Cape Cod League: Top Pitchers Through Week Two

New, 4 comments

Here are how the next crop of college draft prospects are doing in the Cape Cod League! This is the only place you can find ERA- for the Cape Cod League!

Now that we are two weeks into the Cape Cod League schedule, let's take a look at how pitchers are performing so far. You can look at the table below - which is sortable, and includes ERA- (based on league average, with no park adjustments)! You can click on a player's name to reach their Cape Cod page. I limited the list to players with at least 5 IP and a 100 ERA- or lower, or a Component ERA (ERC) equal to or lower than league average.

Before we get to the stats, I wanted to highlight two players of interest.

The first is Falmouth Commodores starting pitcher Jeffrey Passantino, a stocky righty entering his junior season at Lipscomb. He has been an effective strike thrower his first two years in college, with a 3.11 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 8.0 K/9, and 5.6 K/BB over 165 innings. It looks like he is taking a step forward in the Cape this summer, with a 1.00 ERA, 30 ERA-, 0.56 WHIP, and both a 8.5 K/9 and K/BB. He's got clean mechanics and a powerful drive towards home plate. He hides the ball well, adding deception and perceived velocity to his fastball. He will probably be a reliever at the pro level, but that may be due more to biases against short righties than his abilities. He will be a fun follow next year as a junior.

The second is Harwich Mariners starter Patrick "Packy" Naughton, a lefty from Virginia Tech entering his junior season. He was the top-ranked prep lefty from Massachusetts out of high school, according to Perfect Game. He has struggled in his first two years at Virginia Tech, however. Over those two years, he has a 6.08 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, 8.2 K/9, and 1.9 K/BB in 120 innings. In his first taste of a wood bat college summer league last summer, he showed some of his hidden potential, with a 3.69 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 8.4 K/9, 2.7 K/BB. If he can get his command tightened up, he could shoot up draft boards next year. He's doing a good job at that in the Cape so far, wihc a 2.65 ERA, 79 ERA-. 11.1 K/9, and 10.5 K/BB (!). He's got a nice fastball and breaking ball from the left hand side, but an old-school rock-back delivery that can get a bit herky-jerky - contributing to the control issues, and would likely push him into the bullpen in pro ball. Lefties are always in high demand, and he should be a top ten round guy next year.

With that out of the way, here are your Cape Cod pitching leaders (thanks to Cape Cod League data provided by pointstreak.com):
