New York Mets Prospect Matt Harvey Debuts in Majors Tonight
The New York Mets promoted pitching prospect Matt Harvey to the majors a couple of days ago and he'll make his major league debut against the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight.
Harvey went 7-5, 3.68 in 20 starts for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons in the International League this year, with a 112/48 K/BB ratio in 110 innings, allowing 97 hits. Drafted in the first round in 2010 from the University of North Carolina, the 23-year-old right-hander has a classic workhorse build at 6-4, 225 pounds.
His fastball has been clocked as high as 98 MPH and is consistently in the 92-94 range. He also uses a slider and curveball, and has made enough progress with his changeup (previously a weakness) that the Mets are comfortable giving him a shot. At his best, he throws four quality pitches for strikes, although his command can be inconsistent.
Depending on how you rate Zack Wheeler, Harvey is either the Mets best or second-best pitching prospect. I think he can be a number two starter if the command is there. Keys to watch: command of his breaking pitches and usage of the changeup.
