Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the Minor League Ball Gameday discussion thread for Friday, September 2nd. Here are some items worthy of attention today.
****Happy Yoan Moncada Day!
****Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Trevor Williams was excellent yesterday for Triple-A Indianapolis, fanning 10 with one walk in 6.1 shutout innings of work against Louisville. He now has a 2.53 ERA in 110 innings on the season, including a 74/30 K/BB ratio. The high strikeout game yesterday stands out because he is generally not an overpowering pitcher; indeed, a weak K/IP mark is the main caution flag in his profile. He throws strikes and picks up his share of ground balls, profiling him as a potential fourth starter, but it will be interesting to see if yesterday's whiff surge was just a fluke or a presage of something more.
****Oakland Athletics shortstop prospect Franklin Barreto was promoted to the Triple-A Nashville Sounds this week. He went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a strikeout yesterday against the Iowa Cubs. Barreto hit .281/.340/.413 for Double-A Midland before his promotion, highly credible numbers for a 20 year old shortstop in the Texas League. He has the tools to match and is soundly within the ranks of elite shortstop prospects, aiming for a trial sometime next year.
****At Beyond the Boxscore, Anthony Rescan looks at the maturation of Colorado Rockies stalwart Nolan Arenado as a hitter.
****Don't forget Carson Cistulli's weekly Fringe Five prospects report at Fangraphs.
