Minnesota Twins Trade Ben Revere to Philadelphia Phillies for Vance Worley and Trevor May
The Minnesota Twins traded outfielder Ben Revere to the Philadelphia Phillies this morning, receiving in return right-handed starter Vance Worley and pitching prospect Trevor May. Here's the scoop on May.
Trevor May, RHP: May was considered Philadephia's top pitching prospect entering 2012. He had an erratic season for Double-A Reading, going 10-13, 4.87 in 28 starts with a 151/78 K/BB ratio in 150 innings, allowing 139 hits. He was more effective in 2011 with a 3.63 ERA and a 208/67 K/BB in 151 innings in High-A. His K/IP ratio was the best of all minor league starting pitchers in '11.
May is an intimidating 6-5, 215 pound right-hander, born September 23, 1989. Drafted in the fourth round in 2008 from high school in Kelso, Washington, May has a 90-95 MPH fastball, a curveball, a slider, and a changeup. All three secondary pitches flash above average, but he has problems with mechanical consistency and overall command. Although his size and velocity would look nice coming out of the bullpen, he's very durable, has a body that absorbs innings, and shows enough with his secondary pitches that scouts want to give him every chance in the rotation. It all comes down to command: if he shows it, he can be a number two or strong number three starter.
I think this is a great deal for the Twins. With outfielder Aaron Hicks and Oswaldo Arcia coming up soon, Revere is surplus to their medium and long-term needs. Worley is a solid starter and May adds another coveted power arm to the farm system.
