Happy Kris Bryant Day everyone. As you most likely know by now, the Chicago Cubs have promoted third baseman Kris Bryant to the major league roster and he will start this afternoon's game. Through seven games with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, Bryant hit .321/.387/.679 with three homers, a double, 10 RBI, two walks and nine strikeouts in 28 at-bats.

I doubt the Iowa Cubs are too happy about that: tonight is Opening Night in Des Moines, the I-Cubs having begun the season with a week of road games. Having Bryant in Principal Park (it will always be Sec Taylor Stadium in my heart) for a few games would have been nice for the Cubs top affiliate (and a lot more convenient for me!) but the needs of the major league team are paramount, of course.

It isn't like Bryant has anything to prove down there. With Mike Olt out with an injury, now is the time for Bryant. Enormous power is obviously Bryant's best asset but while there will be some swing-and-miss in his game, his pure hitting skills (and his defense) should not be under-estimated.

Bryant is just a heck-of-a-lotta fun to watch. And he's hitting cleanup in his first major league game. Today is a good day for baseball fans.
