Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the Minor League Ball Gameday discussion thread for Monday, August 22nd.
***The big news today in Minor League Baseball is a round of contraction/expansion: the California League will lose two teams in 2017: the Bakersfield Blaze and the High Desert Mavericks will cease to exist. The Carolina League will gain two franchises: one team will play in Kinston, North Carolina, and will be affiliated with the Texas Rangers. The second club will be located in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Baseball America notes that both the High Desert and Bakersfield franchises have been struggling with stadium issues: the Mavericks have been embroiled in a legal fight with the city while the Blaze have been unsuccessful in securing financing for a new stadium to replace an obsolete ballpark that dates back to the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration.
