Game Recaps from Saturday, October 18
Peoria 4 - Scottsdale 3 (11 innings)
It took two extra frames to figure it out, but back-to-back doubles by DH Edward Salcedo (PEJ) and RF Jordan Smith (PEJ) in the bottom half of the 11th inning put the Javelinas over the top 4-3. LF Kes Carter (PEJ) tied it up in the 9th with a solo blast down the right field line, part of a 2-4 game where he also doubled and scored twice, and drove in two with two strike outs. Three other Javelinas doubled for their only hit with 3B Jacob Wilson (PEJ) also walking and striking out twice, DH Edward Salcedo (PEJ) scored once, and RF Jordan Smith (PEJ) also drove in one, scored once, and struck out once as well. 2B Daniel Castro (PEJ) stole his first bag of the Fall after going 2-4 with two singles. DH Aaron Judge (SCO) and 1B Josh Bell (SCO) each doubled while Judge also drove in one, walked, and struck out twice as Bell also came around to score and made a fielding error, his third. 3B Dante Bichette Jr (SCO) stole his first base after singling twice with a walk, RBI, and two strike outs. SS Kelby Tomlinson (SCO) also stole a bag, his fourth of the Fall.
RHP Kyle Zimmer (PEJ) couldn't get loose and was pulled after an inning where he walked and struck out one. Scottsdale sent RHP Tyler Glasnow (SCO) to the hill and he responded with three scoreless innings with four hits, a walk, and three punch outs. Neither pitcher was a part of the decision with RHP Ryne Harper (PEJ) getting the win and RHP Colton Murray (SCO) taking the loss. Harper tossed a perfect 11th inning needing only seven pitches and Murray registered only one out before surrendering Smith's walk-off double.
Mesa 8 - Salt River 4
After four innings the Solar Sox held a commanding 8-3 lead and allowed just one more run for an 8-4 victory over the Rafters. Mesa took advantage of four defensive miscues by Salt River and also stole five bases as a team. SS Eric Stamets (MSS) went 2-4 with a triple, single, RBI and a stolen base while 2B Tony Renda (MSS) also tripled, walked, and drove in two. RF Bijan Rademacher (MSS) singled twice, scored once and plated one with a stolen base of home, and LF Dwight Smith Jr (MSS) reached base twice with a walk and a single, stole two bases, and struck out once. C Chris O'Dowd (SRR) hit the only homer in the game, a solo shot in the 7th while also singling once and striking out two tims. 3B Kaleb Cowart (MSS) also stole a base and C Pedro Severino (MSS) had some problems behind the plate, allowing two passed balls. 1B Peter O'Brien (SRR), 3B Joe Sclafani (SRR) and SS Trevor Story (SRR) all doubled, walked, and scored for the Rafters with O'Brien and Story driving in one and both making an error. Sclafani stole his first base, the only act of thievery in the game for Salt River.
RHP Archie Bradley (SRR) ran into some issues, taking the loss by allowing seven runs (four earned) in just two innings of work, walking four and allowing three hits with two strike outs. LHP Felipe River (MSS) started for Mesa and earned the win with 2.2 innings of work, allowing two runs on three hits, three walks, and a hit batter, striking out two.
Glendale 9 - Surprise 4
A steady offensive attack and some defensive problems by the Saguaros powered Glendale to a 9-4 win. RF Steven Moya (GDD) launched a solo homer to left, scored three times, and also singled while LF Scott Schebler went 3-3 with a double, two RBI, he scored twice and hit a sac fly. 2B Garabez Rosa (GDD) also doubled for the Desert Dogs, driving in two and working a walk, also scoring once. 1B Nick Basto (GDD) reached base three times with a pair of walks and was hit by a pitch with a strike out. LF Jesse Winker (SUR) did his part going 3-4 with a walk, scoring once, and driving in one. 3B DJ Peterson (SUR) doubled and walked, driving in two with a run scored and a pair of errors at the hot corner. 1B Patrick Kivlehan (SUR) also doubled and walked, scoring twice with an RBI and two punch outs. 2B Sean Coyle (SUR) stole his second base of the AFL, and SS Deven Marrero (SUR) booted a ground ball and went 1-4 at the dish.
RHP Zach Davies (GDD) was a dominant force on the mound, striking out seven in just four innings, working around a pair of walks and two hits for the win. RHP Stephen Landazuri (SUR) didn't fare nearly as well, allowing three runs in three innings with five hits and walk allowed, striking out one and allowing a homer to Moya. He also made a throwing error and his record fell to 1-3 for the Fall. RHP Josh McElwee (SUR), RHP Ben Klimesh (SUR), and LHP Joe Mantiply (GDD) all had scoreless innings of relief.
Surprise Stadium, home of the Surprise Saguaros and the home field for the Peoria Javelinas this year, has pitchf/x installed so we can see velocity readings for each pitcher.
