Mesa 5 - Glendale 2
LF Dwight Smith Jr (MSS) picked up three base hits and a walk, stealing his third base and making error while leading Mesa to a 5-2 win over the Desert Dogs. 1B Dan Vogelbach (MSS) walked an amazing four times while RF Bijan Rademacher (MSS) had the only extra base hit with a double and two runs scored. C Pedro Severino (MSS) drove in two with a single and a walk, striking out once. SS Eric Stamets (MSS) and 2B Danny Lockhart (MSS) each singled twice with Stamets scoring once and Lockhart driving in one in his AFL debut. DH Tim Anderson (GDD) hit a solo shot for Glendale and struck out, and CF Tyrone Taylor (GDD) doubled and scored a run. 3B Jason Esposito (GDD) drove in the only other run with a pair of singles.
Starting pitcher LHP Sean Nolin (MSS) was masterful through five innings, surrendering just two hits and a walk while striking out one for his second win. RHP Matt Magill (GDD) threw four scoreless while working around four walks and a hit with two strike outs. Magill did not factor in the decision as RHP Zac Reininger (GDD) gave up a run on three hits in his one inning of work while also striking out one.
Salt River 8 - Scottsdale 6
SS Justin Bohn (SRR) was a presence as the bottom of the Rafters order, hitting four singles and driving in one with a run scored and a throwing error. RF Andrew Aplin (SRR) reached four times with a pair of walks and two singles, scoring twice and he was also caught stealing. 2B Austin Nola (SRR) doubled and singled, plating two and making a fielding error while CF Evan Marzilli (SRR) also drove in two with a pair of singles, a run scored, and two strike outs. LF Eddie Rosario (SRR) stole his 10th base with a double and a single, striking out once. DH Trevor Story (SRR) and 3B Taylor Featherston (SRR) both swiped a base as well, each reaching on a single with Story driving in one and Featherston scoring once. C Chris O'Dowd (SRR) pitched in a double and worked a walk, driving in two with a run scored. CF Roman Quinn (SCO) stole his 13th base once reaching on a single and a walk, scoring both times on. DH Dante Bichette Jr (SCO) drove in three with a single and sac fly, and 1B Greg Bird (SCO) plated a pair with a single and a walk. 2B Kelby Tomlinson (SCO) tripled and scored, and SS Matt Reynolds (SCO) stole a base with two singles and a strike out.
RHP Mark Appel (SRR) took the ball for the Rafters, throwing four frames while allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits and three walks with two punch outs. RHP Jason Adam (SRR) got the win after working around a walk, a hit batter, and a hit in one inning of relief work without striking out anyone. RHP Ken Roberts (SRR) earned the save with one walk allowed in the 9th inning. Scottsdale starter LHP Joely Rodriguez (SCO) only lasted 1.2 innings, allowing three unearned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out two. RHP Clayton Blackburn (SCO) took the loss with two runs scoring on his watch, surrendering four hits in three innings with one strike out.
Peoria 8 - Surprise 3
3B Breyvic Valera (PEJ) led the charge for Peoria by reaching base four times as the Javelinas jumped to an early lead and took down Surprise by the score of 8-3. Valera doubled, walked, and singled twice with two RBI and two runs scored, striking out once and getting caught stealing. C Cody Stanley (PEJ) roped a pair of doubles as he drove in two, worked a walk and scored once. SS Raul Mondesi (PEJ) doubled, singled, and scored a run with his third error, and 2B Tony Wolters (PEJ) also singled, doubled and scored a run. 1B Jacob Wilson (PEJ) singled twice and drove in one, and RF Edward Salcedo (PEJ) was 1-4 with a walk, RBI and a run scored, striking out once as well. CF Nick Williams (SUR) blasted a solo bomb and struck out twice. DH Juan Perez (SUR) doubled and drove in one with two strike outs, and RF Kyle Waldrop (SUR) doubled and struck out once. 2B Sean Coyle (SUR) stole his fourth bag and scored after reaching on a walk, getting hit by a pitch, and he also made a throwing error.
Peoria starter RHP Jaime Schultz (PEJ) was pretty stout in five frames with seven punch outs, allowing a run on three hits and two walks, allowing Nick Williams' solo shot for his first win of the AFL. His opposition, RHP Keith Couch (SUR), gave up four runs in as many innings, surrendering seven hits and two walks, striking out two, hitting a batter and uncorking a wild pitch while also getting tagged with the loss.
Surprise Stadium, home of the Surprise Saguaros and the home field for the Peoria Javelinas this year, has pitchf/x installed so we can see velocity readings for each pitcher.
