Minor League Ball Gameday, November 6th

Good afternoon everyone. Pitching was on display yesterday as two games featured shut out performances from their staffs. The MLB is testing expanded replay for the next four nights with a game being broadcast on MLB Network each night. Now on to the deets.

Surprise 4 - Glendale 2

The Surprise bullpen threw 5.1 innings of two hit baseball to give their offense time to score and take home their league leading 15th win. The offensive stars of the game were Jason Rogers and Travis Shaw. Shaw went 2-3 with a homer, walk, two runs scored, an RBI and a strike out. Rogers knocked three hits including a double with a strike out and an RBI. Third baseman Ryan Rua also went yard, hitting a solo shot with a walk and strike out as well in four plate appearances. Catcher Adam Weisenberg and center fielder Tyler Naquin both had two hits, with Weisenberg striking out once. Joe Wendle was 1-5 with a double, strike out and was picked off at first. After a rough start from Will Lamb where he allowed two runs on six hits and a walk with two punch outs and a homer in 3.2 innings. From then on it was lights out. Shawn Armstrong went 1.1 perfect innings with a strike out. Tyler Sturdevant gave up the only two hits from the pen, striking out one in a shut out inning. Tim Berry, Keith Couch, and Keone Kela finished it off with hitless innings each. Couch walked two and struck out one and Kela got the save walking one with two punch outs.

Stephen McCray took the bump for Glendale and gave up an almost identical line to Will Lamb but with one more walk and one less out recorded. Trevor May came in after and gave up an unearned run on one hit with three strike outs in 1.2 innings and somehow getting stuck with the loss. Chad Rogers covered two innings of relief allowing four hits, a home run, picked a guy off and struck one out. Drew Hayes struck out one in his inning of work. Left fielder  Brent Keys showed off his muscle in the second at bat of the game sending one out of the park. He also walked, stole a base, and scored both Glendale runs. Colin Moran and Byron Buxton each had a hit in five at bats with Buxton striking out once and Moran going down twice with his second error as well. Center fielder Yorman Rodriguez added two hits and a walk with an RBI in four trips and catcher Tucker Barnhart went 1-4 with with a passed ball.

Scottsdale 4 - Peoria 0

Scottsdale only allowed four hits all game while striking out 10 Javelinas in the win. It started with Hansel Robles going three innings with two hits and a walk allowed with four strike outs. Cody Satterwhite, Jeurys Familia, and Juan Jaime threw hitless innings a piece with former two striking out one and Jaime setting down two on strikes. Fred Lewis and James Pazos allowed a hit a piece in their innings with Pazos also walking one. Derek Law took care of the 9th striking out two. Their offense worked eight walks and had four hits. Mason Williams was 1-3 with a walk and an RBI. Right fielder Cory Vaughn went 1-2 with a pair of walks, a run scored and a stolen base. Left fielder Jarrett Parker was 1-3 with a walk, a run scored, stolen base and a strike out.

Catcher Austin Hedges did all he could to keep Peoria in it but it wasn't enough. He was 2-4 with a double and two strike outs, accounting for half of the team's hits. Right fielder Cameron Perkins knocked a double as well, going 1-3 with a strike out as well. Cory Spangenberg got the only other hit. Nolan Fontana was able to coax a pair of walks with a strike out in his four plate appearances. On the hill Johnny Barbato gave them one of the better starts of the day, only allowing a hit and a walk with a strike out in three innings. Noel Arguelles followed and walked over half the line up only getting two outs. He allowed five walks and four runs, all earned. Ken Giles followed with 1.1 innings allowing a hit and walk with three punch outs. Malcom Culver worked a scoreless inning with a strike out. Austin Wright worked around a pair of hits, throwing 0.2 inning with a strike out and Keyvius Sampson was brought in to finish it off with 1.1 hitless innings with a walk and strike out.

Salt River 8 - Mesa 0

The night cap was broadcast on MLB Network and will go down as the first professional baseball game to be played with instant replay. There were four "challenges", all where the call on the field was upheld. The process was much quicker than the current format, usually taking less than a minute or two to get the call. Salt River took advantage of some incredibly sloppy defense on Mesa's part and their pitching just dominated the game. Sam Gaviglio was nearly unhittable in five innings, only allowing two hits and a walk with two strike outs for the win. Henry Garcia and Tyler Matzek each struck a batter out and allowed a hit in shut out innings. Anthony Ferrara struck out two in a perfect inning and Matt Stites only needed 10 pitches to set down all three he faced in order. Jacob Wilson was the offensive star, knocking a pair of doubles with two RBI and a run scored. Andy Burns was 2-3 with a walk and was picked off. Right fielder Stephen Piscotty went 2-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a strike out. Tim Wheeler and Dustin Garneau also registered hits with a run scored and punch out with Wheeler also knocking a run in.

Mesa was just off all aspects of their game. Only five batters reached base the entire game, with just four singles. Albert Almora and Tyler Collins were 1-4, and Matt Skole and Adrian Nieto were 1-3. Left fielder Zach Borenstein worked the only walk with a strike out as well. Collins and Borenstein also made throwing errors along with CJ Cron. Both Devon Travis and Dixon Machado made fielding errors. Nieto also picked off a runner at first. Starting pitcher Dallas Beeler got the loss allowing seven unearned runs in 2.2 innings on four hits and two walks with a strike out. Kenny Faulk threw 1.1 innings allowing just a hit with three punch outs and Omar Duran threw an inning with a hit, wild pitch and two strike outs. RJ Alvarez set down the side in order with a strike out and Richie Mirowski handled the last two innings allowing a run on two hits and a walk with a strike out.
