Welcome back to the AFL Gameday folks. Apologies for the late publish, I've been a bit under the weather (no ebola, no worries) but did somehow end up sleeping 14 hours yesterday. I feel much better today, but today's a bit of a 'Diet Gameday' and we'll be back to normal tomorrow.

Check out all the stats from yesterday's action in the link below along with the Game Recaps, Probable Starters, and Standings further down.

Game Recaps from Tuesday, October 14th

Scottsdale 10 - Mesa 7

The Scorpions jumped to a commanding nine run lead through just four innings and would hold off a late Solar Sox rally to take home the win. RF Daniel Carbonell (SCO) launched a three-run homer in the 3rd inning off LHP Gerardo Concepcion (MSS), the Scorpions only long ball and Mesa sent two out via 1B Matt Olson (MSS) and LF Boog Powell (MSS). Four Scottsdale players had multi-hit games while DH Josh Bell (SCO) and 2B LJ Mazzilli (SCO) doubled and drove in one. C Sean Ochinko (MSS) was the only Solar Sox to double, and RF Cal Towey (MSS) stole a bag.

LHP Joely Rodriguez (SCO) tossed three scoreless to start, earning the win while allowing a hit and a walk with three punch outs and a wild pitch. RHP Nefi Ogando (SCO) saved it by squashing a rally with two quick outs in the 9th. LHP Sean Nolin (MSS) took the loss after surrendering four runs in 1.1 innings by giving up two walks and four hits. Despite getting knocked around, every out recorded was a strike out.

Glendale 9 - Peoria 0

The Glendale Desert Dogs had a comfortable three run lead heading into the 7th inning before exploding for six more runs while holding the Peoria offense hostage for a 9-0 victory. The Glendale staff only surrendered three walks and three hits the entire game, led by starter RHP Matt Magill (GDD) who took care of three innings with no hits, two walks and three strike outs, also earning the win. RHP Jaime Schultz (PEJ) wasn't nearly as effective, allowing three runs in his 3.2 frames. Schultz gave up three hits and walked two while also striking out six and hitting a batter. RHP Miguel Almonte (PEJ) was a bright spot going 2.1 scoreless innings with just one hit allowed and four punch outs.

SS Tim Anderson (GDD) and C Kevan Smith (GDD) picked up three hits a piece, accounting for half the base knocks in the game for the Desert Dogs. Smith singled three times while Anderson doubled, singled and scored twice, stole a base, was picked off and struck out. RF Steven Moya (GDD) was also a big part of the win, driving in four runs while tripling and hitting a single, also scoring once. DH Corey Seager (GDD) and 1B Nick Ramirez (GDD) also doubled, drove in one and came around to score with Seager also working a walk. The Javelinas did not register an extra base hit but LF Jordan Smith (PEJ) singled twice and CF Kes Carter (PEJ) walked two times.

Salt River 1 - Surprise 0

Another surprise pitching duel, this time in Surprise. The Rafters scratched together one run in the 8th inning on a triple to left from CF Andrew Aplin (SRR) which drove in Taylor Featherston (SRR) who pinch ran for C Tyler Heineman (SRR) after he singled. Aplin also singled earlier in the game while Heineman and 3B Rio Ruiz (SRR) notched a pair of singles a piece with Ruiz also working a walk. The Saguaros only managed seven base runners on three walks and four hits with none going for extra bases. SS Deven Marrero (SUR) did reach base twice though.

Pitching was the real story here though with a scoreless five inning start from RHP Keith Couch (SUR) where he allowed five hits and no walks, striking out two. RHP Mark Appel (SRR) didn't last as long, only throwing four innings, but was much more impressive by striking out six. Appel gave up a hit and two walks and did not factor in the decision, like Couch. RHP Stephen Landazuri (SUR) was tagged with the loss after allowing the clutch RBI triple by Aplin, one of two hits he allowed with a strike out as well. RHP Reid Redman (SRR) walked out of there with the win by tossing two scoreless relief innings, allowing a single hit and striking out two with no free passes.
