Let's talk about Neftali Feliz.
A few years ago Feliz was one of the top pitching prospects in baseball. His big league career got off to a good start with 72 saves for the Texas Rangers combined between 2010 and 2011. In 2012 the Rangers moved him to the starting rotation. He was a starting pitcher for most of his minor league career so the change in role wasn't completely out of the blue, but as you know he shortly after hurt his arm and required Tommy John surgery,
He returned to action in 2014 and held his own (13 saves, 1.99 ERA in 32 innings) but he's been less effective in 2015 and couldn't hold the closer job. He was recently designated for assignment, refused to accept an outright minor league slot and signed with the Detroit Tigers as a free agent.
I think Feliz is a fascinating case so let's share some ideas. Points for discussion:
***Did the Rangers give up on Feliz too quickly?
***If so, why? If not, why not?
***Will he regain a closer job eventually, with the Tigers or elsewhere?
