Good afternoon prospect watchers. I hope your weekend is going well. I am camping at Clinton Lake State Park this weekend and am not completely operational, but here is a thread to keep you busy. I will be back to a normal schedule on Monday.
***On Monday, we will look at second base prospect Devon Travis of the Detroit Tigers and rookie southpaw reliever Kevin Siegrist of the St. Louis Cardinals. Other upcoming topics include Jimmy Nelson of the Milwaukee Brewers, David Holmberg of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Onelki Garcia of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Tommy Medica of the San Diego Padres, Christian Colon of the Kansas City Royals, and Jose Ramirez of the Cleveland Indians.
***Yesterday's Minor League Ball Gameday thread.
***Los Angeles Angels prospect C.J. Cron was the big hero for the Arkansas Travelers in the Texas League championship yesterday, knocking an opposite-field home run against San Antonio starter Donn Roach in a 4-1 win. Cron hit .274/.319/.428 with 36 doubles and 14 homers during the regular season, good for a 112 wRC+, which isn't bad but is not the sort of dominant power performance you want to see from a minor league first baseman. He should move up to Triple-A next year and it will be interesting to see how his aggressive hitting style works in the Pacific Coast League.
***Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Andrew Chafin threw a complete game shutout in the Southern League playoffs yesterday, leading Mobile to a 6-0 victory over Birmingham. Between Mobile and High-A Visalia, Chafin went 13-8 this year with a 3.20 ERA and a 119/55 K/BB in 157 innings. I wish his strikeout rate were higher, but the good news is that he's finishing the season in strong shape and has proven he can eat innings despite Tommy John surgery three years ago.
***Another Tommy John survivor, Mets prospect Steven Matz, was the victor in yesterday's Savannah Sand Gnats South Atlantic League championship win over Hagerstown. I'm hearing increasingly good things about him.
***Today's schedule of minor league post-season games.
