Arizona Fall League: Wednesday notes

New, 1 comment

Today's tidbits from the 2016 Arizona Fall League.

****Boston Red Sox infield prospect Yoan Moncada is currently sidelined with a jammed thumb but is expected to return to action by the end of this week. He was playing pretty well before he got hurt, hitting .294/.370/.458 albeit with 10 strikeouts in 24 at-bats.

***Another American League Eastern Division third base prospect worthy of notice is Miguel Andujar of the New York Yankees, hitting .346/.419/.423 in eight games for the Scottsdale Scorpions. Andujar hit .273/.332/.410 in 512 at-bats combined between High-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton. He has been on the prospect radar for several years but is still just 21 years old. Originally signed for $750,000 back in 2011 out of the Dominican Republic, Andujar has above-average raw power but has yet to consistently tap it. He also has an outstanding throwing arm but is still working on the other aspects of defense.

***Houston Astros pitching prospect Francis Martes went four innings for the Glendale Desert Dogs, giving up five hits and three runs, walking three but also striking out three. Martes is probably Houston's best overall prospect at the moment, having posted a 3.30 ERA and a 131/47 K/BB in 125 innings in Double-A on the strength of his fastball in the upper 90s and an improving curve. His control has been wobbly so far this fall. I would expect him to open 2017 in Triple-A.
