The Minor League Ball Gameday is back again folks. As John said in yesterday's edition, these will get more and more detailed as we get further into Spring Training, and will ramp up to game speed come Opening Day. Like always though, this is THE place to discuss and share all news, musings, stats and injury reports on the interwebs.
Daily Discussion points -
*** Hector Olivera is getting closer and closer to signing with an MLB team now that he is officially a free agent. Early rumors from Tuesday suggested Atlanta was the favorite to sign him, but by the end of the day the Padres (go figure) held that title. Where do you think he will end up? San Diego is considering going up to $50 Million to get his name on the dotted line. What say you?
*** Pirates pitching prospect Brandon Cumpton succumbed to season ending Tommy John surgery to repair the UCL in his right elbow. Cumpton was not expected to make a huge impact with the Bucs this year, but was nice AAA depth. With him sidelined for the year, who do you see as the next guy in line should an MLB starter go down with injury?
*** Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reported that the New York Yankees inquired about outfielder Jason Heyward before he was dealt to the Cardinals. There was no word on if any offers were exchanged, or either side's level of interest, especially when they asked about defensive wunderkind Andrelton Simmons as well. If New York only asked about Heyward, what package do you think the Yankees could have put together to top their return of right handed pitchers Shelby Miller and Tyrell Jenkins?
*** Lastly, former top prospect Michael Taylor (not the Nationals outfielder) retired from the game at the age of 29. The 6'5, 255 pound right hander was originally drafted in the 5th round of the 2007 draft by the Phillies out of Stanford University. He totaled 114 career MLB plate appearances split over four years with a composite .167/.254/.216 line. After an enormous 2009 campaign where he hit .320/.395/.549 between AA Reading and AAA Lehigh Valley as a 23 year old, he was ranked as one of the top 30 prospects in the game by both Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus, and John had him as the 12th best hitting prospect.
