Minor League Ball AFL Gameday

Game Recaps from Tuesday, November 11th

Glendale 8 - Scottsdale 4

It was the Darnell Sweeney show in Scottsdale as the Glendale second baseman lit up the scoreboard with five RBI in their 8-4 win. Sweeney hit a two-run homer, doubled, and singled while scoring one run. CF Tyrone Taylor (GDD) did his part as well, racking up four singles with a run scored and was caught stealing. CF Roman Quinn (SCO) showed some pop by launching a solo shot with an RBI single earlier in the game as well. 1B Nick Basto (GDD) and C Kevan Smith (GDD) each doubled with Basto scoring twice and driving one in while Smith also walked and scored once. 3B Jason Esposito (GDD) plated two with a pair of singles and a run scored, also committing his fifth error on a wild throw. SS Tim Anderson (GDD) kicked in a double as well. DH Josh Bell (SCO) doubled home a run and singled, striking out once and also getting caught stealing. LF Brandon Nimmo (SCO) added a single and a walk, scoring once with a strike out and an outfield assist.

RHP Matt Magill (GDD) was solid through four frames, allowing a run on three hits with a pair of wild pitches, no walks and four strike outs for his second win. RHP Rob Whalen (SCO) was blasted for five runs in 2.2 innings of work. He allowed seven hits and a walk without striking anyone out.

Salt River 4 - Peoria 4 (11 innings)

A four hit game and dominant start were wasted by the Javelinas as they went two extra innings without determining a winner in their 4-4 tie against the Rafters as they battle for a spot in the Championship Game. DH Raul Mondesi (PEJ) went 4-5 with three singles and a double, also stealing his fifth base but was stranded every time out. SS Justin Bohn (SRR) blasted a two-run homer in the 7th inning rally where the Rafters scored all their runs. CF Bubba Starling (PEJ) brought home two with a double and a single, scoring once and striking out twice. RF Max Kepler (SRR) doubled, singled, drove in one and scored once while LF Joe Sclafani (SRR) also doubled and singled, striking out once and gunning a runner down as second base. 2B Daniel Castro (PEJ) doubled and scored with a strike out and double play partner SS Francisco Lindor (PEJ) singled, struck out and drove in one with a sacrifice fly.

RHP Dylan Baker (PEJ) was masterful through five scoreless innings, allowing a single hit with two walks and six strike outs. LHP Sam Selman (PEJ) blew the save though with one run allowed in 1.1 innings with two strike outs and two hits, including the homer to Bohn. LHP Taylor Rogers (SRR) threw two scoreless frames in his start, surrendering one hit and no walks with a punch out. LHP Mitch Lambson (SRR) struck out three in 2.1 innings of perfect relief, and RHP Jake Reed (SRR) blew the save for the Rafters by allowing a run on two hits and a walk in one inning.

Surprise 5 - Mesa 1

The Saguaros didn't make their move until they hit the Solar Sox bullpen where they tallied four runs in the last three innings, leading to their 5-1 win over Mesa. 2B Sean Coyle (SUR) powered the offense out of the #9 spot in the lineup, hitting a two-run homer, doubling, and scoring three runs with two RBI. 1B Patrick Kivlehan (SUR) racked up three hits with a double and two singles, scoring once with a strike out. CF Mallex Smith (SUR) singled twice with an RBI, outfield assist, and he also was picked off first and laid down a sac bunt. RF Hunter Renfroe (SUR), LF Nick Williams (SUR), and C Pat Cantwell (SUR) all doubled and struck out once with Williams also singling and Cantwell also scoring once. 1B Dan Vogelbach (MSS) and CF Chad Hinshaw (MSS) singled twice, and C Pedro Severino (MSS) also doubled. DH Cal Towey (MSS) drove in the only run while LF Jon Berti (MSS) scored the only run after reaching on a walk.

LHP Felipe Rivero (MSS) turned in his second straight solid start, allowing an unearned run on six hits in five innings with a walk and three strike outs, also picking a runner off at first. RHP Sam Wolff (SUR) tossed three scoreless for the Saguaros, giving up just two hits while not striking out anyone and not issuing any free passes. Neither pitcher factored in the decision as RHP Roberto Osuna (MSS) took the loss by surrendering three runs in as many innnings, striking out five without walking anyone and allowing five hits including the bomb to Coyle, also uncorking a wild pitch. RHP Madison Younginer (SUR) got the win despite getting a blown save, allowing a run in an inning of work on a hit and a walk.
