Minor League Prospect Note: Kevin Gausman, RHP, Baltimore Orioles
Baltimore Orioles first round 2012 draft choice Kevin Gausman made his second start for the short-season Aberdeen Ironbirds in the New York-Penn League yesterday, throwing three shutout innings against Connectcut, allowing one hit and no walks, fanning three.
Our friend Jordan Tuwiner of Orioles-Nation.com was there, and provides a detailed scouting report on Gausman, including pitch counts and locations within the strike zone, plus some video of the prospect in action. Check it out!
According to Jordan, Gausman was throwing 92-95 MPH with action low in the strike zone. He relied mainly on the fastball and changeup, his bread-and-butter pitches in college, but mixed in a couple of sliders which Tuwiner felt were effective. Jordan also made special note of Gausman's dominant persona on the mound.
Basically, the Gausman on the mound for Aberdeen is the same Gausman we saw for Louisiana State this spring: excellent fastball and changeup, shows promise with a breaking ball, and just looks like a guy who knows what he's doing on the mound.
