*** Mesa destroyed Glendale 13-3, as they sent 2 balls flying over the fences in the 1st courtesy of a lead off shot by CF Albert Almora and a 3-run bomb by 3B Kris Bryant, both of starter RHP Michael Lorenzen. Bryant's replacement in the game, Cubs farmhand 3B Wes Darvill went yard as well in his first trip to the plate off RHP Jarrett Martin. Almora finished the game 4/5 with 2 singles, a double (1) and the HR (1). He scored 3 times and drove in 3 (1,2,3). 2B Devon Travis pitched in a pair of singles, 2 runs scored, a walk and strike out. Bryant added a single, walk and strikeout to go with a fielding error in the field (1). SS Dixon Machado went 2/4 with a run scored, strike out and a fielding error (1). RF Steve Souza was just 1/5 with a strike out but he showed off his wheels with a pair of steals back to back off RHP Jamie Walczak. On the mound, starter LHP Sammy Solis went 3.2 scoreless innings with 3 hits and a walk allowed with 2 strike outs. Relief pitcher RHP Seth Frankoff was the only other pitcher to not allow a run as he went 1.1 perfect innings.
***Glendale 1B Travis "Moose" Mattair got his team on the board in the 6th with a solo shot off LHP Omar Duran and RF Jared Mitchell got one of his own off RHP Ryan Dull in the 8th. Pinch hitter Brandon Jacobs also hit a solo shot in the 9th off RHP Robert Benincasa, but all 3 were in vain. Both Mattair and Mitchell added singles while Mattair also tacked on a walk and strikeout. 2B Eddie Rosario was 1/5 at the dish with a fielding error (1). Both RHP Yimi Garcia and RHP Chad Rogers didn't allow a run with Garcia going 1.2 innings with 1 hit and 1 walk allowed. Rogers put in 2 innings of work with 1 hit allowed, a pair of strikeouts, a wild pitch, and a throwing error (1) on a pickoff.
***In Peoria, Surprise edged out the home squad 9-5 with DH Michael Ohlman blasting one to left and letting the wind turn it from just another homer to an absolute monster shot, with RHP Mike Nesseth the victim. Ohlman finished 2/3 with 2 runs scored, the HR (1), a double (1), RBI (1). 1B Travis Shaw added a 2-run shot later in the 8th innings off RHP Andrew Robinson. Shaw finished 2/4 with a run scored, the HR (1), 3 RBI (1,2,3) and a walk. Other standout performances from the squad came from 2B Mookie Betts who went 3/6 with 3 runs scored, an RBI (1) and pair of stolen bases (2). CF Mitch Haniger put together another strong performance with a 3/5 day with double (2), run scored and 3 RBI's (5,6,7). Ryan Rua saw time at 3B and was 1/4 with an RBI and K. LF Jason Rogers had a 2/5 day with a double (1) and a K. On the mound RHP Noe Ramirez threw a scoreless inning with a hit. RHP Matt West had a perfect inning with 1 K. RHP Ryan Harvey threw a scoreless 8th with a walk and K, and RHP David Goforth closed it out with a perfect inning.
***Peoria didn't have any home runs yesterday but did get a strong performance from their starter, RHP Matt Heidenreich who went 3 hitless and scoreless innings allowing a pair of walks and 2 strikeouts. He was the only pitcher to not allow a run for Peoria. At the plate, RF Jorge Bonifacio led the offense with a 2/4 game with a pair of runs scored and a double (1). CF Delino DeShields was 1/4 with a double (1), RBI, 2 K and was caught stealing. DH Cameron Rupp had a multi-hit day along with Bonifacio, going 2/4 with a run scored and a K. 3B Jonathan Meyer was 1/3 with 2 runs scored, a double (1), RBI, walk and K with a throwing error (1) as well.
***Salt River got the upperhand on Scottsdale 12-2 behind a monster 8th inning where they put the nail in the coffin scoring 6 runs. RF James Ramsey was a big part of that inning, hitting a 3-run HR off RHP John Cornely. He added a single, stole a base (1) , scored twice, walked once and had 2 K's. 3B Andy Burns pitched in with a 3/6 day, hitting 3 singles with 2 runs scored, an RBI, SB and 2 whiffs. CF Kenny Wilson continues to be a force in the lead off spot. He was 2/6 with a run scored, a double (1), 3 RBI's (1,2,3), a walk and 2 K's. Late inning defensive replacement SS Christian Adames made one trip to the plate and hit a double. RHSP Grayson Garvin threw 5 impressive innings, only allowing 1 hit, no runs or walks and 5 strike outs. RHP Anthony Ferrara threw a hitless inning with a walk and 2 strike outs. RHP Dean Kiekhefer threw a scoreless innings as well, allowing a hit and strike out before the brought in RHP Jake Barrett to finish it off. Barrett threw a scoreless 9th inning with a hit and 3 strike outs.
***Scottsdale had a rough night overall. On the bright side, their pitching staff struck out 16 Salt River hitters. The downside includes: 16 hits allowed, 13 walks allowed, 3 wild pitches, 2 errors, 2 passed balls and 12 runs allowed. 3B Peter O'Brien led the way offensively with a 1/4 night, hitting a 2-run HR (1) in the 7th off LHP Andrew Chafin and a K. LF Alex Dickerson was 2/3 with a 2B (1), run scored and a walk. Only 3 pitchers made appearances without giving up a run. RHP Derek Law threw .2 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 K. LHP Fred Lewis threw a full inning with a walk, hit and strike out, and RHP Chasen Bradford got the last out of the game without giving up anything. Starter RHP Aaron Northcraft couldn't get out of the 3rd, throwing 2.1 innings allowing 3 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks and 4 strike outs.
