The top pitching prospect in baseball experiences elbow discomfort

Multiple media outlets are reporting this afternoon that St. Louis Cardinals right-handed pitcher Alex Reyes is experiencing elbow discomfort and has undergone an MRI. There is no official word on the results as yet, but Jeff Passan reports that Tommy John surgery is a possibility.

Reyes ranked as the Number One pitching prospect in baseball on the Minor League Ball Top 200 MLB prospects list released yesterday. Obviously a serious injury (if such is the case) complicates matters. If surgery or a long rehab period is necessary, the ranking will change when the list is updated at the end of spring training.

The most common thing to say here is “TINSTAAPP” but I won’t say that. There is such a thing as a pitching prospect, of course, it’s just that their injury risks are so much different compared to position players that it complicates projecting their future value in comparison to one another.
