense to me.
****What do you think of Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Mitch Keller at number 12? I love Keller but right now I would rank him behind Braves lefty Luiz Gohara, who checks in at 23 on the BA list. Again, what do you think?
****St. Louis Cardinals catcher Carson Kelly checks in at 55. That feels high to me. Washington Nationals top outfield prospect Juan Soto at 56 feels low, although he does have the injury issue and resulting small sample size considerations.
****Jay Groome of the Boston Red Sox is 83 feels high, but that all depends on how you rank physical potential in relation to current polish.
Overall the list seems quite solid to me. As with any other prospect list there are some surprises and placements you could nitpick, but that’s the whole point. That’s what makes it fun.
