Good afternoon prospect watchers. Here are today's scheduled game matchups and starting pitchers for the Arizona Fall League.

Peoria (Brandon Maurer, Mariners) vs. Salt River (Sam Gaviglio, Cardinals)
Glendale (Andrew Heaney, Marlins) vs. Scottsdale (Hansel Robles, Mets)
Mesa (Dallas Beeler, Cubs) vs. Surprise (Will Lamb, Rangers)


The Mauer/Gaviglio matchup and the Andrew Heaney start should be particularly interesting.

*** The early game between Peoria and Scottsdale went to Peoria in a 6-3 game. CF Delino DeShields was 2/3 with 2 R, a RBI, BB, and SB. SS Nolan Fontana pitched in a 2/3 day with 2 2B, a run scored, RBI, BB and K. 2B Cory Spangenberg scored twice and had a stolen base to go with a pair of singles in three trips to the plate. Starting pitcher Johnny Barbato lost his map to the stike zone. He only recorded two outs (one strikeout) in the 1st before being pulled, and allowed 4 walks, no hits and 1 earned run. Angel Baez came in relief and threw 3 innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk and 5 punch outs with a wild pitch.

*** Scottsdale only managed to scrape across 3 runs against Peoria, led by 2B Tommy La Stella once more. The second baseman was 1/3 with a pair of walks, a double, run scored and pair of RBI with a stolen base. CF Mason Williams chipped in with a 2/4 performance, scoring a run, knocking a double and one strike out. Kyle Crick made the start for the Scorpions and got hit around. In 2 innings he allowed 3 hits, 3 walks and 4 runs (only 3 earned) with 4 K's. Reliever Matt Benedict threw 2.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just 1 hit with a strike out.

*** Mesa continues to roll through the AFL, beating Salt River 8-1. Cubs farmhand Albert Almora has been on fire, adding to his hot start with a 2/5 game with 2 runs scored, a triple and 3 RBI's while playing RF. SS Addison Russell was 1/4 with a walk and stolen base. Max Muncy played at the hot corner last night, making just 1 error while going 2/3 with a walk, run scored and K. LHSP Matt Purke of the Washington organization had a great start, throwing 3 innings, allowing 2 hits, 1 walk, an unearned run and 2 K's. Then the next 5 relievers failed to allow a run to score, led by 2013 draftee Corey Knebel from Detroit who threw a perfect frame with 2 K.

*** Salt River didn't have much going for them, but James Ramsey has carried the team offensively here at the start. He was a perfect 3/3 with a walk, double, and run scored playing CF. Starter Aaron Sanchez lived up to his billing with 3 innings pitched, 1 hit, no runs, 2 walks and a K. LHP Kraig Sitton came on in relief and fired 1.2 innings of clean baseball with 2 strike outs.

*** Glendale put a beating on Surprise, handing them their first loss with a decisive 11-0 victory. LF Brian Cavazos-Galvez had a hell of a day, going 5/5 with a pair of doubles, 2 runs scored and an RBI. RF Yorman Rodriguez sent one out of the yard in a 2/5 day, adding a double with 2 runs scored an RBI and strike out. Speedster 2B Micah Johnson was 2/4 with a triple, 2 runs scored, 3 RBI and a walk. Even light hitting C Tucker Barnhart got in on the action going 2/2 with 2 walks and a run scored. Starter Stephen McCray was wild in his 2.2 innings of work, allowing 4 walks and 2 hits but didn't allow a run with 2 strike outs. Reliever Kevin Vance pitched in 2 innings of scoreless, hitless baseball with a walk and 2 K's.

*** It's hard to find an offensive star in an 11-0 drubbing but 3B Garin Cecchini showed off his discerning eye going 0/1 with 3 walks, a stolen base and an error on defense. Jack-of-all-trades Tony Wolters moved from C to SS yesterday and was 0/3 with a walk, 2 K's and a stolen base. Starter Will Roberts went 3 innings allowing 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and gave up a long ball without striking anyone out.
