Minor League Ball AFL Gameday

Game Recaps from Thursday, November 6th

Peoria 5 - Scottsdale 3

Peoria took a one run lead early and held on to a 5-3 win over Scottsdale despite giving away five free passes and making a pair of errors. DH Francisco Lindor (PEJ) led the offensive charge along with 2B Jacob Wilson (PEJ). Lindor went 2-4 with a double and single, scoring both times while driving in one as Wilson reached three times on two walks and a double, crossing the dish twice. C Tony Wolters (PEJ) drove in two and walked once, and RF Kes Carter (PEJ) tripled with his only hit. C Elias Diaz (SCO) tripled home a pair in a losing effort for the Scorpions and 1B Josh Bell (SCO) reached twice with single and walk, scoring once and picking up his second stolen base with a strike out as well. DH Tyler Austin (SCO) and SS Kelby Tomlinson (SCO) also walked and singled with a run scored.

RHP Jaime Schultz (PEJ) was effectively wild, walking four with just one hit allowed while allowing one unearned run in 4.2 innings. He earned the win striking out five and made another throwing error on a pickoff, his fourth of the AFL. RHP Tyler Glasnow (SCO) was the hard luck loser, surrendering two runs on three hits and a walk in four frames while striking out three. RHP Sam Tuivailala (PEJ) continued to put up zeroes, walking one in a scoreless 9th innings for his fourth save, striking out one.

Surprise 6 - Glendale 3

Surprise was led to victory from a surprise source, the youngest player to ever play in the AFL. SS Michael De Leon (SUR) plated four runs as the Saguaros came back to beat Glendale 6-3. He also singled, doubled, struck out and hit a sac fly. DH Kyle Waldrop (SUR) launched a two-run homer late to extend the lead to three with Waldrop also walking and scoring twice while C John Hicks (SUR) reached base every time up with two walks and two singles, scoring once. RF Hunter Renfroe (SUR) added his seventh double and scored, also striking out once while 2B Sean Coyle (SUR) singled and scored with a stolen base and strike out mixed in. CF Mallex Smith (SUR) kicked in a pair of singles and scored once. For the Desert Dogs, LF Garabez Rosa (GDD) hit a solo shot, DH Corey Seager (GDD) added yet another double to his collection, and 2B Hector Gomez (GDD) went 2-3 with an RBI from a sac fly and a strike out. CF Tyrone Taylor (GDD) also singled twice and drove in one while 1B Nick Basto (GDD) reached base twice with a walk and a single, scoring once.

RHP Francellis Montas (GDD) outpitched his counter part allowing a pair of runs in 4.2 innings, working around five hits and three walks with a wild pitch and five punch outs. RHP Keith Couch (SUR) surrendered three runs on four hits and a hit batter, striking out three. Couch also gave up the bomb to Rosa and uncorked a wild pitch. RHP Burch Smith (SUR) earned the win with a pair of scoreless innings of relief, allowing a hit and a walk without striking out anyone to move his record to 3-0. RHP Matt Anderson (SUR) worked the save with two more frames without a run crossing the plate, striking out two with two hits and no walks allowed. RHP Joe Mantiply (GDD) took the loss after blowing the save with two runs scoring on three hits in one inning.

Mesa 4 - Salt River 2 (10 innings)

It took one extra inning to decide the victor with SS Daniel Robertson (MSS) driving in the go-ahead run with a sac fly in the 10th, giving Mesa a one-run lead before they added an insurance run later in the inning. 3B Kaleb Cowart (MSS) registered the only multi-hit game, singling twice while scoring once. 3B Brandon Drury (SRR) provided half the runs for the Rafters, hitting a solo shot in the 1st while also singling and striking out twice. CF Evan Marzilli (SRR) pitched in a pair of singles and a walk to the cause, also stealing his sixth base and scoring once. 1B Cal Towey (MSS) went 1-5 on the day, singling and scoring with his third stolen base, a fielding error, and two strike outs. The bottom of the order also produced with the last three batters all reaching base twice. RF Jacob Hannemann (MSS) singled and walked, C Spencer Kieboom (MSS) singled, walked, and drove in one, and LF Boog Powell (MSS) did everthing Kieboom did with a strike out on top. LF Eddie Rosario (SRR) drove in the other run with a sac fly and he also tripled and struck out.

On the mound, RHP Mark Appel (SRR) was dominant again through five innings, allowing just one hit and no runs while hitting two batters and striking out four with no walks. He also balked but didn't factor in the decision despite the strong start. His opposition, LHP Sean Nolin (MSS) handled four innings of work with one run scoring on a solo homer, also allowing two more hits and a walk with three strike outs. RHP Arik Sikula (MSS) walked away with the win after contributing two scoreless frames, striking out three with a hit and a walk allowed. RHP Enrique Burgos (SRR) blew the save and took the loss with three runs (two earned) scoring in his two innings of relief, surrendering five hits with just one strike out.
