Top Prospects in the Arizona Rookie League in 2016

New, 5 comments

The Arizona Rookie League will be graced with some top prospects, draft picks, and IFA's. The trick is catching them before they are gone!

In the past, the Arizona Rookie League served as a place for "minor league rookies." to cut their teeth. Currently, the AZL still serves as a central command station for players selected in the first year player draft. Fifteen major league teams have a development facility in the Phoenix area and 14 of those teams participate in the Arizona League. Draftees from high school will spend a good chuck of their first year in Arizona, while college draftees and International Free Agent signings may only stay a week or even a single game.  The facilities in the AZL can range from being as nice as a AAA facility to worse than your local park. All of the facilities host Spring Training games during February and March, as well as hosting Arizona Fall League Games in October and November.

The AZL is a non-revenue generating league, which means no tickets, no concessions, and no souvenirs. All foul balls must be returned to the team and every night, an inactive player will be assigned the job of "ball-fetcher."  Many of the games are played on practice fields at 7PM local time, and the game time temperature is often in the 105-115 degree range.  A few games per year are held inside the Spring Training Stadiums but, because of the cost to the team it is done rarely. Most games are played on practice fields that usually sit in the shadow of the Stadium or in some case may be down the road a few blocks.

Below is a list of the AZL Teams listed by Team Name and some of the interesting players or prospects. Over the course of the season I will try to to do individual articles on many of the players listed.  There are a number of top prospects as rated by mlbpipeline.com that will begin their year in the AZL. Some of the top prospects include (CLE) Brady Aiken, (CWS) Amado Nunez, (TEX) Leody Taveras, (LAD) Yadier Alvarez, (SEA) Jio Orozco, (LAD) Walker Buehler, and (KC) Seuly Matais.
