Kohl Stewart, P, Tomball, TX
High School Senior
Bats/Throws: Right/Right
HT/WT: 6'3"/195
Birthdate: 10/7/94 Age at Draft: 18.8
Stewart is a great athlete. At 6’3", 195, it isn’t shocking to hear that he is one of the better QB recruits in the nation as well. He has that bulldog swagger on the mound. He has easy arm strength and a simple, repeatable delivery. He is obviously a very good athlete.
His best asset is his arm. He has a fastball that can run up to 97 on occasion and sits more in the 92-94 range. He projects to have an easy plus fastball once he gains command. His breaking ball is a hard bender that is inconsistent at this point but that is very typical of pitchers who excel at multiple sports. Improvement should come quickly if he chooses to play baseball full time. His change was quite good when I saw him. He doesn’t need it against competition he currently faces but it could be a plus pitch as well as it develops consistent.
As a prospect that could be a starting quarterback or a starting pitcher or both for Texas A&M, he will have a difficult choice at draft time. On the diamond, he has the potential to develop into a front of the rotation starter. Stewart possesses amazing athleticism, potential for three plus pitches and the build of an ace. He may have more potential than any other prep pitcher in this class, but there is a large obstacle to cross before he even steps on a pro mound. Much of his future depends on his choice around that silly sport with the weird shaped ellipse. To me it’s obvious but it will likely define his future success on the diamond. His talent will allow him to be a 1st round pick, his other skills will decide whether that occurs or not.
