Hey guys!
My name is Matt Powers and I’m going to be joining the team here at Minor League Ball. I’ve read the site for years and have even participated in some of the community mock drafts- though mostly under a different user name that I converted to my real name after I started writing on Talking Chop about the Braves minor leaguers and the draft. I’ve also written on a few other sites in the past.
I’ve followed John for years, and even started my own Braves shadow draft/system back in 2010 after getting the idea from him. He, along with seeing my first issue of Baseball America at the 1995 Triple A All Star Game with Derek Jeter, Jason Isringhausen, and Jeromy Burnitz, are what got me so interested in the minors in general at a young age. However I was already familiar with the minors by then as my family attended many Scranton Wilkes-Barre Red Barons games when I was young, and I got to see some of those great early 90s Richmond teams with Chipper Jones, Ryan Klesko, and Javy Lopez leading them.
I like to get to games where there are prospects involved. I live in Scranton, PA and am in driving distance to multiple parks in the International, Eastern, and New York/Penn Leagues, as well as having teams in the Carolina (Wilmington) and Sally (Lakewood) Leagues that are within a drivable distance for a weekend trip. I’d estimate by the end of the year, I’ll have seen a quarter of the Top 100 prospect candidates and will be talking about what I saw with them. I also follow the draft, international signings, and rookie ball as much anyone.
