Minor League Prospect Note: Socrates Brito, OF, Arizona Diamondbacks

Arizona Diamondbacks outfield prospect Socrates Brito went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI last night for the Missoula Osprey in the rookie level Pioneer League. This brings his season line to an overall .307/.348/.422 mark, with 10 doubles, three triples, two homers, 24 RBI, 13 walks, and 55 strikeouts in 192 at-bats. He's also stolen 11 bases in 15 attempts.

Brito is a 6-2, 195 pound left-handed hitter, born September 6th, 1992. Arizona signed him as a free agent from the Dominican Republic in 2010. His background is unusual: he originally signed for $190,000, but the D-backs voided the deal after he failed a PED test, drawing a 50-game suspension. That cost him a bunch of money: Arizona still wanted him, but reduced his bonus to $90,000.

Even without the PEDs, Brito impresses scouts with his raw power, bat speed, and right field throwing arm. Brito is unrefined, his plate discipline needs work, and his performance isn't great by Pioneer League standards, but there's enough talent here that he should be tracked. He also passes the name test: Socrates Brito is a great moniker.
