The Washington Nationals hired Dusty Baker as their manager yesterday. We have been discussing issues like memes and filters here recently and the Baker news gives us another angle to examine that topic.
Poking around the internet, the general consensus seems to be that this is a bad decision by the Nationals; I'm talking the reaction of commentariat on message boards and Twitter, not necessarily the reaction of the professional punditocracy. Most sabermetrically-inclined people are taking a negative view of Baker coming on board.
Are they right to do so, or is there some groupthink going on here about Dusty?
Personally I'm very familiar with Baker's record and reputation (for good and ill) when he was managing the Giants and Cubs, but that was a long time ago. People can grow and change over time. I know a lot less about how things worked out with the Cincinnati Reds, having been almost entirely focused on minor league prospects to the exclusion of major league news during that period. So tell me, Reds fans and anyone else who is familiar with Baker, what went on in Cincinnati?
Is hiring Baker a bad move or a good move by Washington? And WHY?
Try to be as objective and specific as possible.
